T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER E. TAFT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Valves for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a valve wherein the gases in the valve chamher are separated from the gases in the cylinder when explosion takes place; one which is nearly frictionless in movement, and one that is simple and economical in construction.
The invention consists of a valve of arcuate plate formation, arranged in a recess in a stationary ported lining, and operatively connected with an oscillating cylindrical inner valve arranged within the lining and imparting its motion to the plate valve, as I will proceed now to explain and finally claim.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a transverse section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 2, showing the valve and valve chamber as applied to two cylinders. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of same, taken on the line 1+1 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a drop-off cam mechanism. Fig. 4 is a transverse section showing a modification of the valve and valve chamber as applied to one cylinder, wherein the ports in the cylindrical inner valve are incased. F ig. 5 is a transverse section of another modification as applied to a single cylinder, in which the inner valve is a plain cylindrical tube with an eccentric bore, and slit lengthwise.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, a is the valve casing; Z) is the oscillating inner valve, of tubular cylindrical form and having the ports 6', b b 0 is a lining stationarily mounted in the casing a, and d cl are the supplementary or outer valves of arcuate plate formation and arranged in outside recesses (Z in the lining, and supported therein by the casing a. The recesses d are of such length as to permit the necessary movements of the valves cl, d, to cover and uncover their complementary ports. The casing a is made with the passage 6 for watercooling it. f, f are ports connecting the valve and the cylinders f f. These ports are controlled by the valves 0?, (Z, and they may be used either as inlet or exhaust ports as desired. The lining a is provided with ports a, n, registering with the ports 7, f, and said lining is also provided with the port 3/ registering with the inlet port 1". By oscillation of the valve 7) its port I) oooperates with either of the ports a, and its ports Z2 b cooperate with the ports y and r. The valves d, (Z are connected with the inner valve 6 by means of pins 7', j, fixed to the inner valve and extending thence through slots Z, Z, in the lining and entering holes 76 in the valves cl, (Z, so that as the inner valve is oscillated or turned the valves (Z, (Z have a corresponding movement. The valve Z) has its bore eccentrically arranged, so that its shell is of unequal thickness, and in the thinner part the valve is provided with a longitudinal slit m, whereby the valve is rendered more or less resilient.
As shown in Fig. 2, there are two outer or supplementary valves (Z, (Z, and one inner valve 6, used in connection with. the inlet 1 and with the exhaust a: of two cylinders, the valvesbeing separated by the partition w. Means for operating the exhaust valve may comprise a flanget provided with lugs e engaging notches in the adjacent end of valve 6; the flange t having a stem 25 which passes through a bore in the partition to and through the inlet valve 6 and through the flange and stem of the connection .9 for operating the inlet valve and supplied with a lever u for its movement by any suitable means.
Any suitable valve-operating gear maybe used to give an oscillating movement to the valves, one such being indicated in Fig. 3, wherein a rotary drop-off cam g cooperates with a roller arm it depending from the valve arm '0. A similar operating means may be applied to the exhaust valve by affixing an arm to the arm u.
The modification shown in Fig. 4 illustrates the invention as applied to a single cylinder. In this construction the ports a" are incased within the cylindrical inner valve, and a single outer valve (Z is used. The ports 2" alternately connect the ports g on opposite sides of the casing with the port 7 in the cycle of movements for the inlet charge and the exhaust. In this case while one port 3 is serving as inlet, the other will serve as exhaust, and one inner and one outer valve may be used for both the inlet and exhaust combined, this being a novelleature of my invention.
In Fig. 5 is shown a modification oi the T head motor type using a single cylinder, in which a single valve Z) and a single outer valve d may be used, the valve chambers being placed on opposite sides of the cylinder, one being used for the exhaust and the other for the inlet charge, andthe inlet and exhaust placed at the ends as shown at m in Fig. 2. In this case the operative means may be such as described with reference to Figs. 1 and 2.
In this case I do not'broadlyclaim a valve of the constructiondescribed since that is-the subject of my case filed March 29, 1912, Serial No. 687,176, Patent No. 1,086,794, and the invention here is in thenature of improvements in the adaptation ofsuch a valve.
What I claim is 1. In an internal combustion engine, a cylindrical valve chamber having inlet and outlet ports, a stationarylining in said valve chamber ported to register with the inlet and outlet ports in said chamber, a cylindrical valve adapted for resilient action within saidtlining and held in workingengagement therewith and provided with ports to cooperate with the ports in the l-ining, a supplementary valve on the outside of said lining interposed between the inner wall of the valve chamber and;the outer wall of the said lining and having a seat on said lining and connected with said inner valve for simultaneous movement therewith, and operative means for imparting an oscillatory movement to said valves.
2. In an internal combustion engine, a cylinder, a cylindrical valve-chamber, a port leading from the cylinder into the valve chamber, an exhaust port and an inlet port in said valve chamber, a stationary lining within said valve chamber and'having ports registering with the ports in said valve chamber, a cylindrical resilient valve within said lining having its seatthereon and having ports to register and unregister with .neous,movement therewith and held to its seat by the force of the compression or the force ofthe explosion, and operative means for imparting an oscillatory movement to said valves.
3. A valve casing provided with an inlet port for the passage of the motive fluid, and also provided with an exhaust port, a stationary lining within said casing and provided with a port in register withthe port insaidcasing, a cylindrical valve held in working engagement within said lining and provided with ports separately incased and passing through said valve, one of said ports being for the inlet and the other for the ex haust, a supplementary valve located at the outer side Ofithfi said lining and having its seat thereon and operatively connected with said inner valve for simultaneous movement therewith, and operative means for imparting oscillatory movement to said valves.
