ADJUSTABLE BOX-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 113, 11915.
Continuation of application Serial No. 828,039, filed March 28, 1914:. This application filed March 2, 1915. Serial No. 11,621.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. MOSTIZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable- Box-Holderaof which the following is a specification.
This application is a continuation of my prior application, Serial No. 828,039, filed March 28, 1914:.
The present invention comprises a device for holding boxes while being filled with merchandise, particularly, boxes of yielding extensible material.
The object of my invention is to provide a device which may be adjusted to snugly hold boxes of various sizes and from which the box may be removed easily and expeditiously after having been filled.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a holder, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view illustrating particularly the arrangement for ejecting the box from the holder.
My invention is particularly applicable for filling pasteboard boxes having a measured capacity with ice-cream or other semisolid merchandise, which may be packed in a pasteboard box. When ice-cream is packed in a pasteboard box, without supporting the sides of the box, the quantity introduced is likely to exceed in amount the measured capacity of the box. One reason for this is that the sides of the yielding box bulge out and the box thus holds more than intended. My invention not only enables an exact measured quantity of merchandise to be introduced but it also obviates tearing of the box and handle during the filling operation. Referring to Fig. 1 the holder comprises a base plate 1 supported upon a standard 2. The side walls 3, 4, 5 and6 are provided at their lower ends with movable {hinged plates 7. These hinged plates are ai'tached to the base-plate 1 by means of screws 8 passing through slots 9 in both the base plates 1 and the hinged plates 7. As better illustrated in Fig. 2, the side walls may be moved toward and away from each other when the wing nuts 10 are loosened. Two of the sidewalls located opposite to each other, namely, walls 4 and 5, are provided at their upper ends with slotted lugsll, 12, 13 and not illustrated in the drawing.
14. A tie rod 15 passes through the slots in lugs 11 and 12 and a similar rod 16 connects the lugs 13 and 14. The rods 15 also pass through lugs 17 on the side wall 3 and a similar construction is used for rod 16, but is The angular relation of the side walls with respect to the base plate may be adjusted by loosening thewmg nuts 18, moving the side walls as des red, and if necessary, adding washers between the wing nut and the lugs on the walls to give the desired inside dimensions for the holder. It will be noted that the side walls have a lesser diameter at the bottom than the top, thus giving a tapered shape to the holder. This shape of the holder is not merely fanciful but performs an important function, as when a tapered by the cam lever 22. The position of the bottom plate and the cam lever at the end of its upward travel is shown by dotted lines. The length of travel of the bottom plate may be adjusted by altering the length of the stem 21. This may be conveniently done by changing the position of the screw 23 in the end of the stem 21.
While I have described and illustrated one particular embodiment which my invention may assume it will of course be under stood that various other forms and modifications of the device may be used without departing from my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A device ,for holding boxes while being filled with merchandise, comprising a base plate, side walls supported on said plate, and means for adjusting the angular relation of the side Walls to said plate.
2 A device for holding boxes while being filled with merchandise, comprising a base plate, a pluralit of side walls movably attached to said p ate, slotted lugs on opposite edges of oppositely located side walls, tie rods passing through the slots in said lugs, and means for holding said rods in a position to bind said walls together.
8. A device for holding boxes while being filled with merchandise, comprising a base plate, a plurality of side walls, slotted hinges for each of said side walls, a screw passing through the slots of each of said hinges and the base plate to fasten said side Walls, slotted lugs on opposite edges of oppositely located side walls, tie rods passing through said slots, and means for fastening said tie rods. I
4. In a device for holding containers while being filled, the combination of a base plate, separately movable tapered side walls, means for adjusting the angle of inclination of said walls with respect to said base plate, a separately movable bottom plate, and
lln witness whereof, l have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of March 1915.
