Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December 30, 1913. Serial No. 809,546.
[o a?? litho/n. it may concern: i i
lie it known that "i, linwan'i) G. Hxxn, a citizen ot' the nited States, residing at Uttawa. in the county ot' La Salle and State ot' Illinoist have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rubbing-Iosts; and I do hereb declare the following to be a full, clear, andl exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsvv to make and use the same.
rl`his invention relates to rubbing posts, and the principal object thereof is the provision ot' means for placing di'sinecting oil in position to be spread upon the body of animals as they rub against parts ot the device.
A t'urther object is to provide an upper and lower reservoir and means for conveying the contents of the upper reservoir into the lower reservoir.
.i further object is to provide means for regulatingr the tlow ot' the product from the upper to the lower reservoir.
A still further object ot' the invention is the provision ot' a device of the class described, which will be simple, durable, ellicient in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
lith these and other objects in view, which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction.r combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed. and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate like -pa-rts throughout the figures, of which,
Figure l represents a vertical, sectional, view through a post constructed according to 'my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical. transverse, sectional view through the breast oiler, and, Fig. 3 represents a top plan view thereof. Fig. l is a sectional view taken on the line .fc-r/f of Fig. l looking upward. Fig. is a similar view taken on the same section line looking downward.
Referring more particularly to the drawings. the invention comprises a hollow post provided with an annular tiange 2 at its lower end whereby the post may be secured vto a platform or other suitable support 3,
and enlarged as at l. near its upper end to form an -oil reservoir. closed at its lower end b v a partition if. and at its upper end by a ca p T provided with a downwardly extending tlange 8 to engage the upper end of the post. tunnel shaped screen 9v is supported Ain the post immediately below closure T for straining the oil as the same is poured into the reservoir.
A plurality ot' pipes 10 are threaded at the inner ends into the lower portionot' the reservoir et, and at their outer ends are turned down as at 1l to form spou'ts lin spaced relation to the posts, and it is through these pipes that the' oil isdropped on to the backs ot' the hogs. The pipes l0 provided with valves 12 each connected by links 13 and Il to the upper end of a rubbing arm l5 pivoted at the outer end of a lug 1G in spaced relation to the post, and at a point above the center of the rubbing arm, said arm below said pivot point being roughened or corrugated as at 1T to atord a good scratching surface. lVhen the arms are in a vertical position as shown valves l2 are closed, but when an animal displaces one ot the arms byu-ribbing or leaning thereagainst the valve 12 is opened to allow oil to drip from one of the pipes on to the animal, and the valve is returned to closed position when the animal leaves by the tension of a spring l() disposed between the post 1 and the arm.
T he inward movement of the lower ends of the arms l5 is limited by set screwsdl, and by adjusting the set screws the extent of the movement of the valves 12 may be regulated as desired. Set screws 42 interposed between the post 1 and the upper ends ot' the arms 15 limit the outward movement of the lower ends of the' latter under the intiuence of the springs 40 as desired.
A pair of gua-rd members 18 substantially of an inverted U-shape in cross section, closed at their outer ends as at I9, having the inner end bifurcated to fit around the posts, are placed over pipes 10 for protecting the same, and are provided at their inner ends with flanges or oii'sets 20 con nected by bolts 2l for securing the guards in place on the post.
From the partition 6, extends downwardly and out through one wall of the post near the bottom, a pipe Q2 connected at its outer end to one end wall of a breast sci-atelier and oiler Q3, which is substantially rectangular in horizontal section and which is hollow, the upper or top wall 24 thereof being oppositely inclined and corrugated or roughened as at 25 to at'ord a scratching surface for the breasts and bellies of hogs` flanges 27 extending nearly to the bottom and in the slot is inserted a suitable wick 28, which extends a slight distance above the scratcher, and nearly to the bottom thereof, and which is adapted to soak up the oil contained in the scratcher and to transfer the same to the hides of the animals using the scratcher. The scratcher is provided with .a plurality of lugs 29 by means of which it may be secured to a suitof the scratcher,
a le base or to the ground, and it is also provided With a plugy 30 for filling the scratcher should it be desirable to use the same separate from the post, in which case the opening in the end through whichv pipes 22 extends would be plugged. Near the upper end of the" pipe 22 and below partition G, is provided a valve 31, stem 32 of which extends through the wall of the rubbing post so that the flow of oil through pipe 22 may be regulated. The scratcher could be used in a vertical position as well as horizontal should it be desired to do so.
Although I have described the preferred la breast scratcher mounted ,A rubbing post comprising; `Va hollow tubular support having a liquidi; reservoir to one side 'o the base of said support, means partly housed in said tubular support, to feed liquid from said reservoir to. said breast scratcher, and a rotary screw valve regulating device to said feeding means having a shank mounted through the walls of said support and adapted to be externally operated to regulate the feeding ofv liquid through said liquid feeding means.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name-to this specification inthe presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
