A further object of the invention is to provide an adjustable colter for the plow in advance of the land side.
A still further object of the invention is to improve the construction of the plow to give a very rigid or strong plow carrying frame readily adjustable in respect to the ground.
With the above object in view the invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter more particularly described and later pointed out in the appendedclaims.
Figure 1 is a side view of the complete plow. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3is an enlarged detailed side view of the front end of the plow. Fig. 4; is an enlarged detailed side view of the colter and adjoining parts. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detailed side view of the rear end of the pllow parts being shown in vertical section. Fig. 6 is a plan View of the forward portion of the frame. Fig. 7 is a front view of the plow.
In the drawings like characters of-reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
1 represents the plow frame presenting a central ring 2 from which extend front and rear beam sections 3 and 4:. The ring comprises the following parts ;-A central bar 5 bent into a circular form and having the ends thereof offset and bolted at 6 to the forward end of the beam section 4, a band 7 passed around the ring and having the ends bolted rearwardly at 8 to the beam 4: and a pair of outer bars 9 and 10 having the forwardendsfthereof forming in reality the beam 3, the body portion thereof passed around the band 7 and the rear ends thereof secured to the beam 4. The ring, band and bars are securely riveted or bolted together so that a very rigid structure is formed, the rear ends of the band and bars forming braces for the rear sections of the beam.
11 is a brace bar secured to the ring and passing forwardly to the forward end of the beam section 3 to which it is securely fastened by a bolt or rivet 12. The forward end of the bar 10 is cut short of the forward end of the bar 9 and the head 13 of the draw bar 13 is inserted between the for- Ward ends of the bars 9 and 11 to which bars it is secured by a cross bolt 14;, the bolt passing through a suitable slot 14: formed in the head.
The head. is provided with a series of spaced openings 15 and the bar body com prises a top and bottom member spanning the beam 3 and connected rearwardly by an upright bolt 16 located at the inner side of the ring and held to it by a strap 17. The draft animals which are attached to the head of the draw bar accordingly pull directly on the forward side of the ring. The rear end of the beam 4: stops short of the rear ends of the bars 9 and 10 and the bars are bent oppositely to pass around a flanged sleeve 18 which carries a vertically directed shaft 19 having the lower end supplied with a fork 20 carrying a rear caster wheel 21. The upper end of the shaft is formed with an enlarged head 19' on which I have swiveled a socket 22 supplied with a pair of upwardly directed lugs 23 carrying a pin 24 which supports a lever 25. The rear end of the lever is connected pivotally to a link 26 in turn fastened by a pin 27 to the ex tremities of the bars 9 and 10. A hooked catch bar 28 is secured permanently to the side ofthe bar 10 and receives the lever holding it normally in a horizontal position. The rear section 4L of the beam is in the present instance formed integral with the land side A of the plow the beam being actually a rearward extension of the landside.
B represents the plow' share which is secured by'bolts b to the land-side and C represents the inold-board which is carried by the share and has the rear end suitably connected by a brace c with the land-side.
D is a colter or cutting plate located immediately in advance of the land-side and having the upper end thereof adjustably connected to the ends of the bar 5 by means of a bolt d the bolt being carried in slots 03 provided in the ends of the bar. The upper corner of the land-side is cut away at an angle at A and a wedge 29 is inserted betweenthe upper end of the colter and the inclined end a of the land-side. The rear edge of the wedge is supplied with a number of notches 29 which are arranged to fit over the upper side of a permanent cross bolt 30 carried by the bars. This construction allows the lower end of the colter to be tipped oradjusted as it will be seen that one can, by undoing the bolt and varying the position of the wedge move and hold the upper end of the colter in various adjusted positions with the result that the lower end of the colter is tipped or tilted at different angles to the ground. The forward edge of the land-side is fitted with a projection 31 which is received within a suitable slot 32 formed in the rear side of the colter. This arrangement prevents the lower end of the colter from side play.
33 is a forward cross shaft having the ends thereof oppositely cranked at 33 and 33 the cranked end 33 receiving a carriage wheel 34. The shaft is mounted in a bearing plate 35 permanently secured to one side of the frame and a hanger 36 secured to the opposite side of the frame, the hanger being more or less in an inverted U-shape.
37 is a hand lever having the forward end pivoted on the shaft 33 adjoining the hanger and the lower portion thereof loosely connected by a strap 60 to a quadrant 38 carried by the ring 5. The rear end'of the lever is fitted with a hand latch 39 connected through a link 40 with a detent 41 operating over the quadrant.
42 is a second lever pivotally. secured at 43 to the lever 37 and having one end thereof offset at 42 and carrying a pivoted bracket 44 carrying slidably a rod 45 pivotally secured by a pin 46 to a permanent strap 47 located on a crank48 pivotally swung from the cross shaft 33. The crank 48 carries a second carriage wheel 49 similar to wheel 34.
50 is a quadrant permanently secured to the lever 37 and arranged concentric to the pivot pin 43. A strap 51 ties the lever 42 to the latter quadrant.
52 is a spring'on the rod 45 bearing at one end againstthe bracket 44 and at the opposite end against a stationary collar 53 located on the rod. The lever 47 is also supplied with a hand latch and detent, the detent operating over the quadrant 50. The
' end of the quadrant 50 secured to the lever 37 extends slightly to the side of said lever and carries a link 54 connected forwardly to the upturned crank 33 r The'construction just disclosed allows the attendant to adjust the carriage wheels together by swinging the lever 37 thereby raising or lowering the forward end of the frame. He can also cant the frame by adjusting the lever 42 which causes the crank 48 to swing on the shaft 33 and the carriage wheel 49 to swing upwardly and downwardly with the crank. The spring 52 permits the crank to spring up when the carriage wheel meets an obstruction. hen the plow is pulled over the ground the scrubbrush is cut by the colter and share, and is passed to the side of the mold-board. However if any of the scrub clings to the colter it will be passed upwardly through the ring and will not lodge on the plow. The ring also permits the attendant ready access to the colter from above.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The combination with a horizontally disposed ring and a beam section extending forwardly from the ring, of a draw bar formed with a head located at the forward end of the beam section and having the body portion spanning the beam section and secured rearwardly to the ring, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with a horizontally disposed ring, a beam section formed from a pair of connected bars, one of said bars being longer than the other, and a brace bar passing between the forward end of the beam section and the ring, of a draft bar having an enlarged vertically disposed head extending between the forward end of the brace bar and the forward end of the longer of the other bars and provided with an extending body spanning the beam section, a bolt connecting the rear ends of the body piece, said bolt passing through the ring and a strap fastening the bolt to the ring, as and for the purpose specified.
In a plow, a rear beam section, a central ring comprising a central bar bent into circular form and having its ends inturned and secured to said rear beam section, a band passed around a major portion of the ring thus formed and having straight rearwardly extending ends bolted to said rear beam section rearwardly of the point to which said central bar is secured, outer bars surrounding in part said band and having their rear ends secured to said rear beam section, rearwardly of the point to which said band ends are secured, the other ends of said outer bars extending forwardly of said ring and forming a forward beam section and means securing said inner bar, band and outer bars together.
