To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JESSE H. HALL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Crossett, in the county of Ashley and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and Improved Silo-Door, of, which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
My invention relates to silo doors and silo hoops for enoirclingthe silo between adjacentdoor openings.-
Objects of my invention are to provide silo doors that, may be readily detached to permit the removal of the contents of the silo at a particular level, and that may be readily replaced after the level of the material is lowered; to provide hinges for the doors so formed. and arranged as to permit a parallel opening and closing movement of the door relative to the door opening, whereby to insure'a firm seating of the door against the inside of the door frame; to provide a combination fitting which will embody means to engage a silo hoop between two adjacent doors as well as a ladder elementand hinge elements, so that the securing of the fitting on the. silo to receive the hoop will properly position the ladder elements and the hinge elements; and to provide door securing means that will effectively and tightly hold the door in position, and which may be manipulated with facility in opening and in fastening the door.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appearfrom the particular description following:
Reference is had to the. accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- 7 Figure l is a, fragmentary front. elevation of a silo equipped with my improved doors and their appurtenances; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal; section on the line 33, of Fig. 1; Fig, 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line 44, Fig, 1; and Figs. 5 to 11' are separate perspective views of various elements entering into my invention, and to be hereinafter particularly referred'to.
In constructing a practical embodiment of my invention in accordance with the illustrated example, the doors. 10 are provided in a vertical series on a silo 11, as usual. On the silo between the doors are arranged. horizontal fittings 12 presenting bearing plates to receive the hoops 14, said plates, being provided with bolt holes 12 to receive securing bolts 13, or the like, On each plate at the front is an integral bow or loop 15 in the inclined sides of which holes 16 are formed for the passage of the hoops ll. The loops 15 are thus ofi'set at the front of the fittings 12, and, they are disposed nearer. one end of the fittings than the other. Thus formed and positioned, the loops 15 constitute hand holds and foot holds, and thereby form ladder elements. The positioning of the loops 15 at one end of the fittings 12 disposes them in conveni'entposition for manipulation of the door fastener hereinafter described.
Referring particularly to Figs. 3 and 5, it will be seen that each fitting 12 has flanges 18, 19, near each end extending rearwardly from the base of the fitting and forming with, the ends 12 rabbets 17 so that the flanges 18, 19, extend r'earwardly in the door opening while the ends 12? he against and are secured to the front of the silo at the door opening,
Integral with the fittings 12 at one end thereof are vertically disposed members 20, 21, projecting above and below the base plates. of the fittings 12 adjacent to the flanges 19 and inward from the adjacent ends 12 of the base plate. The upwardly projecting member 20has a bracket 21 having a hinge pin 22 therein, and similarly the lower depending vertical member 20 has a bracket 21 with an upwardly projecting hinge pin 22*, By this construction the securing of the fitting 12 to .the silo at the door provides in addition to the bearing plate for the hoop 14, the ladder elements 15, and at the same time providesand properly positions the hinge pin 22 for the lower end of one door 10 and. the hinge pin 22 for the upper end of the next lower door 10. In addition to the bolts 13 securing the fitting 12, the vertical members 20, 20*, are formed with bolt holes 23 for receiving bolts or screws 24;.
Each hinge pin 22, 22*, receives a strap strap 25 is oifset adjacent to'the eye 25 so that the said hinge strap clears a vertical cleat which is applied to the door 10. On the door 10 also there is near the opposite edge a second vertical cleat 31, and a third broader cleat 32 is applied to the door between the cleats 30, 31. It will be seen that the door body 10 is somewhat larger than the door opening, so as to overlap the silo or door frame at the inside, while the cleats 30, 31, 32, are received in the door opening, line with the silo body. By thushinging the door 10, it will be seen that it may have a parallel movement relatively to the door opening in swinging on its hinges, and moreover, the door may be readily removed to afford access to the material in the silo adjacent to the particular door.
Also, the door may be replaced with facility when the level of the material has been lowered below aparticular door and the next lower door has been removed to afford access to the silo.
In order to fasten the door in position, a
' fastener bar 33 is pivoted for vertical movement on the outer face of the door, being Q pivotally secured near one end to the cleat 32. As seen best in Fig. 7, the fastener bar has a short base plate 34 at one end, which extends toward the free end of the fastener bar 33, and the latter is offset from the base plate. I Saidbase plate is formed with a bolt hole 34 to receive a fastening bolt or screw 35 on which the fastener bar may have pivotal movement. Keeperv members are pro vided for the fastener bar both on the door adjacent to the hinged edge thereof and on the silo. Thus there is on the cleat 30 a keeper 36 (see Fig. 11) having bolt holes 36 to receive bolts or screws 36 and on the face plate 36 is a bracket 38 having its front end 38 upturned and slightly out-turned. A second bracket plate 37 is applied to the silo 11, and is formed with holes 37 a to receive bolts or screws 39, and has a horizontal bracket 40 formed with an up-turned end 41 and an inclinedbrace or deflecting bar 42, all the elements being integral with the bracket plate 37 By the described construction it will be seen, referring particularly to 1, that the fastener bar 33 may be swung on its pivot 35 vertically to engage or disengage the up-turned ends 38*, 41, of the respective keepers 36, 37. Preferably the fastener bar has a horizontal rib 33 on the face thereof, which overlies the ups turned end 41. In engaging the respective keepers 36, 37, the bar is forced outwardly by the incline presented by the bar 42 so that the body of the door will be pressed tightly against the rear or inner face of the silo or door opening.
In connection with the fastener bar 33 a latch 43 is provided and pivotally secured as at 43 adjacent to the pivot 35 at the opposite side of the said pivot from the keepers 36, 37. The latch 43 has both sliding and rocking movement in a keeper 44 applied to the door at the cleat 31. Said keeper may have bolt holes 44 to receive bolts 45. It will be obvious, referring to Fig. 1, that in the rocking of the fastener bar 43 to engage or disengage the keeper bars 36, 37, adjacent to the hinged edge of the door, the latch 43 will be moved to and from the outer face of the silo at the side of the door opening, so as to co-act with the keepers 36, 37 in preventing inward movement of the door.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a silo having door openings, and hoops between the door openings, of doors to close said openings, hinge straps on the door, and fittings applied to the exterior of the silo between the doors and presenting base plates forming bearing plates for said hoops, said plates having integral offset horizontal loops ranging lengthwise thereof at the front, said loops having openings at the ends to receive the hoops, the said fittings furthermore having at an end thereof vertical bars extending upwardly and downwardly at the back of the base plate, each vertical bar having a hinge pin.
2. A fitting for silos, comprising a base plate adapted to be secured to a silo between door openings and forming a bearing for a hoop, said fitting having an offset loop at the front, disposed lengthwise at the base plate to constitute a ladder element.
3. A fitting for silos, comprising a base plate adapted to be secured to a silo be tween door openings and forming a hearing for a hoo said fitting having an offset loop at the front, disposed lengthwise at the base plate to constitute a ladder element, said loops having holes at the ends thereof for the passage of a hoop.
4. A unitary fitting for silos, comprising a bearing for a hoop, a ladder element and hinge elements, the said fitting comprising a base constituting a bearing plate for the hoop, there being an offset loop on the plate at the front to form a ladder step, and members upwardly and downwardly disposed on the base at an end thereof, said name to this specification in the presence of members having hinge elements thereon, tWo subscribing Witnesses.
