Description
W. F. BROWN. SAW SHARPENEH. APPLYICATIDN FILED OCT. n. 1912.
Patented July 6, 1915.
WILLIAM F. BROWN, OF WOMBLE, ARKANSAS.
'SAW-SI-IARPENER. 7
Application filed October 11, 1912. Serial No. 725,265.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Womble, in the county of Montgomery and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Saw-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a saw sharpener or gummer, and resides in the novel construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts set forthin the following description, and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings which accompany this specification, andwhich form a part thereof there has been illustrated a satisfactory reduction of the device to practice, but it is to be understood that the showing therein is merely illustrative, and that the device is susceptible to such changes in material, size, proportion and details of construction as will fall within the scope of the appended claim. 1
In the said drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional View through the same and the mandrel turned at right angle to the stand from its position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken approximately upon the line XX of Fig. 1.
My device is adapted to be erected upon the filing bench where the saw is finished, and the frame thereof is preferably constructed of pipe sections and connections, whereby the same may be taken down, and packed for storage or transportation at a minimum amount of time and labor, and also whereby the same may be easily set up when desired.
Furthermore it is my purpose to construct a machine whereby various sizes of saws may be gummed, and whereby any desired pitch or bevel will be imparted to the teeth of the saw so that saws for various purposes, such as saws for out ofl's rip saws or edger saws may be readily sharpened and gummed.
In the device illustrated by the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a filing bench, and 2 the frame of my improvement which is mounted upon the bench. This frame is preferably constructed of a plurality of pipe sections or rods, and comprises side members 3 and 4, each of the same being of a similar construction, and each embodying Specification of Letters Patent.

a pair of spaced uprights, 5 having their lower extremities and their upper extremities provided with removable couplings 7.
The. numerals 8 designate the connecting members for the up-rights which are removably secured to the couplings. The con necting members 8 are centrally provided with in-turned bearings 9, that includes a detachable bushing 9 which can be renewed when worn out, for the reception of a shaft 10. The bearing members 8 have also connected therewith a substantially rectangular frame 11, the same being preferably con structed of pipe members and couplings therefor, and the said frame is pivotally secured to the bearings 9. The frame 11 is provided with a rearwardly extending member or arm 12 upon which is arranged a weight 13. The weight 13 is slidable upon the arm 12, and is sustained in an adjusted position upon the said arm through the medium of a thumb screw 14. The f0rward end of the frame 11 has connected thereto a substantially U-shaped member 15, the said member being also preferably formed of pipe sections, and couplings for the sections. The longitudinal arms of the Ushaped member 15 have their extremities provided with couplings forming bearing 16, and arranged for rotation within the said bearings is a second shaft 17. The shaft extends a suitable distance through the oppositely arranged bearing 16 and has one of its ends provided with a fly wheel 18, while the opposite projecting end has secured thereto a saw filing and gumming member which is in the nature of an emery wheel 19. Secured upon the shaft 17 between the longitudinal arms of the Ushaped member 15 is a belt wheel 20, the said wheel being arranged forward of a similar belt wheel 21 which is connected with the shaft 10, while the numeral 22 designates an end less belt for the said wheels. The shaft 10, which may be termed the power shaft of the device, is further provided with a second belt wheel 23, and the numeral 24 designates the belt which acts upon the said wheel 23 and which in turn is connected with any suitable source of power (not shown). Secured to the couplings forming the bearing 16 are the arms of a substantially U-shaped handle 25, the same being disposed conveniently to the operator, so that the pivoted frame, and emery wheel may be brought to offset to provide feet 6,
a desired angle to permit of the emery wheel properly acting upon the teeth of the saw.
Arranged upon the upright 5 of the frame adjacent the wheel 19 is a collar 26, the said collar being sustained in an adjusted'positionupon the said upright through the medium of a binding screw 27 The numeral 28 designates a member or arm which is secured to the collar 26, and the said arm has its outer extremity enlarged. The enlarged portion of the arm is provided with a vertically arranged threadedopening which is adapted for the receptionof a threaded member 29, and the said member 29 may be, and preferably is sustained against rotation through the medium of a binding screw 80. The upper extremity'of the member. 29 has connected thereto a saw mandrel 31. This mandrel 31 is preferably rotatably secured upon the screw 29, but is also normally sustained against rotation through the medium of a binding element, in the form of a bolt 32 which passes through a suitable threaded opening in the mandrel and which contacts with the upper extremity of the threaded member 29. The mandrel has its outer face provided with a cam lever 33 whereby a saw 34: is clamped upon the mandrel after the said saw has its central opening passed over the cam lever and upon the mandrel.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be noted that the mandrel may be adjusted vertically of the frame 2 to sustain the saw in a proper position to be operated upon by the filing wheel 19; that the saw may be inclined to permit of the wheel 19 imparting a desired bevel to the teeth; that =the threaded member 29 affords a minute adjustment of the saw and mandrel, after the arm 28 has been adjusted and sustained upon the upright of the frame 2; also that the wheel 19 is removable so that other sharpening wheels of varying thicknesses and diameters may be arranged upon the shaft 17, and from the above it is thought that the advantages and operation of the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
