Be it known that I, NELsoN WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chute-Gates fog CoinDelivery 'Machines, of which the foliewing is a specification.

This mvention has reference particularly to inaclnnes of the class designedto handle money, such as mechanical cashiers, or coin delivery or changing machines. Itis'quite common in this type of machines to employ a chute or chutes into which the coin ormoney is dropped in delivering it to 't-he operator.

The primary object of the present inven tion is to provide a peculiar closure or gate-- for a chute of the kind referred'to, though the device of the invention is susceptible of application to containers or receptacles of all classes having in view the results ob tained by its use, as set forth specifically hereinafter.

The closure or gate devised by me is manually movable to open a discharge opening of the chute, and inits movement a guide codperates therewith in an especially advantageous manner asa guide, amovement limiting means, and a-latch to hold the closure in predetermined position.

A complete knowledge of the invention to enable the cbnstruction of means in accordance therewith wilbbe obtained upon a review of the following detail description, and

reference to the annexed drawings, in;

which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a chute such as used upon moneyhandling machines of a certain type, the gate or closure means embodying the essential features of the present invention being applied to said chute to control the discharge opening of thesame. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the chute, bringing out more clea-rlythe mounting of the guide means. Fig. i is a vertical transverse sectionalview taken about on the line l4i of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of theclosure or gate alone.

In. the drawings, A denotes the chute to which the closure or gate B is applied, said chute taperingdownwardly toward its cen The closure B is of curved form and snugly fits against the edge portion of the chute dischargeop ening, as will be readily apparent upon reference to Fig. 1. A hanger 1 constitutes an integral vertical extension of the closure B, and 1s pivotally connected A. bodily with the closure B in order to aiford movement of the latter sufiicient to open and close the chute discharge opening.

On the rear side of the chute A. is ar ranged a guide 3 having ofi's et portions 4 intermediate its'ends to provide stops limiting the extent of swinging movement of the closure B and hanger l in opposite directions. The hanger 1 passes through a space between the guide 3 and the rear side of the chute A. The guide 3 is peculiarly mounted, having a pivotal connection 5 with the chute A, whereby a slight rocking movement of the guide is permitted. A coiled spring 6 is connected with one end of the guide 3 and with the hanger 1 intermediate the ends of the latter, and performs the dual function of holding the closure B in its normal at its upper end, as shown at-2, to the chute Said hanger l is adapted to swing position closing the discharging opening of the chute A, andalso holding the guide 3 in the normal position in which it is shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The end of the guide 3 opposite that connected with the spring 6 has a pin and slot connection 78 with the chute A and is'forme d with the downwardly extending finger piece 9. Between the finger piece 9 andthe pivot 5 of the guide 3, the latter is formed with a catch 10. A pin 11 projects forwardly from the hanger 1 of the .closure B, and is movable with said hanger, the catch 10, however, being located in the path of movement of said pin,- when the guide 3 is in its normal position.

The construction of the parts of the in- 'vention having been set forth, the co-action of said parts will now be described. The operator by engaging his hand with the handie or finger piece 12, which projects down- Leasily movethe closure B in the direction of a closure under normal conditions, and means to effect movement of the guide member to any other suitable point of the catch- 10, in order to open the discharge opening of the chute A and permit the contents of said chute to drop into the hand, or

Obviously, under certain conditions I itis des rable to maintain the closure B temporarily in open position, thus permitting coins or other articles droppedinto the chute A to pass directly therefrom through its discharge opening. \Yith this in view, the guide 3 has been mounted in'the movable manner before set forth, making it only n.ec'

This action elevates the catch 10 sutliciently to permit the pin 11 to pass the'same, whereupon pressure on the finger, piece 9 will be relieved and the catch 10 will now engage at its upper side with. the pin 11.to practically lock the closure B in an open position, from which it may be released readily by again raising the guide 3 through operation of the member 9. Having in view the foregoing, it ivill be obvious that the guide 3 constitutes not only a guide, but a latch capable ofholding the closure 13 in an open position. The invention comprehends that any other construction of .the chute A or equivalent receptacle than that illustrated may be employed, so long as adapted to permit of the use of the closure means hereinbefore' de- 1. In combination, a receptacle having an opening, a hanger mounted on the receptacle and provided with a closure for said opening, means for operating the closure to control discharge of the contents ofthe'receptacle through the opening, a guide member pivoted at one end to the receptacle, apin and slot connection intermediate the other end of the guide member and the receptacle, means on the hanger and the guide member for limiting the opening movement of the closure, and a finger piece projecting from the guide member for moving the same to cause the portion of the limiting means on the guide member to coact with the limiting means'on the hanger whereby to maintain the closure in an open position.
