*c'lfica'tion of Letters Patent.
Application, filed August 2-3, 1913. aerial silo. 386,209.
To all whom it may, concern Be it known that I. ALVIN Butt, :1 citizen of the United States, residing at Nicholson, in the county of 'W oming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and.UsefulImprovements iii Devicesfoir Operating Dumping-Buokets, of which the following is a. specification, refrsnce being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention refers to it clumping devise for buckets, more particularly largo buckets designed to contain lair-53o qimntities of saith, clay, broken stone or other n'iaterial.
The objectof the invention is tosmibls tho buckets or receptacles of this kind to disoharg'etlisir contents with the eiqpEnditm-o of as little power as possible and by a simple and efficient trip meclizmism. which is easily and quickly operated.
Tho invention, therefore, consists essontially in the construction. :ii'1"m1gemm1t and combination of the various. parts, siibstztrr tially will loo hereinafter (lesoribocl and then more particularly pointed out in this claims.

Ellins tho-pin can OPCNI3Y= lit oi o tannin-it i, "he 'l'ectis in. its op as this is the important object of the invention, and it is necessary that 'it should be accomplished by mechanism whose details are simple and yet effective. To this end I employ a trip lever which is pivoted at 22 to the side of the notched projection -17. The trip lever 21, at its pivoted end, is formed with a rounded enlargement which is notched at 23 for the purpose of receiving the bolt in said notch. These particular features are indicated in Fig. 1 where it is seen that the pin or bolt 20, when it lies in the notch 18 in the projection 17, will also be engaged by the notch 23 in the pivoted end of the lever 21. The form of the notch 23 as also the form of the pivoted end 21 may vary within considerable limits. It is important that this lever 21 should have on the other side of its pivot 22 a short projection which can rest beneath the pin 20, so that when the free end of the lever 21 is pulled down, the pin 20 will be raised and lifted out of the notch 18 for the purposes of setting free the locking bar 14 of the latch 11, and it is also important that the notch 23 should look the pin 20 until it is time to dump the bucket. A spring 24 is attached to the lever 21 and also to the hook bar 1, or to one of the clamps 6, and serves to hold the lever 21 in its upper position, as shown in Fig. 1, and to return it to that position after a releasing of the parts has been effected at each dumping operation, so that the spring thus keeps the lever 21 and its notched end 23 in position to allow a locking engagement of the notch with the pin 20 to be easily made from time to time. It is desirable that the notch 23 should be employed rather than merely a short end of the lever 21 beyond the pivot, because the notch furnishe's an inner wall that will bear against the pin 20 as the spring pulls up the lever 21 and will thus keep the one side of the notch in proper position under the pin 20 at all times when the parts are actively related for service. The cable or cord 25,
which is attached to the outer end of the trip bar 21, may be any suitable kind of a rope,-cable or cord running to some point where it can be easily operated, and it will be found that only a slight expenditure of power will be necessary to actuate the tripper sufiiciently to disengage the pin 20 from the notch 18.
. The form of bucket with which my improved r elease device is generally used is preferably of a formhaving two bails at the top and twin doors opening at the bottom.
One of the bails is like that shown at 26 which is attached to the top of the bucket 1 and is permanently engaged by the hook 2. The other bail 3, which rests on the latch arm 13 when the bucket is being loaded and carried, is connected by suitable levers 27. as shown, to the doors 28 at the bottom of the bucket. Obviously when the' bail 3 is released, the weight inside of the bucket will pull down thebail through the said levers, and the doors will automatically open and discharge the contents of the bucket. The parts can all be reset for another filling of the bucket simply lifting the bail and placing it again upon the latch arm 13, after the locking arm 14 has been locked in place by the pin 20 and the tripper 21 set in place for further action in' dumping when required.
Many changes in the precise construction and arrangement of the various parts may be made without exceeding the invention, and I reserve the liberty of making all such changes as may in. practice be found desirable or necessary.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a bucket having doors and a hook for supporting said bucket, of a. pivoted latch for the bucketdoors, said latch having a locking arm and also a bucket-engaging arm, means for restraining said locking arm when the latch is in its operative position, consisting of a swivel device and a pin pivoted thereto so as to be adjustable in two directions, and means for releasing said pin consisting of a pivoted trip lever engaging the pin.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a bucket having doors and means for engaging and supporting said bucket, of a pivoted latch carried by said means, said latch having a bucket-engaging arm and also a locking arm, a swivel device, a pin pivoted thereto so as to be adjustable in two directions. said pin having the tune tion of holding the locking arm in position when the latch serves to hold the bucket doors closed, and a tripper for said pin consisting of a pivoted lever notched to engage the pin.
3. In a releasing device of the character described, the combination of a bucket having dumping doors and a hook for supporting said bucket, a bail connected with the dumping doors of the bucket. a pivoted latch engaging said bail, said latch having also a locking arm, a swivel bolt, a pin pivoted to said swivel bolt for holding the locking arm in position when the latch keeps the dumping doors closed, and a trip lever engaging the pin.
4. In a releasing device of the class described, the combination of a hook bar. a companion latch-supporting bar, means for securing the two bars together, a latch pivoted to the latch-supporting bar and having a bucket-engaging arm and also a locking arm, a pin pivoted to a swivel device so as to be adjustable in two directions, said pin niaaeea serving to lock the latch arm, and means for releasing said pin, consisting oi a pivoted trip lever engaging the pin, together with a I spring for returning the tripper after each tripping action.- p a 5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a hook bar, a latch-supp rting bar, means for securing the bars together, a latch pivoted to the latch-support ing bar and having a bucket-engaging arm. and also alocking arm, a swivel device, a pin pivoted thereto, and means for releasing said pin consisting of a notched trip lever pivoted adjacent to saidpin.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination with a bucket having a fixed bail and also dumping doors to which a movable bail is connected, means for supporting the fixed bail, a latch device pivoted to said means and having an arm engaging the movable bail and also a locking arm, means for restraining said locking arm when the dumping doors are closed, said means comprising a swivel pin. and a pin pivoted thereto so as to be adjustable in two directions, together with means for releasing the latter pin, consisting of a pivoted trip lever engaging the pin.
In a release device of the character described, the combination of a hook bar, a pivoted latch having a bucket engaging arm and also a locking arm, a swivel device, a pin pivoted to said swivel device so as to be adjustable in two directions, and a notched and pivoted lever for engaging and releasing said pin.
8. In combination with a dumping bucket having a fixed bail, dumping doors and a movable 'bail connected to said doors, of means for engaging the fixed bail and supporting the bucket, and a pivoted latch 'engaging the movable bail, together with means for tripping said latch comprising a swivel pin, a pin pivoted thereto so as to be adjustable in two directions, and a notched trip lever engaging said pin.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of tWo'Witnesses.
