SAMUEL HUGHES, 0F BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA.
COASTER.
. childrcns coasters and has for its principal object the construction-of a simple rugged device of the character named having improved means by guided or directed.
which the same may be Specification of. Letters Patent.
In my improved device three wheels are provided, tn 0 in the" rear in order to provide a stable device and a single front wheel which serves todirect the course ofthe coaster. A pivotally connected handle is attached to thissteering wheel soas to accommodate itself to the heightandposition of theuser. Another advantage of this device is that it may be pulled by its handle in the manner of a wagon. Still another advantage of the present structure is that the front guiding wheel 'anay lie-turned by throwing the handle from side to sidethus securing easier steering control than by the usual twisting movement common to other toys of this character.
\Vith these andother objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of; parts as herein described and specifically pointed out in the appended claim. Reference should he had .to the accompanying drawing forminga part of this specification wherein,
Figure l is a view in side elevation of the coaster constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a. top plan view having the central portion broken away. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the forward end of my improved device. Fig. 1 is a view in section on -l-i. Fig.
l)c no ting'corrcsponding parts by the same numerals of reference. 1 is a platform having attached outhc underside :uljacc'nt'the rear end thereof the wheels 2, the forward portion being.narrowcd as shown at 3, and the end of this portion being rounded, andbcvclcd on the undcrsideas at 4. Attached on the undcisidcof 2-3 is a bracket ."rhaving ears and the platform holds the two togcthcr. ()n the forward end, of the bracket Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each. by addressing the Commissioner Washington, D. C.

is an angular upwardly extending and concave portion 8. which fits the curved portion of the platform andthe underside thereof is finished to provide abearing surface for the moving portion of the device. Pivotally attached to this bracket by means of a bolt .9" is a frame 10, whiehis bifurcated and provided with a shaft 11 extending through the lower end thereof uponwhich ispivotally mounted the wheel 12' and between the upper portions of this bifurcation is pivotally attached a rod 13, which serves to turn the frame 10. The latter isprovided with a flat surface 9, which rests on the bez'iring surface of bracket 5.. and these two surfaces are formed at an .angle of approximately degrees to the surfaceof the platform 1; consequently. when the latter member is turned on bolt .9 as a pivot the wheel 12 is rdckeid from side to side and at the same time inclined so as to cause the coaster to move on a curve. In this manner there is secured a. device, which is easily and accurately guided, and which is not liable. to upset as in the usual two-wheel coasters with fixed wheels, which are guided by swaying the body from side to side. Also owing to the manner in which the handle is attached-the user may ride either in a standing or sitting position.
safe in use and inexpensive to manufacture.
\Yhile I have shown the PI'QfGIl'Qtl embodiment of my invcntioni it will be understood that minor changes may be made in detail design and form of parts without deiparting from the spirit thereof.
1 claim: In a toyof the character described com prising a platform. front and rear wheels.
the said front wheel being pivotally mounted in a f ramc'.'a bracket secured to the under"- side of the platform at the front end thereof, the face of said bracket inclined rcarwardlv at anacutc angle to the platform. a frame pivotally secured to said inclined face. the front wheel pivotally secured in said frame and a handle.pivotally mounted in saidframe above said \vhccl.
