JAMES S. ALEXANDER, 0F LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINED CHAIR AND FOLDNG TABLE-TOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1915.
Application iled August 25, 1913. Serial No. 786,400.
T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that l, JAMES ALEXANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles,
State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Chairs and Folding Table-Tops, of which the following is a spcciiication.
r1`his invention relates to a combined chair with a folding table top, and the principal object is to provide a chair having means for readily converting the same into a table.
1t is also an object to provide a table with folding leaves which may be either extended to form a table top or folded to provide a back for a chair.
lt is a further object to provide means for securing a table forming member in pivotal and adjustable relation to the frame forming the chair so that the latter is readily converted and adjusted.
ln the drawings accompanying this speciication and forming therewith the application foi` Letters Patent: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the structure as a chair, the transitional stage being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the convertible table top in position as a table. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the structure as a table. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the rear of the folded table member as a chair back. Fig. 5 is a transverse section thereof on the line 5`5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detail of the roller supporting bracket. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the table top mounting as seen frombelow.
More specically in the drawings, 7 designates the seat of the chair of substantially rectangular form having t-he front legs 8 and the rear legs 9 upon which are supported on each side the arm 10 which is of a flat broad configuration, having a portion of its width cut out adjacent the connection of the rear legs 9 so that the movable member 11, adapted to form alternately a back for the chair or a table top when'unfolded to be supported upon the arms of the chair, can be moved without materiallyl reducing its fixed width when used as a back for the chair.
Secured to the under face of the arms is the bracket 12 on the forward end of a track 14 supported parallel with the lower face of thc arm, the rearwardly disposed end being .'1 secured to the inner face of the rear legs 9 and extending rearwardly therefrom is a notched extension 15, the notches being formed on the upper side and being adapted to receive the pin 16 secured to the central j portion of the movable member 11. A stop 17 is secured to the arm at the rear end thereof, the fastenings also extending into the legs 9, the looped portion of the stopextending slightly above the top of the arms.
The movable member 11 consists mainly of a central portion of the desired length and of a width adapted to form a back foi` the chair, upon which member are hinged two side leaves 19 and 20 by means of suitable butt-hinges. On the lower face of the central portion 11 serving as a table are secured a plurality of brackets, the first pair of brackets 21 providing a pivot, one for each end of the bar of the yoke 22. The side members of the yoke form links, the oppositely disposed ends of which are pivotally secured to the inner face of the legs 9 at the point 23. A second bracket 24 is provided which is also secured adjacent the outer edge of the member 11 approximately midway of its ends and the angled arm 25 of the bracket forms a support' for the pin 16 previously mentioned and a stub shaft 26 having mounted thereon the grooved roller 27 which is adapted to engage in the track 14.
On the outer or lower faces of the leaves adjacent the bracket 21 are secured the braces 28 which project a slight distance beyond the hinged edge and are adapted to rest upon the top of the arms when used as a table, the projecting end fitting under the central portion of the movable member 11. Near the oppositely disposed ends of these leaves are pivoted bars 29 and 30, these bars being adaptedito overlap one another intermediate of their pivoted points 32 and are preferably cut out as shown so that their cut-away portions interlock and are engaged by clips 33 which are secured to the same face as these pivoted bars.
On the inner face of one of the legs 9 a lever 84 is pivoted at 35 so that its dependent arm 36 engages with the end of the arm on the yoke 22 secured to the movable member and when it is desired to change the inclination of the back, movement of the lever 34 in the direction indicated by the arrows forces the arm back, lifts the pin 16 from engagement with the notch engaged and allows it to fall in one of the lower notches of the extension 15.
ioo
l/Vhen it is desired to change to a table from the chair position the movable member is drawn forwardly at the top, the roller 27 traveling along` the track until it reaches the forward end secured to the arm 10 when the leaves 19 and 2O may be released by disconnecting the bars 29 and 80 from their clips and the leaves folded over the eXtensions on the bars, the bars 28 abutting against the clips 17 and preventing displacement in relation to the chair frame now acting as a support for the table top, the bars 29 and 30 also extending under the central member and resting upon the forward end of the arm so that a solid table is provided.
lVhat 1 claim is:
1. A combined chair and folding table, comprising a chair seat, front and rear legs therefor, supporting arms, a track secured to the underside of each of said arms and to the inner sides of said rear legs, a movable member, links connecting said movable member to said rear legs, a bracket on said movable member, a roller on said bracket adapted to travel on said track and forming a pivotal support for said member, a pin on said bracket, and means on said track engageable with said pin to limit the pivotal movement of said movable member in one direction so as to retain it in an inclined position.
2. A combined chair and table, comprising a chair seat, front and rear legs therefor, supporting arms, a track secured to the underside of each of said arms and extending rearwardly of the rear legs having notches on its extended portion, a panel, link connections between said panel and the rear legs, rollers on the panel adapted to travel on said tracks to facilitate rocking the movable member to and from a hori- Zontal position, and forming a pivotal support -for the movable member, and pins on said movable member engageable with the notches on the tracks to limit the pivotal movement of the movable member.
3. A combined chair and table, comprising` a chair seat, front and rear legs therefor, fiat arms supported upon said legs, a movable table section, a pivoted yoke connected to said movable section and said rear legs, a track mounted upon the underside of said arms, a bracket secured to said movable section, a roller mounted on said bracket adapted to engage said track forming a pivotal support for said movable section, a pin on said bracket engageable with said track to limit the pivotal movement of said movable section, hinged leaves secured to said movable section, cross bars adapted to interlock, means to lock said arms with the leaves in folded position, a stop to engage said table top when resting upon said arms, and a lever adapted to engage said yoke when the movable section is in position to form a back for said chair, whereby the movable section may be shifted to different inclinations.
4i. 1n a combined chair and table having a chair seat and front and rear legs therefor with arms supported upon said legs, a horizontally extending track arranged beneath each of said arms having a rearward extension formed with a series of notches, a movable table section, a roller on said table section adapted to travel on said track and form a pivotal support for said movable section, a bracket carrying said roller,v
and a pin on said bracket engageable with the notches on the track to limit pivotal movement of said table section.
1n witness that claim the foregoing l have hereunto subscribed my name this 15th day of August, 1913.
