Description

A. 0. BUCKIUS, Jn.
JOURNAL BOX.
APPLlcATloN FILED Dc.23. |913.

...NUMA @i I. .HUI
ABLE CAsTINGs COMPANY, or CLEVELAND, oLiTo.-y 1V To all whom 'it may concern Beit known that I, ALBERT O. BUCKIUS, Jr., a citizenof theUnited States, residi'ng at Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have infvented new and useful Improvements in Journal-Boxes, o f which the following is a specification, reference-being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a section of a journal box embodying my invention and showing the lid inI close position; Fig. 2 is a section showing the lid in opened position; Fig. 3 is a section of the box showing the lid-operating mechanism in elevation,]and Fig` 4 is an elevation of mechanism for securing the lid to lthebox.
invention relates to ournal boxes and 4 provides a box having a lid held tightly closed against all movements, except a pivotal one, by a spring lever regardless of the wear and tear to which the lid andmeeting faces of the box may be subjected. i
My invention also consists in the improved construction which I shall hereinafter describe and claim.
Referring to the drawings, 2 indicates the journal boxand 3 the journal box lid. The box 2 has bosses 4 concentric with the axis of the hinge pin 5, which seats in the pin apertures of the hinge lug 6. The lid 3 is attached to the box 2 by circular socket bearings 7, which bear on the bosses 4, and by the hinge pin 5. The lever and spring mechanism is comprised of a spring 8 ofsubstantially U-shape, in each arm of which are formed coils of loops 9, which provide registering apertures 10 for the insertion of a pin 11 upon which the spring 8 has its pivot. The upper or closed end 12 of the spring 8 is bent at anl angle to the body of the spring, and mounted thereon is a wear.-y
ing shoe 13. rlhe shoe 13, which is pref-y erably attached to the part 12 by bendable lugs 14, provides a cam surface adapted to engage and slide upon the cam surfaces 15` and 16 of the hinge lug 6.
The ends "17 of the spring 8 are secured in small-pockets 18 formed in the lid 3 near itsl inside lower edge, andthe 4spring is pivoted intermediate of its length' by the pin 11, the ends of which seat in sockets 19 on the inner face of the lid. The sockets 19 are open at their upper sides, as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, to permit insertion of the pin 11.

the lid against, rather than away from, the box by reason of its bearing against the cam surface 15, the lid will nevertheless `remain pin 5 be removed or broken.`
l As the reaction of the i spring lever 8 against the lid tends to hold tion the shoe 13 moves across the cam surface 15, thereby increasing the compressionv Aof the spring until the lid has beenv moved so that the rear end of the shoe 13 has passed `the meeting point 20 of the cam surfaces 15 and 16, from which point it will slide along the camsurface16 and will allow the spring i l 8 to rexpand. The spring 8 is under com-` pression at all times, but it is under the greatest compressionwhen ythe rear end of the shoe 13 is passing the meeting point20 of the cam surfaces 15 and .16, from which j* point the spring 8, in rexpanding, throws` the lid positively either to openv or toclosed It is obvious that various changes may be made in the construction which I'have shown and described herein withoutk departing from my invention.
What I claim is:
1.` In a journal box, a hinge `lughaving camsurfaces thereon,v a lidsecured to the hinge lug, a spring lever mounted on the lid, having coiled portions comprising piv-l otal points of attachment to the lid, a retaining pin for the coiled portions, and an angledportion comprising means coperating with the cam surfaces on the hinge lug for increasing thel compression of the spring during a portion of the opening or closing movement.
2. In a journal box, a hinge lug having convergent faces, a lid secured to the hinge lug, a spring having a pivotal mounting near its middle portion on the lid, and a wearing shoe secured to the spring and being adapted to co-act alternately with the convergent faces of the hinge lug, and the spring being adapted of itself to press the said wearing shoe inwardly upon one of said faces and thereby hold the lid tightly shut.
Y 3.v In a journal box, a hinge lug having cam surfaces thereon, a lid having a pivotal mounting on said lug, and a flexible lever pivotally mounted upon said lid, one end of said flexible lever reacting outwardly against said lid, the other end ofy said lever reacting outwardly against a cam surface on the hinge lug, and an intermediate por- I tion of said flexible lever reacting inwardly against its point of pivotal attachment to Vthe lid, whereby said lid, when in closed position, is pressed inwardly against the Copies of this patent may be obtained for mouth of the box at its top and bottom edges.
4f.. In a journal box, a hinge lug, a lid pivotally mounted thereon, and a flexible lever pivoted to the lid near the middle of said lid, said flexible lever, when the lid is closed, reacting outwardly at one of its ends against the hinge lug and reacting inwardly at an intermediate portion on its point of pivotal attachment to the lid.
5. ln a journal box, a hinge lug having cam surfaces thereon, a lid pivotally mounted on said box, and a spring pivotally mounted upon said lid, one end of said spring, when the lid is closed, being in engagement with and beingpressed inwardly by a cam surface, such pressure being transmitted through the spring to the pivotal mounting, to hold said lid tightly against the mouth of the box.
