improvements in lifting jacks and more particularly to an automobile jack, the main object of the present invention being the provision of a hoisting jack whichis particularly adapted for raising automobile axles and is so constructed that it can be quickly and readily raised or lowered and securely held when in its raised position.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a hoisting jack wherein the upper bearing face is adjustable with respect to the main portion of the jack, so that the device can be quickly and readily adjustedto accommodate vehicles of various makes and, at the same time, it will be noted that the device can be used for various other purposes.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure l is aside elevation of my improved jack, parts thereof being broken away and illustrated in cross section. Fig. 2 isa front elevation, the handle of the actuating lever being shown in cross section. Fig. 3 is a trans verse sectional View on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a top plan view .of the retaining member for the adjustable support; and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the cam-shaped head illustrating a slightly modified form of the invention.
In carrying out my invention, 1 indicates the base member and extending upwardly from the base member, are the spaced standards 2 integrally connected at the upper end, as shown at 3 to form a guide through which the casing 4: is movable. The casing 4 is cut away upon opposite sides thereof at its lower end to provide spaced arms 5 and rotatably mounted between these arms, is a roller 6, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth. I l As illustrated in Fig, 1, the cam is in its inoperative position and in order to actuate the same to raise the casing 4;, the lever 18 is moved downwardly, the rollers 6 riding over thebearing surface of the cam and raising the casing 4. l/Vhen the lever 18 reaches the end of its downward stroke, the shoulder. 19 will engage with the pivoted latch bar 20 so as to securely hold the cam in its locked position and retain the-casing 4: in its raised position. The latch bar 20 is pivotally connectedbetween the upstanding lugs 21, while the outer end thereof is movable within a yoke 22 and normally retained in a raised position by means of the spring member 23 disposed beneath the latch bar. Thus, when it is desired to release the lever 18 so that the weight upon the upper end of the rack 7 will move the cam to its inoperative position, the outer end of the latch bar 20 is pressed downwardly to disengage the same from the shoulder 19. As the lever 18 reaches the end of its downward stroke, the shoulder 21 opposite the shoulder 19 will engage with the transverse strip 1 1 and prevent further movement of the lever in a downward direction and, when the cam 16 is in an inoperative position as shown in Fig. 1, the lower edge thereof rests upon a supporting hook 525, which is formed integral with one end of the base.
In operating my improved jack, the rack 7 is adjusted according to the object to which the device is to be applied. The key 10 is then engaged between the lugs 8 to retain the rack in its desired position. The jack is then placed beneath. the object to be raised and the lever 18 moved downwardly toward the base 1, whereby the roller 6 will move over the cam surface of the eccentrically mounted cam 16 and raise the casing 4. between the standards 2. As the lever 18 reaches its downward stroke, the shoulder 19 will engage with the latch bar 20 to retain the jack in its raised position. VJ hen it is desired to release the lever 18, the outer end of the latch bar 20 is pressed downwardly against the tension of the spring 23, so as to disenthe same from the shoulder 19, the weight of the object upon the rack 'Z turning the cam and lever to an inoperative position.
It will be noted that the body portion of the cam 16 is provided with a hexagonal and octagonal opening which is adapted to be used, should it be desired to use the device as a wrench for removing axle nuts. The cam may be quiclrlyand readily removed from between the standards 2 by withdrawing the shaft or pivot pin 15. Thus, it will be apparent that the device can be quickly and readily removed from between the standards and used for removing axle nuts or the like.
In Fig. 5, 1 have illustrated a slightly modified form of the invention, wherein the upper face of the cam 16 is provided with a plurality of teeth which are adapted to engage with the gear 6 which is used in place of the roller 6. From this it will be apparent that either the smooth surface of the cam 16 may be used or the cam may be provided with teeth, as illustrated in Fig. 5 and the roller 6 replaced by the gear 6.
My improved hoisting jack, as herein shown and described, is extremely simple in construction, and can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a comparatively low cost.
While 1 have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described this invention, what 1 desire to claim as new and secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A lifting jack including spaced stand ards, a casing. movable vertically between said standards, a movable element carried by the casing, a cam eccentrically mounted between the standards and movably engaging the movable element for raising and lowering the casing, a lever formed integral with the cam, a shoulder formed at the inner end of the lever, a spring actuated bar adapted for en agement by the shoulder when the lever is in a lowered position, said bar being manually operated to release the lever whereby weight upon the upper end of the casing will return the cam to an inopera tive position.
2. A lifting jack including spaced standards, a casing movable vertically between the standards, a supporting member vertically adjustable in the casing, vertically spaced, horizontally disposed teeth formed on opposed faces of the supporting member, a substantially U-shaped key for holding the supporting member in a vertically adjusted position with respect to the casing, the arms of said lrey being engageable between the teeth of the supporting member, and means for vertically adjusting the casing.
