IGNITER.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 29. 1913.

COLUMBIA PLANDORAPH GO" WASHINGTON. D. C-
is my UNITE sans 1 COMPANY, INC OF UPPERSANDUSKY, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. Roorr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Upper Sandusky, in the county of Wyandot and State-of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Igniters', of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in igniters for internal combustion engines and has particular application to anigniter of the flame heated type. p
In carrying out the presentyinvention, it purpose to provide an igniting device which will be carried by the cylinder head and extend into the same in'the path of the incoming live fuel so that the'latter will be ignited to propel'the engine piston.
It is also my purpose to provide an igniter instance, of a'hollow cylindrical body 9 havwhich may be initially heatedin a relatively short time and which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efliciency and durability. j
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a horizontal cylinder stationary engine equipped with an igniter constructed in accordance with the present invention, part of the cylinder being shown in longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional View through the igniter.
In the present instance, I have shown my invention as applied to a two cycle internal combustion engine of the stationary type. I wish it to be understood, however, that my invention in its useful application is not limcommunication between the latter and the crank case of the engine, the piston in its rearward movement compressing the air cylinder.

of the partition 14 is while anoutlet opening 16 is formed in the side wall or the cap of the partition. I
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the the construction, manner of employing my invention will be Vvhen it is desired to initially heat the igniter, a torch or the like atthe opposite side,
accompanying drawing, 7 mode of operation and y 4 The numeral 13 designates a cup-shaped I s v is placed within the cap 13 throughfthe opening 15 and the heat torch pass into the body 16, thereby heating the and flameof such 9 at one side of the partition l laroundto-the other side of such partition and", out through the opening to a relatively high temv .perature, the inner end wall of the body being preferably rounded off as at 17 to facilitate the heating action. In the operation of the engine, air under pressure is delivered to the engine cylinder through the passage 5, when the latter is uncovered by the piston, and the piston in its forward movement compresses such air to a high degree. When the air is thus under compression, the fuel is delivered into the cylinder by the inlet nozzle 7 and impinges upon the body of the igniter, incident to the latter being in the path of the fuel, such fuel being thereby vaporized and commingles freely with the compressed air so as to form a highly explosive mixture which is fired or exploded by the heat from the igniter and the adjacent walls of the cylinder head in addition to the heat of compression. The gases, exploding, drive the piston inwardly on the power stroke, the power being taken from the piston through the agency of a pitman and crank shaft or in some other suitable manner, as is readily apparent to those skilled in the art. When the piston reaches its limit of inward movement, the exhaust port 6 is uncovered so that the burnt gases escape to the atmosphere, while the passage 5 is also uncovered to deliver a fresh charge of air to the cylinder at which time the above operation is repeated.
It will be seen that I have provided an igniter by means of which the oil entering the cylinder is thoroughly vaporized and subsequently mixed with the air under coin- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing 'ginal edge of said outer end of said body,
pression in such manner as to produce a highly explosive gas.
While I have herein shown and described one preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
1 claim:
An igniter for internal combustion engines comprising a cylindrical body projecting into the cylinder of the engine in the path of the gases, a partition arranged within said body centrally thereof and terminating short of the inner end of the body whereby communicating longitudinal chambers are formed, a circumferentially extending flange formed on the outer end of said body, a cup-shaped cap secured to the marfiange and closing the said cap being formed with an inlet openmg at one side of the partition and an outlet opening at the opposite side of such partition.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
