T all whom it may com err?.e I
. Be it known-that I, Jo QUIizK, Jr.,-
ac itizenof theY Unitedl -States,"residing at Jersey City, in thecounty, fof .Hudson and v Stateof New J ersey, have'inventedinew and useful vImprovements in Locks, of which the following is a 'speciication 'f v My invention relates to locks'such as are;7 used to lock a wheel of al vehicle'against:
movement yso as to prevent the use ofthe vehicle b' an unauthorized person.
The ob]ect Vof the invention is to provide a novel and eiicient formV ofv lockadapted to be operated by a key to unlock the saine, and which .may be automatically locked and without the use of the key.
.A further object of the invention is to 'Y provide a member adapted to. be inserted into the lock and means consisting` of a latch adapted to lock said insert member.
A still further object of the invention is to provide such a lock as set forth, which is mounted in a box or the like so that it may f the latch-retracting member.
be readily secured toa wagon or other vehicle.
The preferredV embodiment of my invenftion is hereinafter described and illustrated lin the accompanving drawings.
In these drawings, Figure 1 is a View z artly in elevation and mostly in section. ig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is avdetail of Fig. 4 is a detail ofthe latch, and, Fig. 5 is a detail of Ythe head of the insert bolt member.
Referring vto the drawings, 1 designates a box supporting the parts of theV lock and from which extend suitable ears or the like l i' 2, through which may be passed bolts `such as 3 to secure the box to the wagon body or other support. Into the box 1 is screwed an eye-bolt 4 having attached thereto a chain or the like 5, which'chain 5 is also attached `to an insert eye-bolt 6 having a rod portion.
7 adapted to be inserted in an opening 8 provided inthe box 1. The rod ortion 7 at its outer end, is cut away to crm a cir groove 12into which extends a positioning. or set screw 13 which passes through a portionv of thebox 1. The set screw 13 permits lrotary or turning movement of the member 11- but prevents longitudinal movement thereof. Said `member 11 operates in a' slot A sbeeiacatian @Letters Patent. . nient.' 1.A spiral spring 20 surrounds the rod 17 `and interposed between-the end of thef actuating member v11 and thehead; y2l of the latch. Said head 21offthe latch has .a shoul- 70 Y der 22 adapted to abut against a wall of the box to limit its longitudinal movement and is alsoprovided witha tongue 23 to lenter the circumferential groove 9 of the insert eye-bolt member, and to engage under the headl 10 to normally preventl removal of said insert eye-bolt member. The
latch actuating member 11 isprovided withY a lsuitable groove or grooves 24 adapted to be enga ed by bits of a key 25. p i The evice described and illustrated is principally adapted to be attached to the body of awagon. The wagon when .left alonel by the owner is adapted to be locked by the device, the owner of course, possessing the key-25 to unlock-thewagon'. When the wagon is locked, the eye-bolt member 6 is disengaged from the ,box 1 and is passed through a wheel ofthe -wa on and around`Y the rim of said wheel, and t elrod portion 7 `,is inserted into the slot 8 and pressed against the'tongue 23, whereupon said ton ue yields away from the head 10 until sai head 10- has passed the same, whereupon the spring 20 will return the tongue` to its normal posilocked position so asto free the wheel, the
key 25 is inserted into the openings 24 of the latch actuating member,11, and then turned so as to turn the actuating member 11. By the turning movement the inclined wall 18 operates against the pin 19 and re-' tracts the same from engagement with the groove 9, underthe head 10 of theV insert los" 95 l tion and into the groove 9 and beneath the `head 10. p v
When the eye-bolt 6 is to be removed fromV j of the appended claims.
Having thus described-my invention, what Izclaim is:
I' bore formed therein,
. and extending said actuating member 1. In a device ofthe class described, a box,a latch member, a latch actuating member, said latch actuating member having a a rod formed on said latch member anddisposed Within said bore,
formedtherein, al pin into said cam slot, a bolt for engagement with said latch, and means to box,
ofthe device may .be 'made having "a cam slot formed on said rod* normally hold said latch in engagement -With said bolt.
2. In a device ofl the class described, a a chain fastened to said box, a member insertible into said 'box and adapted to be passed through an object to be locked, said chain connected to said member, a slidable latch, said member having a head to engage said latch, said latch having a rod portion, a pin projecting from said rod portion, a turnable actuating member for said latch provided with a slot having a cam Wall and into Which said pin extends, a spiral spring surrounding said rod portion and bearing against said latch and said turnable member, s`aid turnable member provided With a groove, and a positioning member passing through said box and entering said groove.
