COMBINED AUTOMATIC BURGLAR AND FIRE ALARM SYSTEM.
Application filed March 13, 1913.
ToaZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO Asncssnx, a subject of the King of Denmark, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a Combined Automatic Burglar and Fire Alarm System, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a system employing a central station or watch house which is electrically connected with a plurality of subscribers stations, there being devices located at the subscribers stations, and indicating apparatus atthecentral station whereby a burglar alarm or fire alarm may be autd matically sent in to the central station from any one or more of the subscribers stations.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a single circuit over which both the burglar and fire alarm signalsmay be sent from the subscribers station to the central station.
A further object of the invention is to provide a system whereby. should several subscribers stations attempt to signal the central station at the same time. the signals from the various subscribers stations will be successively received at the central station, and this is accomplished generally by providing means at the subscribers station for repeating the signal indefinitely until the particular subscribers station is released from the central station, whereuponthe next subscriber-s station in order has its signal impressed at the central station and when the second station is released, the signal from the third station is received, etc.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide local signals at the subscribers stations which will be set into action as soon as the subscribers station begins signaling the central station and continue in action as long as the subscribers station continues to signal the central station, viz, until the central station operator releases the subscribers station.
Another object of the invention is to provide a system-for the purposes described in which the operating circuits are of the normally closed type, whereby any interruption of the current will be signalized at the central station.
Another object of the invention is to make provision for the breaking of the main line circuits to the central ofiice through the automatic switches of the subscribers stations Specification of Letters Patent.

in the event that the signal wheels of those stations should stop with the contact brushes on any of the contact plates.
The invention provides a central station in which is located a polarized relay, an audible signal and two distinct visual signals, one for the tire alarm indication and one for the burglar alarm indication. the signals being controlled by the polarized relay; a resetting device is also provided and a main line circuit connects the central station with the subscribers stations, of which latter there may be any desired number connected in the line circuit, and each subscribers station includes a single repeating impulsator or telegraphing device by means of which the stations predetermined identification signal is telegraphed by successive repetitions until received and noted at the central station, and by the central stat-ion operator the subscribers station is released or reset;
two distinct sets of switching devices, one
for the burglar alarm and one for the fire alarm, are located at each su'bscribers station and cooperative connections are provided between the switching devices and the impulsator and include a source of electrical energy for setting the impulsator into action to send out the impulses of the desired polar ity into the main line circuit to actuate the polarized relay at the central station and thereby set the proper signal. Means are also provided under control of the central station operator "for resetting the switching device and in turn stopping the action of the signaling device.
With other objects in view which will hereinafter more clearly appear the invention also resides in those novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully de scribed and then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which 2-- Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of a central station apparatus. Fig. 2 is a diagram matic view of a subscribers station (station A) showing the position of the parts when normal or inactive. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 oi. the apparatus of a second station (station B) showing the position of the parts during the sending of a burglar alarm. Fig. a is a view similar to Figs. 2 and 3 but showing the osition of the parts when senddetail view of one of the switches.
In the drawings like numerals and letters of reference designate like parts in all the figures and in the interest of clearness I shall first describe the construction and then the operation of the fire and burglar alarm units at the respective stations where protection is desired, and also the coiiperatire connections with the same at the central station.
Each subscribers station (the protected premises) includes what I shall hereinafter term the fire and burglar alarm set of apparatus and each of such sets of apparatuses includes two distinct circuit controllers which, for convenience. I shall call the auto matic switches A and B respectively, the automatic-switch A coiiperating with the fire alarm mechanism'and the switch B coiiperating with the burglar alarm mechanism. In addition to the switches A and-B there is provided a signaling device that'includes a spaced contacts 7 and 8 on the respective disks 3 and 4, it being understood that the contacts 7 and 8 are grouped and arranged to make the proper combination of impulses in order to give the required signal of the particular station as will later more clearly appear.
Each of the switches A and B includes a polarized armature 9, that is pivoted at 10, and normally lies in the position indicated in Fig. 2. 'Each of the armatures 9 carries an arc plate that is provided with a series of insulated portions 11, and a set of contact portions 12, 13, 14. 15. Each switch also includes stops 16 and 17 for limiting the movement of the armature and it further includes the operating magnets 18 and 19.
200 and 300 designate the line Wires Which run between the Several stations.
The fire and burglar alarm apparatus of each subscribers station also includes an audible signal 20 for the burglar alarm and an-audible signal21, of a ditl erent type, for the fire alarm, which signals are located at any'desired place on the protected premises, and furthermore each of the burglar and fire alarm apparatuses includes a set o'f circuit closers .22 (of which there may be any nurriber connected in parallel) for the burglar alarm and a suitable number ofi'iicuit closers 23 (any number of whiclrmay bcprovidcd connected in multiple) for the fire alarm. The fire and burglar alarm set or' eachstation ailso includes the main line relays 24 and 25, there being one provided for each line Wire. The relay 24 includes an armature 26 which is pivoted in a .manner to engage either the fixed contacts being understood that the armature is nor-,
mally held by a spring (see Fig. 2) or otherwise in the position shown at Fig. 2.
Either or both of the switches A and B may be constructed so that the magnet 19 may act as a part of a mi y, the core 31 of which coiiperates with the armature 32 that in turn cooperates with the fixed contact 33.
The circuit closers 22 each include a fixed contact 34 and a movable contact 35 which are adapted to be brought into engagement when the signal is to be given. The contact 34 is in electrical connection with one of the windings of the magnets 13 and 19 through a wire 36, that winding of the magnets 18 and 1!) being in turn connected through a wire 37 with the fixed contact38 of the switch B. The fixed contact 34 is also electrically connected with the fixed contact 33 by a connection 39. The armature 32 is electrically connected with the wire 40 that connects with the wire 41 which leads to the movable contact 35 of the circuit closer 22,the wire 40 also connecting to the positive pole of the local battery 42. tery 42 has its negative pole connected by a wire 43 to the fixed contact85 of the switch A. The wire 41 connects electrically with the'fixed contact member 5.
45 and 46 are the main line batteries of the burglar and fire alarm set. The battery 45 has its positive pole connected by a wire 47 with the contact 5 and its negative pole connected by a wire 48 with the contact 30 of relay 24, the Contact 29 of which relay is connected by a wire 49 with the fixed contact 50 of the switch B. The opposed fixed contact 51 of'that switch is connected by a connection 52 with the second winding of the magnets 19 and 18 of switch B, which winding is also connected by a connection 53 to the incoming connection 301 of the line wire 300 on the side of the particular station nearest the central station. The incoming line Wire connection 201 of a station joins electrically With the armature 26 of the relay 24, while the outgoing line wire connection 202 connects wtih the contact 27 of that relay. The incoming line wire 301 of a. station connects with the armature 54 of the relay 25, whilg the outgoing line wire 302 ofthat station connects with the fixed contact 55 of the relay 25.
' The construction of the relays 24 and 25 is substantially identical. The relay 25 is also provided with fixed contacts 56 and 57 that correspond with the contacts 29 and 30 of relay 24. The contact 56 of relay 25 is connected through a connection 58 with the fixed contact 50 of switch A, While the contact 51 of that switch connects through a wire 59 with the second Winding ofthe mag- The batnets 18 and 19 of switch A, which winding is also connected through a connection 60 to the incoming line wire, connection 201.
The fire alarm circuit closers 23 each inbattery 67, and the armature 90f the switch 13 is, electrically connected through a connection 68 with the relay magnet 2-1, which magnet is also connected through a connection 69 with the negative poleof the local battery 67. The stop 17 of switch A is connected by a connection 70 with the winding of the magnet 25, such winding being also connected by connection 71 to the positive pole of the local battery 67. The fixed contact 72 of switch A is connected through 7 3 to the wire 74: which leads down to one terminal of the motor 1, and the fixed contact 72 of switch B is similarly connected through a wire 73 to the wire 74. The contact 44 of the switch B is connected by a wire 77 with'the audible signal 20,- which signal is also connected by a wire 78 to auxiliary contact 79 on the disk or impulse wheel 3. The contact 7 5 of switch B is connected by a wire 80 to the wire 48 which is in electrical connection with the main line battery The c'ontact 81 of switch B connects througha 'wire 82 to the incoming main line connection 301, while the contact 83 of switch B connects through a wire 84: with the set of contacts 7 on the impulse wheel 3. The contact 85 of switch B connects through a wire 86 to the negative pole of the local battery 42. The contact 81 of switch Aconnects through a wire 87 to the incoming line connection 201, while the contact 83 of switch A connects through a wire 88 to the set of contacts 8 on the impulse wheel or disk 4. The contact 75 of switch A connects through a wire 89 to the audible signal 21 which is in turn connected through a wire 90 to the auxiliary contact 91 on the impulse wheel 4, while the contact 44 of switch A connects through a wire 92 to the wire 93 which connects to the negative pole -of the main line battery 46. The wire 92 of the local battery 67.
The switch A and B of the last station includes a pair of contacts 97 and 98 for purpose hereinafter explained.
The central station airing. At the central station there is provided a polarized relay, two distinct visual signals, and an audible signal. one of the visual signals 101 cotiperating with the burglar alarm mechanism and the other 102 coiiperating with the the alarm mechanism. while the adudible signal 103 is operated when either a fire or burglar alarm is signaled. The polarized relay includes the coils 104 and 105 (having two distinct windings) withthe usual pole pieces that cooperate with the balanced armature 106. The armature 106 is provided with lever contacts 107 that are in electrical connection with one pole of the local battery 108, the other pole of which is connected by connection 109 with each of the visual signals 101102. Each of the signals 101 102 is wired up, by wires 110, with separate contacts'111-112 that cooperate with opposed ones of the contacts 107 at times to close the circuits through the visual signals as will later more clearly appear. The central station polarized relay is also provided with fixed contacts 113 that are electrically connected at ll l to the audible signal 103 which signal is in turn connected by a wire 115 to the wire 109 that is itself electrically connected with the negative pole of the local battery 108.
Coiiperative with the fire and burglar alarm mechanism there is provided in the central station, a hand switch 116 of the double tvpe, such switch having a pair of levers 117118 to coiiperate with the fixed contacts 119--120. The lever 118 is connected by a wire 121 to the local winding of the polarized relay coils 104105. This same winding of the relay magnets is also connected by a wire/122 to a local'battery to the contact 120, of the switch 116, whereby there is provided a normally closedcircuit through the balancing coils of the relay.
One terminal of the operating or main line' winding of the coils of the relay magnets is connected by a wire 125 to the line wire connecti on 303, while the other terminal of such winding is connected by wire 126 to the lever 117 of the switch. The contact 119 of switch 116 isr-wired up at 127 with the contact 128 to another single throw hand switch, the lei 129 ofgwhich is connected by a wire 130 that connects to the outgoing line wire 203. i i
131 is a key which is electrically connected at 132 with the wire 180 and is normally in an open circuit position. The contact 133 of the key is connected by a wire 13%,to a main line battery 135, the other pole of which is connected by a wire 136 to .the line, wire connection 303. 137 is a secondkev which is electrically connected at 138 to the outgoing line wire 303 and the fixed contact 139 of which key is connected by wire 140 to a main line battery 141', which is in turn connected by a connection 142 to the wire 130. U 7
Operation of the burglar alarm mechanism-Assume now that one of the burglar alarm contacts 35 of a station (Fig. 3) is moved to close the circuit with contact 34 of that station. The instant this occurs, the local battery 42 will send out a current via wires 40-41 to circuit closer 22, over contacts and 34 and via wire "36 through the'local winding of the magnets 18 and 19 of switch 13, the current passing overwire 37 to contact 38, across contact 15 (the armature and the segmental switch member being in the normal position, see Fig. 2, at the instant of closing) to contact 76, over wire 95, and a part of wire 48 back to the battery 42 via connection 43*, thus establishing a circuit which will energize the magnets 18 and 19 and rock over the armature of switch 13 to the position shown in Fig. 3. At the instant the circuit is closed through the contacts 35 and 34,,the magnets 18 and 19 of switch B are energized thereby moving lever 32 of the relay into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3 to close the local circuit path from wire 40 to wire 39 and thereby maintain the local circuit current through the magnets 18 and 19 until the circuit is broken by the rocking over of the armature 9 of switch B to the position shown in Fig. 3 to interrupt the circuit at the contacts 38 and 76. This takes care of the condition which would exist were the circuit immediately broken again at the contacts 35 and 34, so as to insure a sufiicient energizing of the magnets 18 and 19 to throw the armature 9 over even though the circuit be closed but momentarily at the contacts 32 and 34. If the local circuit current from the battery 42 via contacts 3534 or relay contacts 3233 is not suflicient to throw over the armature 9 to its working place, indicated in Fig. 3, switch B, the main line battery 45 is brought into operation to make a short local circuit before being used for signaling purposes '5. 6. before the path from the battery 45' is opened up to the central station. The momentary circuit afforded by the main line battery only comes into action in the event that the local circuit has not completed the throwing over or rocking of the armature 9 of the switch B to its working position. If the switch B remains in its normal position, a circuit will be established from the main line battery 45 via wire 47, wire 41, across contacts 35'an'd 34 (which are still closed) through the local coils of magnets -18 and 19 and via contacts 38, 15 and 76 and Wires 95 and 48, back to the battery 45. This last current is sufficient to throw the magnet and the arch switchingarrangement over and the use of the main line battery 45 for establishing this local circuit -may or may not be employed, but is illustrated to show that the main line battery may, while otherwise idle, be employed for this purpose. Now assume that the'armature 9 of switch B in Fig. 3 has been thrown over to the full line position shown in that figure. This opens a new path for the local circuit from battery 42 at the same time the first local circuit, above described,-is broken by an insulated portion of the arc member coming in between the contacts 38 and 76. The new circuit now opened up has for its object to start the motor 1 into action. This circuit emanates from the local battery 42 and passes via wire 99, to motor 1, and from thence over wires 74-73 .to contact 72, of switch B, over conductingplate 15, to contact 85, and back to battery 42 via wire 86. This current starts the motor into operation to turn the signaling disks 3 and 4 and remains in operatlon so long as the circuit is closed between contacts 72 and 85. When the armature 9 of switch B was rockedover to the position in Fig. 3,
a circuit was closed between it and the stop 17 thereby permitting a current to flow from battery 67 via wire 66, stop 17, armature 9, wire 68. to magnet of the main line relay 24, and from thence back to battery 67 via wire 69. This circuit is kept, closed until the apparatus" is reset. The coil of the relay 24 having become thus energized, draws over the armature 26 to engage the contacts 29 and 30 as shown in full lines in station E. ,The local circuit through the motor 1 starts it into operation as before described, thereby turning the signaling disks .or wheels 3 and 4 to successively bring the various contacts 7 79 into engagement with the fixed contact 5 and the contacts 891 into engagement with the fixed contact 6. Every time one of the contacts 7 or 79 comes into engagement with the fixed contact '5, a current impulse flows from the battery 45 through brush or fixed contact 5, the contact 7 or 79, as the case may be, on the wheei 3.
Assume that one of the contacts 7 is now in engagement with the brush or fixed contact 5 the current then flows from'battery 45 via wire 47, contacts 5 and 7 to wire 84 and through that. wire to contact 83 of the switch 13. Inasmuch as the circuit is closed between contacts 83 and 81 of. the
switch B (the closing being eiiected via the conducting segment 14) the current passes into wire 82 and flows: into the line wire connection 301 that is in circuit with the line wire 300 on the central station side of the apparatus; the curre t now flows along wire 300 through wir 302-301 of any stations that may be between the sta- "to Wire 48 and return to battery 15.
tion indicated in 3 and central station (the station indicated in Fig. 2 for example); via line wire 300 that is located between the station indicated in Fig. 2 and the central station into Wire 303 of the central station. The current passes through the central station apparatus from Wire 303 to wire 203, via wire 125, relay magnets 10%405, Wire 126, switch contacts 117-119, Wire 127, switch contacts 128129 and Wire 130. From Wire 203 the current passes into line Wire 200 andv from thence through the main line Wire connections 201 202 of the intermediate stations and line 200 to incoming line wire 201 of Fig. 3. Passing through Wire 201 of station E, the current now passes across main line relay armature 26 via contact 30 lVhenever the contact 79 engages the brush 5, the current from the main line battery 45, flowing via Wire l7, contacts 5 and 79, and wire 78, passes through the audible signal (bell) 20 to ring it, thecurrentfiowing from the signal 20 to Wire 77 over contacts at, 13, 75, and'vvire 80, back to wire l8, and battery 15, thus alarming the inmates of the protected premises, (Fig. 3) that the burglar alarm mechanism has been set into operation.
It will be observed that the action of the signaling Wheel 3 is to alternately signal the central station via contact 7 and operate the signal 20 on the protected premises via the contact 79. In other Words, a signal is sent into the central station and then the local signal is operated, and subsequently the central station signal, until the appara-' tus is reset.
Operation of central station cpparatuecm burglar alarm sigmZ.'--The burglar alarm contacts 3531 of some photected premises station (say the station indicated'in Fig. 3)
having been closed and a current sent out Y via main line Wires 300, and return via Wire 200, from the main line battery 45 of that station, as before described, a circuit has been established at the central station.
It should be understood right here that the contact Wheels 3 and 4 of each station have their contacts '7 and 8 differently arranged at each station so as to have each station give a different telegraphic signal. "The current entering the central station over line 300 and its connection 303 at the central station, passes through the operating Winding of the polarized relay, passing through the coils 10 l105 before described.
I desire it understood that While I have indicated the visual signals as incandescent bulbs and the audible signals as bells or buzzers, nevertheless, any standard type of signal that may be desired can be employed in lieu thereof.
12:) is a balancing battery which sends a continuous current through a second or local Winding of the polarized relay via wires 122-124.121 and switch contacts 120 118, for the purpose of balancing the elfect of the normal main line current.
A battery 100 at the last or terminal station is connected by a Wire 1-l2 with.t-he fixed contact 97 of switch A andbywirell3 with fixed contact-97 of switch B. The fixed contacts 98 of switches A. and B are connected to the respective line wire con;-
Resetting of the burglar alarm signaling apparatua-ln order to reset the apparatus which has been sending inthe burglar alarm signal, I have provided, at the central station, a battery 135 and a key 131. As soon as the burglar alarm signal has been received the attendant at the central station temporarily opens the circuit at switch 129, and depresses the key 131. This causes the battery 135 to send out a current via Wire 134, contact 133, switch lever 131, Wire 132,.
into Wire 203, and from thence into line wire 200. The current returning from line Wire 300 via 303, wire 136 to battery 135. This current entering station B passes over Wire 201, armature 26, Wire 49, across con iso' "-51, and making the circuits at contacts 38-76 of switch B.

This current energizes the magnet coils 19 and 1S and rocks over the armature 9 of switch A to the position shown in Fi "4, thereby b'reakiiig the circuits betwe'' V he contacts 38 and '76, and makingvthe' circuits between the contacts 44-' 75, 81-83, 7285, 5051, and 91,7. llp onthrowing. over of the armature 9 of cliA to theposition shown in Fig. 4, a

127, switch members 119, 117, wire 126, op-- erating windings of coils 105-104, over Wire 125, and wire 303, to main line wire Operationof the fire alarm. This causes an operation of the central ,station apparatus as later described. .If any of the intermediate sta- Hons-say station B for example, is sending in a signal to the central station at the time a, signal is formed at the station represented in Fig. 1, as for example ifthe station indi eated in. Fig. '3 is sending in a burglar. alarm, all stations beyond the station 1n-' dicatcd in Fig. 8 will be operatively cut off from the central station during the time that station indicated in Fig. 3iissending in the signal, for example, during the time the circuit is open at the station indicated in Fig. 3. at main line relay 24,-but as soon as the intermediate station apparatus has been reset by the attendant at the central station as hereinbefore described with regard to the station indicated in Fig. 3 the station indicated in 4 will be brought into action and the signal impulsed by the battery -16 will be" indicated at the central station. During the operation of thesignalll1g' disk t dim the contact 91 enga es the brush 6,421 current will be impulsed from the main line battery +10 over brush 6, contact 91, and local wire 90. to the fire alarm signal 21 at the local station afl'ected, and from that signal the current passes via wire 89, contacts 7513i-1, and wires 9293,
back to battery 46, thus operating alternately the local fire alarm signal at the affected station and the indicating apparatus at the central station. 7
Operationof central station; apparatus 01% fire alarm, signal-The fire alarm signal coming into the central station over wirev 200 and out through wire 300 upsets the balance of the central station relay correspondingly and throws the armature over to the position against the pole piece of the magnet section 104 thereby opening the circuits at the right and closing them at the left through contact lcver 107 and contacts 1l:Z-1l3. The closing of the circuits at contacts 11'2-1l3 at the left of the rclaylc- \ors 107 causes the battery 108 to send out a divided current through wires ll0-11+t via contacts Nib-113 to therisual signal .102 and the audible signal 103, the current returning through wires 109 d [15 t th battery 108.
It should he understood that whenever a signal comes into the central station. the attcudant immediately b1'eaks ..tl1c local circuit of battery 123 by opening the contacts 118 and 120 so that the incoming signal may be and enter through the wire 200. This is accomplished by the battery 1 11. Upon closing the key 137 against the contact 139, the battery current flows out through wire 140 over contacts 139, key 137, wire 138, into line Wire 300 via wire 303, and returns through wire 200 to battery 111, via wires 203 and 130. Before depressing the key 137, it should be understood that the circuit through the relay magnets of the central station is broken by opening the switch 129. The current, flowing out, through line wire 300 from the central station battery 1&1, enters the station through Wire 301, passing to armature 51 of relay 25,'and overthis armature via wire 58, contacts 50, 15, 51, wire 59, through magnets 18 and 19 (in a direction reverse to the local'current), via wire 60 to line wire connection 201 and back to central station, over line wire 200. The energizing of the magnets 18 and 19 by this reverse current restores the automatic switch armature A (Fig. l) to its initial or normal position a (see for instance the position in Fig. 3).
The restoration of the switch A to its normal position breaks the circuits between and 44, between 83 and 81, between 72 and 85, between 50 and 51, and also between 9 and 17, thus releasing the relay 25 and permitting the spring to draw the armature back against the contact 55. and disconnect contacts 56 and as well asbreakingthe motor circuit and the circuit to .the local alarm. This restores the station to its normal position, it being understood of course, that in the meantime'the circuit at the circuit closer 23 has been opened. The opening of the circuit at the circuit closers .22 and 23 is done either automatically after a given period of time or manually as may spective stations, asignaling device at each subscribers station for sending out telegraphic signals into the main line circuit, electromagnetically operated automatic switching devices at each subscribers station for bringing said signaling device into action, there being at least two automatic switches at each subscribers station, burglar alarm circuit closers cooperating with one of said switches, and fire alarm circuit closers cooperating with the other of said switches, main line sources at energy atthe subscribers stations. cooperative connections between said switches and said sources of energy for bringing said sources of energy into operative relation with said signaling devices to send out the signal impulses into the main line circuit upon closing the burglar or fire alarm' circuit closers at a station, and signal receiving apparatus at the central station and means separate from said circuit closure and cooperating with said automatic switch devices for maintaining their operative circuit closed a definite time regardless of the time of duration of the closing ofsaid circuit closers.
