Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1915.
Application filed April 7, 1915. Serial N 0. 19,842.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, REGINALD HUGH SPENCER BACON and JOHN HERBERT MAN- sELL, subjects of the King of Great Britain, both residing at The Coventry Ordnance lVorks, Coventry, in the county of Warwick, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fuses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for pre Y venting premature ignition of the time or percussion arrangements in shell fuses from affecting the detonating charge carried by the fuse.
Our invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a fuse. Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional detail views.
a is the body of the fuse containing time rings 7) and a percussion pellet c of ordinary construction. Into the body screws a strong steel gain (Z into which gain is screwed a diaphragm e. In front of this is a charge f of high explosive such as trinitrophenylmethylnitramin or tetryl as it is more conveniently called, in the middle of which are pellets g of powder. In front of this is a wad h which is kept in place by the screw plug 21 through which is formed a passage to enable the flash from the percussion or time arrangements to reach the pellets g. In front of this again is another plug containing a centrifugal safety bolt 70 in front of which is a copper cup Z which normally closes the passage. The rim of this cup is flared outward and fits a seating m on or near the mouth of the passage n and the body of the cup, the exterior of which is cylindrical, lies within the passage. The interior of the cup is conical so that the bottom is the thickest part and the thickness of the walls decreases toward the top. In front of the cup is a thin brass disk 0 which lies in the enlarged mouth of the passage. Should either the time or percussion arrangements be prematurely ignited the passage n is completely blocked by the cup which is prevented from moving rearward along the passage by the bolt 70. When, however, the shell is fired centrifugal action causes the bolt to move out of the passage, subsequently the pressure set up by the time or percussion arrangements deforms the cup and forces it into the large part of the passage in which the bolt is normally situated and the flash is then enabled to pass to the charge f. Re hind the diaphragm e is a larger charge of high explosive such as tetryl, the front portion being formed of loose explosive 79 while the rear portion is composed of compressed explosive q, the two being separated by a wad r and held in place by a plug 8.
lVhat we claim is 1. In a shell fuse the combination of a centrifugal bolt adapted normally to close a passage leading to a charge of explosive and a cup having a flared rim fitting a seating in the wall of the passage.
2. In a shell fuse the combination of a centrifugal bolt adapted normally to close a passage leading to a charge of explosive and a copper cup having a flared rim fitting a seating in the wall of the passage.
3. In a shell fuse the combination of a centrifugal bolt adapted normally to close a passage leading to a charge of explosive and a cup of which the bottom is the strongest portion and which has a flared rim fitting a seating in the wall of the passage.
