Be it known' that l, HOWARD BRUCE, a citi aen Aotl the United States, residing,T at Baltimore, in'xthe State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Manufacturing Coal-Gas, of which the following is a specilication. h f
This invention relates to improvements 1n 4gas retorts land has for its `Ibject to provide improvedY means for adjustably sustaining the stand pipes and for adjustably .bracing the' mouth pieces of the retorts withl respect to eachf other whereby to provide for the relative shifting of the parts by expansion and contraction.
AWith the above, and other objects in View, the invention isA illustrated in the accompanying drawingwherein,- Figure 1,7shows a series of vertically-arranged retorts in front elcvation,`.ea'ch -vertical row ot retorts being provided with a stand-.pipe 'constructed and arranged laccording to ythe invention. Fig. 2, shows a. vertical series `ot retorts and the stand-pipe connected therewith. partly in vertical section and part in side elevation.- Fig. 3, shows an enlarged vertical sectional detailthrough the adjust-ing devices for the standpipes and also the improved 'braces Afor the retort inouthpicces ythe section being taken on. the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4, illustrates a liorizontal cross-sectional detail on an enlarged scale of the sustaining means for the upper ends ot the standpipes,-the section being taken on` the line 4 1 of Fig. 1. Referring to the drawings, thevnumerals, 9, designates a yvertical series of retorts, set in the usual or any prefcrred'manner and having mouthpieccs, 10, which project from the retort proper. Each mouthpiece has a door, 11, which may be opened for charging and discharging purposes in the usual manner, and also, each'mouthpiecehas a side passage, 12, for connection with a standpipe,
presently to be explained.
The mouthpieces are arranged in vertical rows,-one directly above another and each mouthpiece, with the exception of the uppermost one, has an upper socket, 13, and a lower socket 14, in vertical alinement. A stem, 15, has its upper end seated in the Speccation of Letters Patent.

It will therefore be seen that one standpipe has as 'many side openings or passages as there are retort mouthpieces in a vertical row to oneside of it, and that all the retorts of a vertical row have a separate and independent connection with thev same standpipe,-tl1e connection from one retort to the standpipe being entirely 4separate'and independent -of the connection to the same standpipe from any other retort in the same verf tical row.
Each standpipe depends below the lowermost mouthpiece of the vertical row of retorts and has its lower end dipping into a tar seal pot, 23', which has an outlet, 24C, that leads to a tar cistern. V
Between the lowermost retort and the tar seal pot, 23, each standpipe has an exterior circumferential Hange -or collar, 25. In the present instance these flanges or collars are located above ythe horizontal beam, 18, so that bearing brackets, 26, may be seated on said'beam and sustain adjustable'posts, 27,

From the 'foregoing explanation it will be seen that the straight vertical portion, 21, of cach standpipe is adjustably sustainednear its lower lend and that each retort mouthpiece connected with a standpipe is also adjustably sustained so that the expansion and contraction of the standpipe and its connections with the retorts may be v cared for through said adjustments; By
providing a slip joint at the upper, end of the straight portion ofthe 4standpipe, the unin or section., 30, may be rigidly lsecured without harm to the joint when' the stand pipe does expand or contract.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat# ent is 1. In an apparatus for the manufacture of coal gas the combination with a retort, of
a stand pipe; a seal for one end of the stand'v Y pipe and means for adjusting the stand pipe in a longitudinal direction.
2. In an apparatus for the manufacture of coal gas the combination with a plurality of retorts, of stand pipes; ,connections'between the lretorts and stand' pipes andadjustable means for sustaining the stand pipes.
3.- In an apparatus for the manufacture of coal gas the combination with a retort mouth piece of a stand pipe having connections with the retort mouth piece; means for adjustably sustaining the mouth piece and means for adjustably sustaining the stand Plpe- 4f. In an apparatus for the manufacture of coal gas-thecombination with a plurality of l retorts each `having a mouthpiece and arranged in vertical rows, vo f adjustable means interposed between" the several mouthpieces" 6. -In an apparatus for the manufacture of coal gas the combination'with a retort mouth piece; of a stand pipe havingv connection with ythe retort mouth piece ;'means for verticallyadjusting the mouth piece with respect to the stand pipe; a hydraulic main; connection between the hydraulic' main land 'stand pipe',-`said connections having a slip joint with the standpli'pe and means for adjustably' sustaining t' e stand pipe.
