Application ledpril 1,5, 1911. Serial No. 621,359.
To all whomitmay cmicern:` d Be it knownthat l, HUNTER SMITH, a citizen of the Unitedl States, residing .at Berkeley, in the county of .Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Super.
heaters, of which the following `is a specification. j
' This invention relates' to steam superheaters 'for boilers and has for its object to providean improved apparatus of kind A tained within a limitedspace.
Referring to the accompanying drawings zF1gure 1 1s an end view of a return tubular boiler vand a super-heater constructed in accordance with this invention', partly..
broken .away and in section with theboiler setting in cross section. Fig. 2 is a -side' view in elevation of the super-heater, partly in vertical section. Fig. 3 is a side view in elevation of the super-heater and-the rear of a return tubular boiler with a portion of the boiler setting in longitudinal and Vertical section.v Fig. 4 is a plan View of the top 'of one side of the 4super-heater showing. it as partly broken away and in honizontal section. Fig. 5 is a plan view in horizontal sec' tion of one of the columns of the superheater. Fig. 6 is a detail viewin ve'rtical 'section of a portion of one of the columns of the superheater. h
In the accompanying drawings :-1 indicates the rear end of a boiler, and 2'indicates the boiler setting in cross section. The super-heater is constructed withV pairs Vof columns 3 at each side thereof, each pair of columns having a double header@ at the top and a double header 5 vat the bottom. Each of the columns consists of a boiler'l tube 6 expanded atfeach end in theupperand l 'the ends of a boiler tube. 6 'inclosed by a caslng composed of rings lower heads inthe usual manner of securing The boiler tube 7, preferably of cast meil, whichvrest on one another and serve to protect the thin boiler tube 6 rom'rapid destruction by fire,
vfurther has for its objectv only4 parts of the column exposed to the direct action of the flames, the upper headers and the rest of the superstructure hereinafter set forth being outside of the rear arch while the lower headers and connection are below the pavement of the boiler setting.
j Located Within each boiler `tube 6 is a vertical shaft 8 formed in sections 9, each of said sections having a section of a spiral.
flange 10, and connected together k,by means.
of a square verticalprojection 11 lat the top of each section, which fits into the lsquare socket 12 in the bottom of the section abovel the sa'me. The edges of the spiral bear against the inner sides of the tube. 6. The spiral shaft is detachably held in. place by means of a spider lat each end which has a curved flange 14 Which lits against the expanded end of the tube (i and the rod 15- eXtends through the sections 9 and holds the spiders"y 13 and the shaft in place by means ol2 nuts 16 onthe ends-)of the rod 15.
The headers are provided`` with -hand holes closed by a plate 17 having a stem 17. and a spider 18 secured -'to the stem 17 by soV means of a nut 19. A tight jointis formed between the plate 17 and the header by4 Fach meansv of a bronze metal' gasket 18V. of the double vheaders is provided with a lateral projecting lianged,pipef20, the top headers 4L having thedlanged pipes 20 conf neted to/apipe jloint 21 which is formed with an elbow steam inlet pipe 22 and .an elbow outletpip'e 23, said inlet pipes being,
separated by partitions 24. The bottom headers 5 are connected together by a horizontal pipe 25 located beneath the pavement 26 of the boiler settingmbhevpipe 25. having vits flanged ends connected to the flanged pipes 20 projecting from the bot- .95
tom headers 5', and supported by brackets 27 .on the bottom of the boiler setting.
28 is a connection on the pipe 25 for the attachment of a drip or steam trap.
One advantage of the construction of each column lies in the fact that in adapting the super-heater to boilers of any) kind the col` `umn may bemade of any desired length by increasing or` decreasing the number of sections thereot and the jointed ponnection of the sections 9 of the shaft preserve the alinement of the spiral flange.
The circulation through the super-heater is through the steam inlet 22, and the pipe 2O to the double-header. The flow now div`vides and passes down through each tube 6 in the spiral path aorded by the flange 10.
From the lower left hand double-header 5 steam passes horizontally through the pipe 25 to the right double header 5, and again divides and passes upward through -'the tubes 6 lto the upper double header'l` and from'thence through the pipe 20 and out ofl the outlet 23.
By means of the construction and arrangement of the double columns and douend to end Jef said sha t, said shaft and spiral flange being formed in sections.
2'. In a steam super-heater for boilers, a column consisting of a boiler tube, a header secured to each nd of said tube, a casing inclosing said tube and formed of a column of detachable metal rings and located between said headers, a shaft having a spiral'lange extending from end toendof said tube and formed of detachable sections, a rod eX- tending through said shaft, and a spider on each Vend of said rodfdetaehably Secured thereto, and bearing against the end of the tube.
3. A steam super-heater for boilers, consist'ing of a pair of -columns 'at each side thereof, each of said pairs of columns having a double header at the top and bottom, and each of said columns consisting of `a boiler tube, a casing inelosing said tube and lformed oir' built up metal rings, kand a shaft in said boiler tubehaving a spiral flange,
. the lower double headers being connected by a pipe and one of the upper double 'headers being provided with an inlet pipe and the other with an outlet pipe.
In testimony whereof I aitix my signature in presence of two'witnesses.
