To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES G. HARDIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at orcester, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a-new and useful Improvement in Registering Devices for Paper-Feeding Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings forming a part of the same.
Theobject of my present invention is to provide a device for accomplishing the sidewise or lateral registration of a sheet as the same is moved forward by a paper feeding mechanism. I accomplish this object by the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described, the novel features bein pointed out in the annexed claims.

Referring to Fig. 1, 1, 1, represent the sides of a machine joined together by tie rods, 2, 3, 4, and 5, forming a framework upon which the operative parts of the feeding and registering mechanisms are mounted. Power is applied to a driving shaft 6 which carries a pinion 7 engaging a gear 8 on a cam shaft 9. From the pinion 7 rotary motion is imparted to a pinion 10 through the intermediate pinions 11 and 12, represented by broken lines, Fig. 6, said intermediate pinions turning loosely upon I The pinion 10 is attached to a shaft 13 which is provided with a long roll 14 on which are mounted tapes 15 supported at their opposite ends upon a long roll 16 carried upon the shaft 17, journaled in the framework at the rear end of the'machine. Motion is imparted to the upper or supporting sur faces of the tapes 15 in the direction of the arrow 18. Beneath the central section of the tapes 15 is a shaft 19 provided with a long roll 20 bearing against the under surface of the tapes15. Pivoted on tie rods 21 and 22 are levers 23 carrying in their free ends rolls 24 which are held by gravity upon the upper surfaces of the tapes 15, thereby securing frictional contact between the tapes 15 and the sheet to be fed. EX- tending lengthwise the machine and parallel with the tapes 15 are thin steel plates 25, 25, in position to support the edges of the sheet as it is moved by the tapes. The rear ends of the plates 25 are provided with arms 26 which are pivotally held upon the tie rod 21 and the forward ends of the plates rest upon the long roll 14 carried upon the shaft 13.
The plates 25 are adjustable on their supports according to the width of the sheet being fed. They support the opposite edges of the sheet and prevent them from drooping between the forwarding tapes and they also facilitate the sidewise movement of the sheet when operated upon by the registering mechanism hereinafter described.
As the sheets are projected by over a table 27 against end stops or gages, not shown, which check the forward movement of the sheet. When the sheets have been brought to a state of rest they are operated upon by a. registering mechanism embodying my present invention, by which each sheet is moved sidewise into a predetermined position. Capable of a longitudinal sliding movement in the framework of fed forward they are the machine is a shaft 28, in one end of which is held a rocking pin' 29 having its ends slotted to receive the tip furcated plate 31, attached to a rocking lever 32. The rocking a stud 33 held in a bracket 34 projecting from the side of the machine. The rocking lever 32 carries a cam roll 35 engaged by a O which is held upon the cam shaft 9, by which a reciprocating movement is imparted to the shaft 28.
Collars 38, 38, adjustably attached to the reciprocating shaft 28 by the clamping bolts 39, are provided on one side with lugs 40 to receive adjusting screws 41 which are held in lugs 42 on arms 43 which inclose the sliding shaft 28, and are capable of being clamped thereon by To the lower end of the arms 43 are attached plates 45 and to the under side of the plates 45 are attached one edge of the thin plates 46 leaving an open space or recess between the plates 45 and 46 for the edge of the sheet to enter.
Mounted in the plate 45 is a plunger 47 to the lower end of which is attached a clamping plate 48, normally held against the plate 46 by a blade spring 49 bearing on the upper end of the plunger 47. Attached to the plunger 47 is a collar 50 beneath which extends a blade 51 attached to a rocking shaft 52. The rocking shaft 52 is provided with a radial arm53 which enters the the movement of the tapes 15 s 30 of a b1- lever 32 swings upon roove 36 on the periphery of a cam 37 the clamping bolts 44.
bifurcated arm 54 of a bell crank lever pivoted on the shaft 6. The other arm 55 of the bell crank lever carries a cam roll 56, which is held in contact with the peplate 48 off the plate 46 to allow the edge of the paper sheet to pass beneath the clamping plate.
The registering devices carried upon the reciprocating shaft 28 are two in number A and B, Figs. 1 and 2, adapted to engage opposite margins of a sheet, but otherwise duplicates of each other. The collars 38 are adjusted on the shaft 28 and the finer adjustment of the registering devices is secure by means of the adjusting screws41 and nuts 59. Between collars 60 and 61 on the shaft 28 and the framework of the machine are the compression springs 62 and 63. The registering device A is adapted to register one edge of the sheet as the latter is fed to a printing press, and the device B is designed to register the same edge after the sheet has been turned over to print the opposite side, only one of the registering devices being used at a time.
In the present instance the registering device A is placed in operative position and the collar 60 is adjusted on' the shaft 28 to place the spring 62 under tension in order to hold the camroll 35 against one side of the groove 36 and take any lost motion. The collar 61 is adjusted on the shaft 23 to release the spring 63 from tension, as represented in Fig. 2, and the registering device B may be released from the shaft 28 or moved into an inoperative position thereon. In this position of the registering devices A and B the sheet is registered by that edge which is engaged by the registering device A as follows: When the sheet has been brought to a state of rest, with its edge in the recess between the plates 45 and 46 the shaft 28 is moved toward the left, Fig. 2, until the edge of the sheet is brought against the end wall 64 of the recess, Fig. 3, and beneath the clamping plate 48. A slight sidewise movement is imparted to the sheet on the table 27 in order to insure the contact of its edge with the end wall 64 of the recess. During this sliding movement of the sheet on the table 27 it 1s moved beneath a bent finger 65, Fig. 8, which at this period in the operation of the machine rests by gravity upon the table 27 in the position shown at 65*, Fig. 8. The finger 65 is attached to the end of a screw threaded rod 66 adjustably held in a spindle 67, capable of a rocking movement limited screw 67 8 held in a bracket 67 in one direction by a set The link 68 amass? is slotted to inclose the shaft 6, and the upper end of the link is pivoted to a lever 69. The lever 69 is pivoted on the tie rod 3 and carries in its free end a cam roll 70 Which is held by gravity upon the periphery of a cam 71 on the cam shaft 9.
In Fig. 8 the finger is represented as raised above the surface of the table 27, but during the sidewise movement of the sheet, as it is pushed by the end wall 64 of the registering device, the bent finger 65 rests upon the table 27 and imparts sutficient frictional resistance to the movement of the sheet to insure the contact of its edge against the end wall 64. At the termination of the'sidewise movement of the sheet, as pushed by the registering device A, the clamping plate 48 is dropped upon the margin of the sheet and the finger 65 is lifted. The movement of the shaft 28 is then reversed by the cam 37, bringing the end wall 64 of the registering device back to its normal position, which is the desired position for the registration of the sheet. When thus registered, the clamping plate 48 is raised, releasing the sheet. In order to prevent'the margin of the sheet from being caught between the end wall 64 and the clamping plate 48, "the latter is provided With two lugs 72, 72, Figs. 3 and 4, which project through mortises in the end wall 64.
When the sheets which have been successively registered as above described, are to be printed upon the opposite side, it is necessary that the side registration of the sheet be applied to the same edge as during the first impression. The registering device A is then loosened from the shaft 28, or moved into an inoperative position, the collar 60 is moved to release the tension of the spring 62 and the registering device B is adjustably attached to the shaft 28 and the collar 61 moved to compress the spring 63, when the sheets are again fed through the feeding mechanism and registered by the device B, in the same manner as already described.
Supported on the tie rod-'5 are collars 73, to the under side of which guard plates 74 are attached extending across the table 27 and at a slight distance above it in order to prevent the sheet from beinglifted from the table. The collars 73 are frictionally held' from longitudinal movement on the tie rod 5, and the plate 45 is provided with a bifurcated projecting arm 75 which incloses the tie rod 5 and arranged to contact with a collar 73 and slide it along the tie rod 5, in case the collar should happen to come within the path of the arm, thereby moving the guard plates 74 out of the path of the registel-ing device.
The cam 37 is provided with a second groove 76, which is the reverse of the groove 36, and when the registering device 13 is with an edge of said sheet, means for moving said wall against said edge to impart a sidewise movement to the sheet, means carried by said gage for gripping said edge of the sheet, means for preventing the entrance of said edge between said wall and said gripping means, and means for reversing the sidewise movement of said sheet to bring saidedge into a predetermined position.

A registering device for paper feeding mechanism, comprising means for supporting the sheet in extended position, a gage having a Wall for engagement with an edge of said sheet, means for moving said Wall against said edge to impart a sidewise movement to the sheet, means carried by said gage for gripping said edge of the sheet, said gripping means extending through said wall to prevent the entrance of said edge between said wall and said' gripping means, and means for reversing the movement of said gage to bring said edge into a predetermined position.
3. Aregistering device for a paper feeding mechanism, comprising means for supporting the sheet. in an extended position, means for pushing the sheet sidewise, means for applying a frictional resistance to the sidewise movement of the paper, means for engaging the edge of the sheet, and means for moving the sheet engaging means in a direction opposite to the first named sidewise movement to bring the edge of the sheet into a predetermined position.

A registering device for paper feeding mechanism, comprising means for supporting the sheet in an extended position, a gage for an edge of said sheet, means for moving said gage to impart a sidewise movement to the sheet, yielding means interposed in the path of said sheet during such movement for insuring the contact of said edge with said gage, and means for thereafter gripping said sheet in said gage. 5.
