HENRY Cr. SMITH, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR'OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO ELIJ AH D. CASTELOW, OE SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 114,484, dated May 2, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-PIPE THIMBLES.
The Schedule refei-re. to in these Letters Patent and mak-ing part of the name.
To all whom 'it 'may conce/rn:
Beit known that I, HENRY G. SMITH, of Meriden, in the 'county of New Haven and State of Oonnecti cut, have invented a new and improved Adjustable Stove-Pipe Thimble; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention consists in providing the thimble for I use Amy invention7 I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A represents a thimble constructed of any Aproper lnon-combustible material, and of sufficient diameter to receive the larger sizes of stove-pipes, which is provided with a collar, a, having a flange, a,fas shown.
B represents a covering-plate, which fits snugly within the flange a', and forms with it and the collar a a chamber for holding the adjustable mechanism. This consists of a suitable number of jaws, C C, which slide between permanent guides o o cast upon the face of the collar a, as shown. These jaws are provided with curved edges, adapted to grasp the pipe, and are p operated by means of eccentric iianges b b projecting from the inner face of the covering-plate B.
Each dangc b rests in a slot ol c1, formed in the projection o2 upon each jaw C.
' Suitable stops b' are provided upon the coveringplate B to prevent its flanges from being accidentally moved ont of the slots.
The covering-plate is secured in place by any proper means that will permit it t0 revolve. I preferably employ thumb-screws d,upon threaded studs rising from the-ange a', as shown.
It is essential that the inner face of the screw-nut should bear rm'ly against' the covering-plate when screwed to place, in order that the latter may be securely held from revolving.
The operation is as follows;
The thimble is secured in the chimney in any proper manner. The pipe is placed in position in the thimble, and the covering-plate being revolved in the proper direction by means of the 'studs c e the jaws are caused to slide forward by means of the eccentric flanges and gripe the pipe. ing back by means of the set-screws which are screwed down to hold it.
It will thus be seen that any size of pipe within the limits ofthe thimble may be employed.
One of the special advantages of this4 construction is that the pipe is securely held, and thus prevented from being accidentally thrown down from any cause.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- 1. A stove-pipe thimble provided with adjustable jaws, actuated by eccentric flanges, substantially as described.
2. rIlhe device described, consisting of the thimble A, with collar a and flange a', covering-plate B, with eccentric anges, vjaws C C, with slots ol and thumb-screws (l, the parts being combined and arranged as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this-21st day of November, 1870. p
HENRY G. SMITH.
Witnesses:
GEO. W. SMITH, WILBUR F. DAVIS.
The plateis then secured from tnrn`
