Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 29, 1915.
Application filed June 20, 1914. Serial No. 846,293.

Be it known that I, WALTER GREEN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of the city of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gangways, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description'.
This invention relates to improvements in gangways or loading platforms, and the object is to provide a gangway which may be used to bridge the gap between two cars or between the car and platform during loading.
A further object is to provide a gangway which will be held against longitudinal movement or creeping which frequently results in serious accidents.
A still further object is to provide on a gangway holding means which may be adjusted to any variation of the space to be bridged.
To accomplish the above outlined objects, a gangway is provided consisting of the usual platform reduced in thickness at the ends, and metal sliod to resist wear. On the underside of the platform, guides are provided containing slidable members which may be adjusted in the guides to make up with the guides the space to be bridged.

Referring more particularly to the dra-wings, 6 and 7 designate the oors of two cars or of a car and platform or the like, which are spaced apart by a gap, designated 8.
The gangway consists of a platform 9 reduced in thickness at the ends and provided with metal shoes 10 in the usual manner. On the underside of the gangway, a pair of longitudinally disposed guide channels 11 are secured having one end closed by a member 12. The flanges of these guides are provided with inwardly projecting ribs 13 which hold the longitudinal slidable members 14C against escape from the guides.
Near the open ends of the guides, the lower rib 13 is provided with a plurality of regularly spaced notches 15, in which a plurality of pins 16 carried by the slides 14 are engageable. These pins 16 are mounted toward the free ends of the slides 14:, and in order that the slides may be lifted to disengage the pins from the notches, the slides are slightly tapered from their inner to their outer ends, as shown by the space 17. For convenience of operation, each slide is provided With a handle 18. lThe outer end of each slide is provided with a protective shoe 19 secured to the upper edge thereof and bent down over the end and projecting a short distance below the lower edge, as clearly shown in the drawings. These shoes protect the ends of the slides from wear, and in addition, the downwardly projecting portion 20 increases the bearing surface, so that when the gangway is used to connect objects of different heights, the inclination or oscillation of the gangway as the load runs off ulfilll not have the effect of disengaging the s 1 e.
The operation of the device is very simple. The gangway is placed across the gap between the two objects 6 and 7, and the closed ends of the guides 11 brought into abutting relation with one of said objects. The slides are lifted in the guides to disengage the pins 16 from the notches 15 and are then adjusted in the guides until the shod ends of the slides engage the other object, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 andk 5. wWhen the slides are released, they drop by gravity and the engagement of the pins 16 in the notches will hold the slides against longitudinal m0vement, so that the gangway will not creep.
The gangway may be put to use or removed instantly, and is not in any wav attached to either object.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isr- 1. In a gangway, the combination with a platform of a pair of longitudinal guide members secured to the lower side of said platform, slides movably mounted in said guides, locking means connecting the slides and guides, abutment faces of increased depth on the outer ends of the slides, said slides being tapered from the inner to the outer ends to permit vertical unlocking movement.
2. In a device of the character described, a platform, a pair of channel shaped guides secured to the lower side thereof, inwardly projecting ribs on the flanges of said guides,
