Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 29, 1915.
Application filed June 26, 1913. Serial No. 775,935.
To all whom it mar concern Be it known that 1, PAUL MAIWURM, a citizen of Germany, residlng at Shreve, 1n
the county of Wayne and State of Ohio,
have invented a new and useful Punching and Forming Device for Kettles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to punching and forming machines for use in the manufacthe rim of the kettle; and, third, to provide in connection therewith cooperative means for forming the spout of such kettle simultaneously with the punching of said rivet holes. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a machine embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line XY of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a part of my machine on the line A-B of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a detailed view of one of the camwheels, detached; Fig. 5 is a partial view of a part of said wheel showing the relation of the two cams thereon; Fig. 6, a detailed view of one of my punch-bars, detached; and Fig. 7, a detailed view of my spoutforming device extended from the top of Fig. 3.
Similar letters and figures of reference indicate like parts. I
The table plate A, its legs and standards 13 B, and boxings b b, which may be of any desired pattern, constitute the framework of my machine. In the boxings b b is supported a rotatable shaft 0 carrying two camwheels D E, one opposite the other, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Said shaft extends outwardly in one direction and is connected by a suitable clutch to power, which, being no part of the present invention, need not be further shown or described. Said shaft is mountedin such a manner asto bring the periphery of each cam-wheel slightly above the surface of the table, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. A third cam-wheel G is mounted in like manner on a shaft F, operable in a slmilar boxing b at right angles with the shaft C, by beveled gear wheels 9 10, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The table is provided with three wings or lobes a a a, two thereof being in line with the center of the table, and the other wing or lobe occupying a position at right angles with said line, as shown in Fig. 1. Upon each of the center wings is securely mounted a punch-bar I, which is slidable horizontally in line with the shaft C within a channel boxing 21, being actuated in one direction by the cams 1, which stand near the margin of each camwheel, and, in the opposite direction, by the two reciprocating slide bars 22 and 23, respectively. Said slide bars reciprocate horizontally beside each other in bearings below the table A by intermittent engagement with the cams 2, which, for the purpose, are located intermediate the periphery and the center of each cam-wheel, and timed to follow the cams 1 in rotation thereon. To accomplish reciprocal movement of the punchbars I, each of the two which are alined opposite each other as aforesaid is put into operative engagement with one of said reciprocating slide bars by a connecting arm 15 at one end thereof, the other end being provided with an anti-friction roller 3 adapted to intermittently engage said lower cam 2 as aforesaid. The several punch-bars are actuated in a forward direction in all respects alike, but the said intermediate punch-bar is reciprocally returned to normal position by means of a. lever 17 which is pivoted to a support extending from the table frame, and to an ear 19 on its related punch-bar, as shown in Fig. 3. The lower end of said lever is also provided with an antifriction roller 20 adapted to bear against said lower cam 2, whereby, at each revolution of said cam wheel, said punchbar is also reciprocated in both directions. Its simultaneous operation with the other punch-bars is accomplished by the proper setting of said intermediate cam-wheel Gr upon its shaft F. r A circular barrier 11, of a size suited to fit snugly within the rim of the kettle to be punched, and provided with die openings therethrough adapted to register with the several punches 19 p 79, respec tively, ,is securely mounted upon the table center, as shown in Fig. 1. Said barrier is open on one side thereof directly opposite said intermediate punch-bar to permit the slide-bar H alined therewith to pass through said opening, said slide bar H being slidable in a boxing 21, and in operative engagement with said punch-bar by a catch 24-, as shown in Figs. 3 and 7. The head 16 of said slide bar is shaped and adapted to impinge against the intervening rim of said kettle by the action of said punch-bar and to reciprocate therewith. I accomplish: the longitudinal adjustment of said punch-bars by making. the same in two parts and regulating the. distance between them by a threaded bolt, having right and left threads,
operable between said parts by a nut 8, as shown. in Fig. 6. r
The operation of the machine is such that when a kettle J is placed in inverted position upon said table with its rim about said barrier 11, by the one revolution of said cam-wheels respectively the outer cams thereof are brought into operative engagement with said punclrbars I and the antifri'ction rollers 4: simultaneously, thereby actuating the punch bars I and forcing the punches 79 against the intervening kettle'rim J and into the said dies in the barrier, whereby said rim is perforated at points opposite on one diameter thereof, and also at an intermediate point at right angles with said diameter opposite the center thereof"; by the same movement, and simultaneously therewith, said slide bar H, by its engagement with said intermediate punch-bar, is forced against the inner surface of said kettle rim by its'head 16, which is shaped for the purpose, thereby forming a spout for said kettle at an exactly intermediate point between said opposite punch-bars, and in direct'alinement with said intermediateperforation; to aid in said formation an outer barrier 14: is securedon said table, shaped to receive the impression of said head as it presses said spout into its proper form thereon, at said opening 12,. asshown in Figs. 1 and 7. I'm? mediatel-y' upon: the completion of said:
aun'chin 'and formin o oration the several 1 z:
' cams 2 2 2 are: brought into engagement with said slide bars 22 and 23" and H, re-' spectively, thereby withdrawing all said punch barsand'said" spout forming bar from said kettle and to their respective original positions, simultaneously, prepared for' an- If desired, any one or' other operation. more: of said punch-bars, or said spoutformmg bar may bemade 1nop'erat1ve,leaving the others operative as aforesaid.
By thevmeans stated the oppositersides of.
the kettle may be suitably punched, as for bail ears, and, at an intermediate point, a spout may be formed therein, simultaneously, at every revolution of said camwheels, and such process may be repeated with great exactness, perfection and rapidity, and at a minimum expense; I do not limit myself'to' mere matter of form, and the several parts may be modified within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;.
