BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent. Iai gnbQd J une 29, 1915.
Application filed October 13, 1913. Serial No. 794,796.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMns D. GARVEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Brushes, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in brushes, more particularly to that form known as the fountain type of brushes.
The object of my invention is to provide a fountain brush of simple design and efficient operation.
-In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side view of a fountain brush embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail showing the lower portion of the handle thereof} Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail showing in longitudinal section the container and the valve in connection therewith; also showing the brush proper and the parts immediately connected therewith.
It will be apparent from the drawings and the description hereinafter contained that my invention may be applied to a number of different uses. I have chosen in this application to illustrate my invention as em bodied in a scrubbing brush.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 6 represents a brush, which may be of any suitable type having attached to the upper surface 7 thereof a socket or ferrule 8 set at asuitable angle and secured to the brush by any suitable means, preferably by the screws 9, 9. A handle 10 of suitable length is mounted in said socket 8, and secured therein by any suitable means preferably the rivets 11, 11. A sleeve 12 adapted to steady the container hereinafter described is slidably mounted upon said handle. The lower end 13 of the sleeve 12 abuts against the flanged portion of the ferrule 8, and in the preferable construction thereof is adapted to surround the ferrule 8 hereinbefore described. The upper end of the sleeve 12 is provided with a suitable stop member or portion, preferably shown in the nature of the flange 14C. The said flange is adapted to support the container 15 and prevent its downward movement upon said handle, in preferable construction the said flange being secured to the container to afford a rigid connection for the same. The said container 15 is a hollow receptacle of suitable size, and preferably cylindrical in shape, having a passageway 16 therethrough for the passage of the handle 10, the said passage-way in preferable construction being oblique to the longitudinal axis of the receptacle, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The saidreceptacle is liquidtight, and is provided with an opening 18 having a suitable screw cap 19 for the closure thereof for the purpose of permitting the filling of the container with the fluid to be used in connection with the device. On its under face the container is provided with an opening 20 leading to a valve chamber 21, the said opening in preferable construction being formed through a pipe 22 inserted in the receptacle near its lower end, and provided with an outwardly extending flange 23 soldered to the exterior face of the container 15. At its outer end the said pipe is suitably threaded, as indicated at the numeral 24, to enter the threads 25 in the barrel or cylinder 26. The barrel or cylinder 26 at its upper end 27 receives the spring 28, preferably of the coiled type, the said spring being seated at its upper end against the cap 29.
In preferable construction the interior face of the cap is provided with leather washers 30 and a metal washer 31 to afford a perfect setting for the spring, and to also afford a tight closure at this point. At its lower end the spring 28 is seated against the plug valve or member 32, in preferable construction the upper face of said plugvalve being provided with metal and leather washers similar to those employed in connection with the cap. The plug-valve 32 is provided with a piston rod 33 extending through a perforation 34: in the cap 29. The barrel or cylinder 26 is provided, below the pipe 22 with a valve seat 35 for the valve 32. In preferable construction the said seat 35, which is formed on the upper face of the member 36, is adapted to be screwed into the lower end of the barrel or cylinder 26, the said member 36 being preferably provided with a round portion or orifice 37 to receive the hose 38 which is provided with any suitable means preferably a clamp 39 to securely engage the same thereon.
The piston rod 33 is provided at its upper end with a perforation 40 to receive a split of rivets, screws or other similar attaching means. At its upper end the rod 42 is provided with a handle 46, preferably having a knob 47 thereon, the said rod and handle being adapted to move the piston rod 33 and therebyoperate the valve hereinbefore described. The hose 38 leads from the discharge end of member 36 to the brush 6, the said hose-in preferable construction passing through the perforation 48 in the top of said brush to distribute material conveyed from the container to the bristles 49 of said brush.
From the foregoing description the operation of my device will be easily understood. The container may be filled, preferably from a faucet or by means of a funnel or any other suitable means, with Water or any desired fluid to be used in scrubbing. The operator places the brush upon the floor or other surface in the usual manner, and by pulling the rod 42 the valve member 32 is withdrawn from its seat, per- -mitting the fluid in the container to flow by gravity through the discharge end of cylinder 26, member 36 and the hose or tube 38 connected thereto, and be distributed to the bristles of the brush and employed as a scrubbing fluid in connection with the surface upon which the brush is being used. hen suflicient fluid has been used for immediate purposes the operator releases the rod, whereupon the spring forces the valve member into its closed position on the valve seat, discontinuing the flow of the fluid until more may be desired, or the flow may be made continuous. The flow may be made continuous from a small quantity to a large quantity, as for instance two andone-half gallons or up to the full capacity of the container, as the operator may desire.
I claim l. a fountain brush, the combination of a brush, a handle, a container mounted upon said handle, a tube connecting the container and the said brush, with a sleeve mounted on said handle and arranged intermediate of the container and brush whereby the relative position of the container to the brush is maintained.
2. In a fountain brush, the combination of, a brush, a handle, a container mounted upon said handle, a tube connecting the container and the said brush, with a sleeve mounted on said handle intermediate of the container and the brush, said sleeve being provided with a flange, whereby the sleeve is rigidly secured to the container and the latter supported in proper position.
3. A fountain brush, comprising a brush, the back whereof is provided with an opening therethrough, a ferrule obliquely secured to said brush, a handle secured in said fer.- rule, a liquid container obliquely mounted on said handle and providedwith an outlet adjacent the lowermost portion thereof, a valve-casing connected to said outlet and located outside of said container, a springcontrolled valve arranged in said casing so as to normally close off. the outlet in said container, means extending lengthwise of the handle whereby said valve may be moved so as to open said outlet, a conduit extending from said'casing to the opening in the brush-back whereby the contents of said container will be discharged onto the bristles of the brush when said valve is operated, means frictionally secured to the handle and above said container whereby the latter is held against longitudinal movement on the handle, and a spacing-member slidably mounted on said ferrule whereby the relative. position of said container to the brush is maintained.
