ttniitt fine JAMES H. GARNER, OF PONTIAC, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 114,431, dated May 2-, 1871; antcdated April 25, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOILERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES H. GARNER, of Pontiac, in the county'of' Livingston and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Wash-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description-of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawing making a partof this specification, and to the letters and figures'of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is my boiler in plan View;
Figure 2 is aside elevation; and
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical section of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in theconstruction and arrangement of a Washing device to be used in any boiler; and
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents a rim of suitable height made to fitin the bottom of a wash-boiler, and having slats B B running both lengthwise and crosswise on top the same, upon which slats the clothes to be washed are laid.
Under the slats B B, extending within the entire rim A, is a base or bottom, 0. Along one side of the rim A this bottom is near the upper edge and nearly horizontal it then inclines downward to near the lower edge on the other side of the rim.
In this lower edge, below the bottom 0, are openings w a, with a guard, b, fixed on the inside of the run.
At each end of the rim A, at the lower end, is another opcning, a, with a guard, I), on the inside.
These openings allow the water to pass in under the bottom 0, while the guards prevent the escape of the steam through the said openings.
Above the bottom 0, in the same side of the rim A as the openings a, are other openings, at d, which carry 0d the water from the upper surface of the bottom.
On the horizontal portion of the bottom C-that is, along the rear side of the rim Ais a conductor, D, hav-v ing a wide opening at the bottom, as shown in fig. 3, and contracting upward. This conductor is in oblong shape, being about half the length of the boiler, and extends upward to near the top thereof. At its upper end it is curved inward and perforated with a number of holes 0 e, as shown.
The boiler being on the stove the steam and hot suds will pass up the conductor D and pass with great force through the holes 6 c on top of the clothes, go through the same, down the inclined bottom 0, and through the openings (1 a back in under said bottom.
Having thus fully described my invention,
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-' ters Patent, is-- 1. The combination of the rim A with openings 0;
a and cl (1 and the guards b i), the slats B B, and inclined bottom 0, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the base A B U with its openings to (Z and guards b, and the oblong conductor 1) with its openings e c, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribedmy name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. GARNER.
