This in\lntion relates to iniprovenienteI in tools and has partieular application to an illuminated tool whivh will he found especially useful hy inafhiniets. motor-iste. ehaufteurs and the like.
ln Carrying! ont the iii-wout invention. it is my purpoee to provide a tool which will eninodiv a handle and a lamp Carried h r the handle and adapted to throw rays of light onto the object engaged hir the tool so as to taeilitate the nee of the latter. thereh;7 illuminating the ohieet in the rieinit)v ot the Work.
lt is also my purpose to provide a tool ot the class described Whieh -will be found espeeiallr useful hv machinists. motoriete and the like and wherehv the Work ma;v he illuminated so that the desired reoaire` majv he made in a minimum time and with the leat possihle effort or exertion on the part of the neer.
A further ohierrt ot mi' invention iQ. to provide a handle earrinff a lamp and onpahle of application to toolrqA of `various ti'nee.
With the ahore and other ohlieets in View. the invention eonsisltsr in the Construction. eornhination and arrangement of parte hereinafter .Cet JForth in and falling 'within the .Grone or" the Pluim.
ln the aeeomuanlving dranine'e: Firfure l is a view in eide elevation oi a tool eonlStriuted in accordant-e with the present in rention. Fig. 2 ie a longitudinal Sectional view through the tool. Fig. f3 is a Cross eeetional View therethrough. Fig. 4 is a View in end elevation of the tool. Fig. 5 is e. view in side elevation IQhoning the handle. connected With another form ot tool. Fig. 6 is a similar View taken at right anglee to Fig. 5. Fig. 7 ia a View in end elevation thereof. Fig. Q is a cross eeetional View through the Seme.
Referring now to the drawings in detail. l designates a handle Whieh. in the present instaure. ie tuhular in eroes eeetion and oi" anyv desired or neeeeearfr length. Thie, handle ie oreferahlr eonstrueted ot metal and is equipped interiorly. adiaeent. to one end. with an annulns 2 engaging the Wall of Specification of Letters Patent.

the handle and held against movement. If desired. this anuulus may be, formed integral with the inner Wall of the handle, although a split ring will answer the purpose euuall)v as well. The outer Wall of the handle at the said end thereof is threaded exterior-ly ast at il and is similarly threaded at the opposite end thereot1 and threaded onto the lastmeutioned end ot the hndle and rloaing the latter is a cap 4. Hthin the tuhular handle l is a self-contained electrio lamp of any Suitable construction. such lamp einhmlying a hulh and a case carrying a dr;v eell and having a socket or receptacle at one end thereof electrically7 connected with the dr;v eell and receiving the plug of the lamp hulh. This lamp is interposed hetrveen the annulus 2 and the cover 4 and the reiieetortorthelamp bears against the annulus eo that when the lamp is illuminated the rays ot light will he projected out of the tuhular handle by Way of the open end thereotin a line axial Twith the axis of the handle. Located upon the exterior of the tnhular handle l, adjacent. to the open end thereof ie a suiteh 5 eonneeted in circuit with the lamp and controlling the connection hetween the lauro and the hattet-y. Then the switch is elosed. the lamp is illurninated. while when the switch is open the lamp is extinguished. a; will he readilyv understood.
ln the embodiment of my' invention select ed ior illuetratire purpoeee. l have illus trated the handle as detachahlv aseoeinted with Screw driver and a Standard Wrench. lr the preeent inetanee. the Soren* drirer eomorises a interiorljv threaded socket 6 haringJ one edge formed. at diametrieallu opposite points. with arms 7. '7 converging toward each other at the outer ends thereo"x and terminating: in a socket R Within which is mounted one end of a shank 9 haring the opposite extremity thereof pointed as at 10 to enter the Slot in the head of the Same. A set Soren ll, is threaded through one Wall of the socket 9 and hinds againeft the adjacent end o? the lQhanlt 9 to hold the latter to the soelret (i. Tn oraetiee. the .Cioelret 6 is threatled onto the threaded onen end oi the tuhulur handle l and the Aheult 9 provieeto outn'ardlv irom the handle in a line coaxial therewith. while when the switch 5 is closed the ray@ ot light from the lamp nass through the ermee@ hetuoen the arme 7 and around the shank 9 and illuminate the work so that the user of the deviee may readily and con; rehiently inSert the pointed end of the Screw driver into the Slot in the Screw.
'l`he wrench -onnector herein shown coinprises a socket member l? threaded interiorly and formed adjacent to one edge with a laterally projectin r lug: 112 equipped with an outwardly projecting arm 1.3 formed with a socket 1+ and provided with set screws I6 in the eide wall of the socket. This' shank hrojeets outwardly from the socket. member l2 in a plane parallel with the longitudinal axis ot' the latter and the handle of the wrench is inerted in the socket l-l and the Set screws tightened whereby the wrench is securely held in place as shown in Figs. 3 and ti. When it is desired to apply the wrench to the handle. the socket member 12 is threaded onto the open end ot' the handle and the switch closed whcreb)v the rays of light from the lamp project outwardly from the open end ot' the casing and in a plane parallel with the, Soclieted faire of the shank thereby illuminating the work.
From the foregoing desvription taken in Connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and manner ot' eniploying my invention will he readily apparent. It will be Seen that I have provided an illuminated handle which may he connected with any number ot' tools so as to facilitate the use of the latter.
Copies of this patent mayV be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing` the "Commissioner of Patents,
Washington, D. G."
While I have herein shown and described one preferred form of my invention by Way of illustration, I wish it t0 be understood 3J that I do not limit or confine myself to the Y precise detail@ of construction herein described and delineated. as modification andV Variation may be made within the Scope 0f the claim without departing from the Spirit of the invention. i
I claim:
The combination with a tubular handle,' of an annulus at one end of said handle, a' Y selt-contained electric lamp within Saidv 45 handle having the reflector thereof bearing against. said annulus and adapted to project the rays of light out 0f the adjacent end 0f the handle in a line coaxial therewith, a l#toelietmember surrounding,lr the last-men- 'wf tioned end of said handle, an arm secured to said socket` member and extending ont' wardly therefrom and having a socket-5 formed therein. a tool Within said last socket. and means for effecting a. detachable eonneetion between said arm and tool whereby the tool may he removed and replaced.' e
lu testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnees.
