DRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 22, 1915.
Application led December 17, 1914. Serial No. 877,710.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WiLBUR R. FITCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belmont, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Drier, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in driers for clothes, towels and the like; and the object of my invention is to provide such an article of manufacture which is inexpensive in construction, durable and which will occupy a minimum of space.
In the drawings forming a part of this specicatiomFigure 1 is a side elevation of my drier as it may appear in use; Fig. 2 is a side view of my device shown as not in use; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the top plate with the hanger arms extended; Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the upper plate held in its horizontal position upon the lower plate; Fig. 5 is a sectional View of the top and bottom plates and the locking means; and Fig. 6 is a front elevation showing my invention when not in use.
Referring to the drawings in which like reference numerals designate like parts in the several drawings: 1 is the wall to which the guide-rod 2, which is bent at each end, is rigidly held by the brackets 3 3.
- 4 represents the sliding sleeve which carries the member or extension-head 5 at its upper portion and the foot 6 at its lower end. The extension-head 5, which slides with the sliding sleeve 4 over the guide-rod 2, is formed with the upwardly extending lug 7 at its front portion and the trunnions 8-8 at its rear. These trunnions 8 8 are adapted to engage the grooves 11-11 formed in the approximately semi-circular plate 9 and this said plate has a downwardly extending lug 10 integral therewith. The holes 12 are bored through the plate 9 and follow the contour thereof and are for the reception of the pins 14 by which the movable arms 13 are held in place. The foot 6, which is also adapted to slide along with the sliding sleeve, has mounted thereon the locking means which consists of a flat plate l5 bent to form a handle at one end thereof and has a slightly oblong slot 17 formed near its opposite end, which slot engages the guide-rod when in locked position and slides thereon when the drier is being raised or lowered. The lugs 18 on the extension-head 5 are for the purpose of preventing the plate 9 from being slipped rearwardly from the trunnions 8.
From the foregoing description of the drawings the operation of my invention is easily understood but in detail is as follows: Presuming that the drier is in its folded position and it is desired to put it in use, the plate 9 which carries the drying arms is raised until its downwardly extending lug is above the lug on the lower plate and next pushed backwardly until the front of the lug in the upper plate engages the back of the lug in the lower plate; it will thus be seen that the upper plate will be held against forward movement, and backward movement is prevented by the lugs on the trunnions. When the articles to be dried have been hung on the arms it is only necessary to grasp the handle carried by the foot and push it up to any desired point and then release the handle and lock it there by the release of the handle. The lowering operation is, of course, done by reversing the respective operations above set forth. It will also be understood that as many of the arms as may be desired may be occupied and that they may be swung in any direction in a horizontal plane when in use and all of the arms are secured to the plate bythe pivot pins 14 when in its elevated or lowered position. It is also to be noted that the plate 9 cannot be removed from the extensionhead 5 by accident or design. There will, therefore, be no loose parts to adjust or become lost.
What I claim is:
1. In a drier, a guide-rod, a sliding sleeve maintained by the guide rod, an extension head on said sliding sleeve, an upwardly extending lug formed at the front portion of said extension head, trunnions formed at the sides of said extension head, a lug on the top part of each of said trunnions, a plate adapted to swing on said trunnions, a downwardly 'extending lug formed at the front part of said plate, and shoulders formed at the rear portion of said plate and adapted to Contact with said lugs.
2. In a drier, the combination of a guiderod, a sliding sleeve, an extension head carried by the top portion of said sliding sleeve, trunnions formed at each side of said extension-head, upwardly projecting lugs formed on the arms having the trunnions, an upwardly extending lug formed at the front portion of said extension-head, a plate having grooves formed therein adapted to engage said trunnions at their respective ends, a downwardly extending lug formed at the front portion of said plate, and shoulders formed at the rear portion of said plate for engagement with the upwardly projecting lugs on the armshaving the trunnions.
3. In a drier, the combination of a guide rod with a sliding sleeve, an extension-head carried by the upper part of said sliding sleeve, an upwardly extending lug formed at the front portion of said extension-head, trunnions formed on said extension-head, lugs carried by the respective trunnions, an
arm-carrying plate movably mounted on said trunnions at their respective outer ends by grooves formed in said plate, a downwardly extending lug formed at the front portion of said plate, and shoulders formed at the rear part of said plate, whereby said plate is adapted to be held from lateral, forward or backward movement.
4. In a drier, the combination of a guiderod with a sliding sleeve, an extension-head carried at the upper portion of said sliding sleeve, an upwardly extending lug formed at the front portion of said extension-head, trunnions formed at the sides of said extension head and back of said lug, lugs carried on the upper parts of the respective trunnions, an arm-carrying plate having holes therein, pins adapted to fasten arms to said plate, a downwardly extending lug formed at the front portion of said plate, shoulders formed on said plate back of said downwardly extending lug, and said pla-te being formed with grooves into' which fit the ends of the respective trunnions.
In testimony whereof I aHix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
