HAMMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed .1 uly 6, 1914. Serial No. 849,214.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN GUY and JOHN PLATT HUYoKn, both of the town of Cobourg, in the county of Northumberland, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammers, of which the following is the specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in hammers and the object of the invention is to devise a hammer which will prevent the stinging effect produced on the hand of the user when the blow is struck and the jar and strain on the hand of the user or on the handle of the hammer, which will insure of an even blow being struck, in which the handle may be easily replaced, and which can be readily changed so as to strike a solid blow when desired, and it consists essentially of a hammer head provided with a longitudinal slot extending from the back to the front of the head and a cross slot leading into the longitudinal slot from each side of the hammer head, a hammer handle fitting between the sides of the longitudinal slot of the head and free of the top and bottom ends of the slot, recesses formed in the hammer handle, cushioning blocks fitting into the recesses and bearing toward the ends of the longitudinal slot of the hammer head, metallic shields fitting over the blocks and a cross pin extending through the hammer handle and secured therein and projecting at its ends into the cross slot formed in the sides of the hammer head.
Figure 1, is a perspective view of a hammer constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal section through the head. Fig. 3, is a cross section through the head. Fig. 4, is a perspective view of the hammer handle, cushioning block, retaining pin and metallic shield, separated apart.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
A is a hammer head of any suitable form provided with a longitudinal slot A and cross slots A and A leading into the longitudiinal slot from the sides of the hammer hea B is a hammer handle provided with an end forging B such end being rectangular in form and of the same horizontal width as the longitudinal slot A but of less vertical width.
B are recesses formed in the upper and lower face of a hammer handle.
B are resilient blocks fitting within the recesses and provided with covering metallic, clips B. When the blocks B are in serted in the recess B and the clips B placed on the top of the blocks the handle B is inserted in the slot A so that the clips B bear against the ends of the slot.
D is a retaining pin which is driven into the orifice 13 extending through the hammer handle so as to project at its ends into the slots A and A as shown particularly in Fig. 3.
From this description it will be readily seen that when a blow is struck the head gives a cushioning blow thereby taking away all jar and strain on the hand of the user and the handle of the hammer preventing the stinging sensation in the hand of the user which is produced when an uneven blow is struck. It will also be seen that in working iron or steel when an unyielding blow is struck the cushion will yield so as to allow of the hammer head to find its own seat and thereby produce an even surface on the work. If desired solid blocks may be substituted for the resilient blocks when it is desired to strike an unyielding blow.
What we claim as our invention is:
1. The combination withthe hammer head provided with the usual handle eye and elongated cross slots extending longitudinally of the hammer head and through each side of the hammer head into the eye, of a hammer handle extending into the eye of the head and fitting between the sides of such eye and free of the ends thereof, cushioning means interposed between the hammer handle and the ends of the eye, and a pin projecting from the hammer handle at each side into the cross slots and capable of moving longitudinally thereof in proportion to the yielding of the cushioning means when the hammer blow is struck, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with a hammer head having the usual eye and hammer handle handle from the main eye, as and for the fitting therein and free of the ends thereof purpose specified.
and provided With recesses opposing the JOHN GUY ends of the eye, resilient cushions fitting into such recesses and metallic clips extending JOHN PLATT HUYGKE' over the exposed ends of the cushion and Witnesses: bearing against the ends of the eye, and ELLA IRENE CARRUTIIERS, means for preventing the Withdrawal of the MYRIENE LILLY NILEs.
