To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN B. OELKERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamping-Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has reference, generally, to improvements in clamping supports for embroidery frames, such as the fabric-holding hoops used in hand-embroidering; and, the present invention relates, more particularly, to a novel clamping support, which may be clamped in position at the edge of a table, and is provided with a rotatably supported element and a pivoted element, with which the fabric-holding frame or hoop may be used, for bringing the latter into various positions in front of the operator to simplify and facilitate the embroidering operations.

The invention has for its principal object to provide a novel and simply-constructed clamping support of the general character hereinafter set forth, which is readily manipulated and serves the purpose of bringing the embroidery frame and the fabric held therein into various positions in front of the operator for simplifying and facilitating the embroidering operations.

Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearlv understood from the follow ing detailed description of the present in vention.

With the various objects of the present invention in View, the invention consists, primarily, in the novel clamping support hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be described in detail in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to, and which form an essential part of the said specification.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clamping support embodying the principles of the present invention, the same being shown in its clamped position upon the edge of a table, or the like; Fig. 2 is a top view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the clamping support. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section of the support, said section being taken on line 44 in Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow as, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of the support, said section being taken on line 55 in said Fig. 1.

Similar characters of reference are employed in the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-numeral 1 indicates a vertically disposed main post, made of wood or other suitable material which is longitudinally perforated, so as to provide a bore 2 extending from the bottom to the top of said post, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.

Extending at right angles to and laterally from said post are a pair of clamping members, as 3 and 4, also of wood or other suitable material, said members 3 and 4 being suitably braced by means of a screw 5 and nut 6, or in any other suitable manner. Ro-

tatably connected with one of said members, as 3, is a clamping screw 7 which is provided with a handle-portion, as 8, for operating the same, and by means of which the members 3 and 4 can be brought into firm clamped relation with the edge of a table, as 9, or the like. Rotatably mounted upon the upper end of the said main post 1, but suitably separated therefrom by a metal washer 10, is an articulating member 11, of wood or other suitable material, provided in its upper end with a slot or saw-cut, as 12, and the ears 13 thus provided being curved, to provide a bore 14. The said member 11 is also longitudinally perforated,'as at 15, a long stem or pintle 16, which is much longer than the said vertically disposed main post 1, so as to project for some dis tance above said post 1, extending through the

2 and 15 of the main post 1 and the member 11, and through the washer 10. Upon its upper end, the said stem or pintle 16 has a suitable head 17 and upon its ber 11, the sides of the head 17 are made fiat, as at 21, so as to engage the inner surfaces of the ears 13, in the manner shown 1n Figs. 1 and 5 of the drawings. To prevent the thumb-nut 20 from becoming dislodged from the screw-threaded end 18 of the stem or pintle 16, when turned too far, the said end 18 is also provided with an enlargement or riveted-over part, as 22. The referencecharacter 23 indicates another articulating member, also made of wood, or other suitable material, said member being provided at its lower end with a perforated lug, as 241, which is arranged between the perforated ears 13 of the member 11 and is pivotally mounted upon a pintle 25, arranged in the registering perforations of said ears 13 and the lug 24. The said pintle 25, as

shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, has a head 26 upon one end, and upon its screw-thread ed end-portion 27 is a washer 28 and a thumb-nut 29, for rigidly securing the said member 23 in any one of its pivotally moved positions with relation to the member 11, when the nut 29 is tightened, and as will be clearly evident from an inspection of said Fig. 1. The upper end-portion of said member 24: is provided with a slot or saw-cut, as 30, to provide a pair of clamping members 31, and to provide for greater and positive clamping action of said members 31, a narrow saw-cut 32 extends downwardly from the slot 30 into the body of the said member 23. Positive binding action of the said clamping members 31 is produced by a-stem 33 formed upon its one end with a head 34, and having upon its screw-threaded portion 35 a washer 36' and a thumb-nut 37.

In practice, the embroidery frame is arranged between the clamping members 31, and by tightening the nut 36, the said frame can be'brought into its positively clamped relation with the clamping support forming the subject-matter of the present invention. When the embroidery frame has thus been clamped in position, and the clamping support has been clamped upon the edge of a table, or the like, it will be clearly evident, that by the manipulation of either or both of the thumb-

20 and 29, the member 11 may be rotated upon the stem or pintle 16, about said pin as an axis, while the pivoted member 23 may be moved angularly nto any number of planes at right angles to the vertical plane passing through the central axis of the stem or pin 16 and of the member 11 mounted upon said stem or pin, so that the operator may readily bring the embroidery frame and the fabric stretched therein, in any desired position in front of the person, whereby the work of embroidering is greatly facilitated.

I claim l. A clamping support comprising a vertically disposed main supporting post, and a pair of clamping members extending laterally from said post, said clamping members being provided with means for clamping the same to the edge of a table or the like, said post being provided with a bore extending from the bottom to the top of said main post, a stem in said bore, said stem being longer than said main post so as to project above the top of the post, a longitudinally perforated member rotatably mounted upon said projecting end-portion of the stem, so as to be rotatable with relation to said post, means upon said stem for securing said post and member in rigid relation to each other, a clamping member pivotally connected with said rotatable member, and means for seeming and mem bers in rigid relation to each other.

2. A clamping support comprising a vertically disposed main supporting post and a pair of clamping members extending laterally from said post, said clamping members being provided with means for clamping the same to the edge of a table or the like, said post being provided with a bore extending from the bottom to the top of said main post, a stem in said bore, said stem being longer than said main post so as to project above the top of the post, a longitudinally perforated member rotatably mounted upon said projecting end-portion of the stem, so as to be rotatable with relation to said post, means upon said stem for securing said post and member in rigid relation to each other, perforated ears upon said rotatable member, a pintle in said perforated ears, a clamping member having a perforated lug extending between said ears and pivotally mounted upon said pintle, and a binding nut upon said pintle for securing said members in rigid relation to each other.

3. A clamping support comprising a vertically disposed main supporting post, and a pair of clamping-members extending laterally from said post, said clamping-members being provided with means for clamping the same to the edge of a table or the like, said post being provided with a bore extending from the bottom to the top of said main post, a stem in said bore, said stem being longer than said main post so as to project above the top of said post, a longitudinally perforated member rotatably mounted upon said projecting end portion of the stem, so as to be rotatable with relation to said post, a washer upon said stem above said post, said member being rotatably supported upon said washer means upon said stem for securing said post and member in rigid relation to each other, a clamping member pivotally connected with said rotatable member, means for securing said members in rigid relation to each other, a pair of clamping lugs upon the upper end of said clamping member, said clamping member being provided with a saw-cut and a perforation extending across said saw-cut, a thumb-screw in said perforation, and a thumb-nut upon said screw for bringing said clamping lugs in binding relation with an object placed between them.

A clamping support comprising a vertically disposed main supporting post, and a pair of clamping-members extending laterally from said post, said clamping-members being provided with means for clam ing the same to the edge of a table or the like, said post being provided with a bore extending from the bottom to the top of said main post, a stem in said bore, said stem being longer than said main post so as to project above the top of said post, a longitudinally perforated member rotatably mounted upon said projecting end portion of the stem, so as to be rotatable with relation to said post, a washer upon said stem above said post, said member being rotatably supported upon said washer, means upon said stem for securing said post and member in rigid relation to each other, perforated ears upon said rotatable member, a pintle in said perforated ears, a clamping member having a perforated lug extending between said ears and pivotally mounted upon said pintle, a binding nut upon said (topics of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the pintle for securing said members in rigid relation to each other, a pair of clamping lugs upon the upper end of said clamping member, said clamping member being provided with a saw-cut and a perforation extending across said saw-cut, a thumb-screw in said perforation, and a thumb-nut upon said screw for bringing said clamping lugs in binding relation with an object placed between them.

5. A clamping support comprising a vertically disposed main supporting post, and a pair of clampingmembers extending laterally from said post, said clamping-members being provided with means for clamping the same to the edge of a table or the like, said post being provided with a bore extending from the bottom to the top of said main post, a stem in said bore, said stem being longer than said main post so as to project above the top of said post, a longitudinally perforated member rotatably mounted upon said projecting end portion of the stem, so as to be rotatable with relation to said post, perforated ears upon said rotatable member, a head upon said stem having flat surface-portions located between said ears to prevent turning of the rotatable member upon said stem, means upon said stem for securing said post and member in rigid relation to each other, and a clamping member pivotally connected with the ears of said rotatable member.
