Application filed. January 4, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD D. VARNUM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crude- Oil Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to oil burners in which oil and water are mixed for use as a fuel, more particularly crude oil or distillate and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a burner which provides the proper quantity of air to the different parts so that said burner will not carbonize,
second, to provide a burner plate which will not readily burn out, third, to provide a burner which is adjustable for different sized boilers or heating plants, fourth, to provide a burner of this class in which the fuel feed and air provides equal distribution, fifth, to provide a burner of this class which will burn either distillate or crude oil mixed with water and in which distillate may be used for starting the fire and then crude oil used thereafter.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter my'invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this specification, in which:

Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The burner plate 1, oil feed cone 2, oil feed pipe 3, hood 4, water feed pipe 5, air supply pipe 6, fuel tank 7, distillate oil tank 8, valve 9 and valve 10 constitute the principal parts of my burner.
The air supply pipe 6 is preferably an ordinary pipe of the proper size to allow the proper quantity of air through the burner. It is provided with a plurality of perforations 6 adapted to allow a small quantity of the air to pass out beneath the burner plate 1 which has a tendency to keep said burner plate 1 from overheating and thus burning out, and also provides a slight Specification of Letters Patent.

draft around the outer edge of the plate 1 to prevent carbonizing and clogging. On this air supply pipe 6 is revolubly mounted an annular shaped damper 6 which is provided with perforations 6 conforming to the hole 6 in the pipe 6. This damper 6 is supported on the pipe 6 by means of lugs 6 and when turned is adapted to open and close the draft through the perforations 6 and to regulate the same. On this air supply pipe 6, on the top end, is mounted said burner plate 1 which is an annular plate and is provided with a hole 1 in its center and around said hole with an upwardly extending bead 1'. It is also provided on its outer edge with an upwardly extending bead 1 adapted to prevent the oil from running over the outer edge of the plate 1 and it is also provided with inwardly extending lugs 1 adapted to support the pipe 3 centrally in the hole I Immediately above this plate 1 is the oil feed cone 2 mounted upon the pipe 3 by means of threads 3 which allows its being moved up and down relatively to the plate 1. It is preferably provided with grooves in its upper surface extending from the top to the bottom thereof. The water feed pipe 5 forming a support for the burner extends up through the air supply pipe 6 inside of the oil feed pipe 3 and is provided with a plurality of perforations 5 in its 4a on its top end to which is attached the hood 4. The oil feed pipe 3 is fitted tightly around the water supply pipe 5 slightly below its top end and said oil feed pipe is provided with perforations 3 near its top end adapted for the exit of the oil therethrough and onto the upper surface of the cone 2. To the oil supply pipe 3 is connected the crude oil tank 7 and distillate oil tank 8, both of which are separated from said pipe 3 by means of valves, the one which I have numbered 9 and other 10. In starting the fire the valve 9 is closed and the water is shut off. The valve 10 is opened which allows the distillate to run to the burner through the perforations 3 and down over the cone 2 over the plate 1 where it is ignited by the use of a match. However, when the plate 1 has become sufliciently heated to provide proper combustion the water through the pipe 5 is then turned on, or if it is desired to burn crude oil the valve 10 is closed and the valve 9 is opened and the water turned on in proper proportions with the oil.
It will be here noted that the air supply to the burner is through the air supply pipe 6 the larger quantity of the air going up through the hole l in the central portion of the plate 1 and spreading in all directions and the oil and water flows down over the cone 2, from the perforations 3 and 5 dropping in a circle on the plate 1 adjacent the outer edge of the cone 2, that there is provided a draft through the perforation 6 and through the hole 1 in the center portion of the plate 1.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement but desire to include in the purview of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
It is obvious that with thisconstruction there is provided a crude oil burner in which the draft may be regulated as desired; that the space between the feed cone and the burner plate may be decreased or enlarged as desired for difierent sized fires by adjusting the cone 2 on the pipe 3; that the device is simple of construction and durable; that the burner plate being provided with circu lation of air beneath provides a means for keeping it from overheating and burning out.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an oil burner, the combination of an oil supply pipe provided with outlet perforations, a water supply pipe provided with outlet perforations, a cone for said oil and water to run upon adjustably mounted on said oil supply pipe, a burner plate of larger diameter than said cone and mounted below said cone, spaced apart therefrom and an air conveying pipe for supporting said plate and conveying air between said plates.
2. In an oil burner, the combination of an oil supply pipe provided with outlet perforations, a water supply pipe provided with outlet perforations mounted centrally therein, a cone adjustably mounted on said oil supply pipe, a burner plate of larger diameter than said cone, mounted below said cone and spaced apart therefrom, an air conveying pipe for supporting said plate and conveying air between said plate and said cone and below said plate around the outer edge thereof and a hood over the upper end of said water and fuel supply pipes mounted on said water supply pipe.
3. In a crude oil burner the combination of an oil supply pipe, a water supply pipe mounted centrally therein, means for supplying water and oil thereto in regulated quantities, an air intake pipe surrounding said fuel and water supply pipe provided with perforations therein, an annular plate mounted on the upper end of said air intake pipe provided with a central hole therein, adapted to allow the passage of air therethrough, and a cone adjustably mounted above said plate, whereby the fuel from said fuel and water supply pipes will run down onto said cone and drop from the outer edges thereof to said plate.
4. In a crude oil burner the combination of an oil supply pipe, provided with perforations near the top end thereof, a water supply pipe mounted centrally therein provided with perforations near its top end, means for supplying water and oil thereto in regulated quantities, an air intake pipe surrounding said oil supply pipe provided with perforations therein, an annular plate mounted on the upper end of said air intake pipe provided with a central hole therein adapted to allow the passage of air therethrough, and a cone adj ustably mounted on said oil supply pipe, whereby the fuel from said fuel supply pipe will run down onto said cone and drop from the outer edges thereof to said plate and a hood over the upper end of said supply pipes.
