Description

WILHAM E. YEAGER. lmproveme nt in Bolt-Cutters.
Patented May 2, 1871.
time cam.
WILLIAM E. YEAGER, OF LAWRENCE, KANSAS.
Letters Patent No. 114.383, dated May 2, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOLT-CUTTERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and maklng part of the me.
I, WILLLAM E. YEAGER, of Lawrence, in the county of Douglas and State of Kansas, have invented certain Improvements in Bolt-Trimmers, which the following is a specification.
Nature and Object of the Invention.
The first part of my invention relates to the knives projecting on the right andleft side of the machine in such a manner that a bolt 01. rivet may be cut in the right or left corner of a wagon or carriage-body. Second, the distance from the knives to the levers prevents said levers interfering against the side on which the bolt is to be cut.-
Third, the movable shaft to which one knife is attachedis dovetailed to the back of the machine in such a manner as to close the knives evenly, and adds great strength to said back and shaft.
Fourth, the levers press against the end of the shaft, and by the knob attached to the shaft it is drawn back; thus cogs are dispensed with, which are so liable to break.
Fifth, the shaft moving in a box between the knives and levers, prevents said shaft from springing, and
thereby I am enabled to get the distance between the.
I, the knob by which the shaft d is drawn back. v K K, thewooden'handles. L L, the dovetail on shaft D.
J General Dcsc rtpt'lon.
B is the back, to which one of the knives is attached by two strong screws.
The bevel G G, on each side, to secure the shaft D, or to form the dovetail mentioned in the foregoing.
The rib H, to increase the strength, (where needed.)
D is the movable shaft passing throughbox C, and attached to back B by dovetail, and securing the other knifebyi'screws as aforesaid.
O, the box to'whioh the back B is fastened by four screws, through which the shaft D passes from the levers E E to the knives F F.
The levers E E work on two bolts through back B and box 0. The leve-rs are so formed to press against theend of shaft D'that, in bringing the levers together, the knives are closed, and by the knob I the shaft is drawn back when said levers are drawn apart;
The back B, box 0, and shaft D are malleable iron; the knives are cast-steel; the levers are wrought-iron.
Claim.
I claim as my improvement in devices for cutting off the heads of bolts, rivets, and the like'.
The broad support for the cutters F at the end of the shaft D, and the recesses in the cutter-head, conforming in shape to the cutting-edges of the laterallyextended cutters, as and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM E. YEAGER.
