This invention relates to fare `registers and is mainly designed to furnish a satlsfactory accounting device especially adapted for use on so-cai'led pay-a syou-enter conveyances, though its utility is not 11mited to this field. 'On conveyanoes of this type 'conductors o1' vother collectors :of fares, are stationed at the entrance of the'vehicle, usually a street car, and receive fares as the passengers board the cars. In cars of other types, where far/es are collected by passing through the car, the register must be so constructed as to be operable from any part of the car, and because of the necessary complication of connections it is diflficult to provide 'a machine operable from any point, butv which will at the same time permit the separate registration and indication of several Aclasses of fares. In the case of pay-as-youente-r cars, however, the objection noted, is not found, as the collector of fares is not required to move about the car, andl thus may be provided with an easily operated machine which will have capacity for registration and indication of a considerable number of different classes'or values of fares.
It is the main object of the present invention to provide a fare register and indicator especially adapted for this type of conveyance, having separate keys or levers for each class of fare,.the single operation of which will separately register and indicate and also. with paperfeeding mechanism,v whichoperates each time printing is done, therefore providin several classes of fares.
' The machine is also provided with means for printing the total of amounts accumulated by the different registers or counters means for successively printing Atotals 'in g ifer'ent lines on a single sheet of paper. With each printing operation the counters are simultaneously reset.
The machine is also provided with a total counting device which counts the vtotal number of all fares registered, .and separate nor- 'Speeication of Letters Patent.

The machine is provided withl a. plurality l of levers, the depression of any one of which counter. These counters may be designated as follows: Five-cent, three-cent, ticket, transfer, and pass. 'The operating levers are indicated in the drawings Vby numeral yl, and are all'loosely pivoted on a shaft Q. Each lever 'extends in under one of the arms 3 of the indicators 4 rearwardly of the shaft. The indicators are mounted in guide ways 5 and 6 andare s'lidable therein and are normaliy drawn to their ylower position by springs 7. lWVhen any lever 1 is depressed its corresponding indicator is raised so that its respective indication will come between the openings 8 and 9 in the cabinet l0 (Fig. 4). Each indicator is provided with a lug 11. which co-acts with -a s ring-pressedpawl 12, for the purpose of ho ding the ind1cat9r. m its exposed position. The engagement of t e lug 11 with the pawl 13 causes the pawl 12 to be rocked well clear of the lug 114 of whatever indicator is already in exposed position, permitting suchv indicator to .lower before the shoulder 11 of the rising indicator engages or urging the pawl 12 toward the indicators is indicated at 14, and such spring impelled movement of the lpawl is limitedby the edges lpf the indicators. The pawl 12 is'eof course rocked away from the indicator lugs when engaged by' one of the shoulders 11 and would thus release any indicator which is in exposed position regardless of the pawl 13 but in such case the shoulders 11 would all have to' be in the same v ertical plane, as otherwise an exposed indicator might not be released upon the; rise of another indicator. By providing the pawl 12 with the additional pawl 13, the shoulders 11 may vary Within wide limits 4without preventing the correct operation of the indicator mechanism. It may be seen that the pawl 13 will not prevent the lowering of an indicator as it is free to rock downwardly against the tension of its spring 16.
The rearward parts of the levers 1 extend through slots 17 in a guide plate 18. Theplate 18 carries key stops 19 which are pivoted to the plate at 20 to be free to rock a certain extent, but are limited in their rocking movement by the two end levers 21 and 22which extend across the beveled edges o 23 of the two' end key stops.
The total amount of free'movement between the 'key stops is just suiiicient to permit the passageof one lever l and it vis therefore impossible to depress more than one of these levers at a time.
Each lever 1 is provided with aslot 24 (Fig. 7) into which the arni 3 of its respective indicator normally extends.- The slot .f 24 is normally partly closed-fby a slide 25 which is carried -by the lever 1-, by means of the pins 26- which extend. from the llever through a slot 27 in the slide. spring 28, extending from a pin on the lever 1 to a pin on theeslide, normally urges the slide for- 'wa'rdhbut when the lever is in its normal position, :the .slide .isv prevented from mov- .y ing. forward by a rod 29 which is carried by the machine side frames, 30 and 31 and extends across the 'forward edges 32 of all o f the slides 25. The slides `are also provided with small shoulders 33 which upon'the upward movement of the rearward part of the ,eration of the machine, it will carr its respective indicator slightly above t e posi-r tion to which it comes to rest when its lug 11 rests on the pawl 12, but if upon the next operation of the machine the same lever 1 is depressed. the arm 3 of its respective indicator will'not be -in the path of the shoulder 33 ofthe slide 25. Therefore the slide 25 will spring forwardly when clear .of the rod 29 and then does not obstruct the opening 24 in the lever, as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 7. By this construction -when the rear of the lever l reaches its highest position it will not strike the arm 3 of its respective indicator and for this reason not cause a need,- less vibration of the indicator. The strokes of the levers 1 are limited by thetie bars 34 and 35.
Each lever 1 is connected' by a link 36 to the carrying frame 37 of a multipronged awl 38 'of its respective counter 39. TheI rames 37 are loosely pivoted on a shaft 40 and the pawls 38 which are pivotally carried by the frames are adapted to engage ratchets 41 when their respective carrying frames 37 are rocked downwardly upon the depression of a lever 1. Each ratchet 41 is ixed to a type wheel 42 loosely journaled upon the shaft 40, but normally prevented from rotatin in one direction by a retaining pawl 43 ig. 4). Any desired transfer between the counter Wheels maybe employed, that illustra-ted being of the well knownl deepnotch type, and not needing particular descri tion. i'
T e total counter is indicated by numeralf 45. Its retaining pawls are indicated at 46 and a multipronged pawl by means of which the counter is actuated is indicated at 47. The pawl 47 is carried by a frame 48 which by means of the link 49 is connected to a key actuated frame 50. The frame 50 is composed of two arms 51 pivoted on va rod l 54 and having a connecting bar 52, which passes over the upper edges of all of the levers 1 and accordingly when any lever 1 is depressed the frame 50 will be rocked upwardly causing one to be added to the counter 45. A spring 53 (Fig. 1) which is coiled around the rod 54 upon which the frame 50 is pivotedl urges the frame 50 to its lower position and therefore. serves to re- I turn a depressed lever 1, to its initialV position. The rod 52 by coacting with lugs 54 (Fig. 4) of the levers 1 which are not depressedserves to prevent their depression during the time, upwardly and returning. By this means, the rod 52 and lugs 54 serve the same purpose as the stops 19 being an amava? additional precaution against ,an improper operation .vof the machine. e
The wheels yof the counter 45. are provided with characters -which fmaiy :be fread from the `front -o the .machine .whereas the counters 39 are provided with reversed type characters suitable :for vprinting upon -a -detail strip 55.
The rod 52 extends :through a notch 56 (Fig. 3.) in allever 57 at-the .right of themachine. The lever 57 is-loosely ypivoted upon the shaft 2 and at its rear end is forked for the purpose of engaging a -sliding -rod 58 at an annular groove 59 l` in,the same. Because of this arrangement the `:depression of a lever l will cause the-slide l rod 58.to be moved gupwardly 4and then returned to Lits initial fposition. These pawls are .mounted on pins extending fromthe side :trame 3d and are spring pressed as Yshown toward their respective `ratchet teeth .of 'the member 162. It may be seen lfrom Fig. 6'which is a top plan view .of this full stroke mechanism, that the rows of teeth 68 and 64 are Inot both in the same vertical plane -with their respective pawls but the member 62 is provided atbottom and top with inclined surfaces 65 and -66 for co-acting with the inclined lugs 67 and 68 ofthe ,flugs 60 and 61 so that when the member 162 reaches the limits of its upward and downward strokes it will be partly rotated so as alternately to present the rows of Iteeth 63 and 64 to their respective pawls. When the membert 62 is in its lower or home position the teeth 63 will be in line with the pawl 70. Therefore it is possible to move the member 62 as is necessary in order to operatethe machine,'but i-t is impossible 'to return vthe same before it has reached its -upper -position clear off the pawl 70. When the member 62 engages the Alug 68 `it is swung 1in such position that :the teeth 64 are engaged by the pawl 71 upon the lowering of the member 62 which permits the member 62 to lower but prevents it from being returned upwardly until it has reached its initial lower position. The idea of employing a so-called full stroke device in machines of this general type 'is well known, but this particular form shown .has the advantage of requiring much less 'lost motion than is usual. tri-p .or .other period, the -totals on the .counters may be automatically printed on a strip of paperfeoncealed inside Sthe machine, and the counters Ireset .to normal zero reading. The means, .rfor causing :such .total .printing -and resetting .may be under the control of the -farecollector, but he will -desirably fnot have .access .'to the record strip, which will be withdrawn from .the` machine at the end of any desired period by some inspector or other trusted employee. After such printing operation the record strip is automatically fed a-shortdistance so that the :next impression may be on a different line.
The 4detail .record strip 55 is led from a supply roll 72 around .a platen 73, Vupwardly between the roll 74 and the platen and .past a 'knife edge 75. The lower part of ythe e platen is encircled by a .paper guide 76.
The supply vroll 72, the platen, and related mechanism are all carried by frame arms 77 which are supported by a shaft 78 journaled in -the two machine side frames 30 Iand '311. The lframe arms77 are tied together by the shaft 719.offthe platen zroll and the knife 7,5. The right hand frame arm 77 carries a lstud 80 which extends into the cam race '81 of a disk or cylinderl 82. In order to take an impression of the total which .has been esl lill
and is provided with a key seat 90 into which a key may be inserted for the purpose of rotating the shaft. This shaft also carries a mutilated gear 91 which after an impression is taken meshes with a pinion 92 carried by the counter wheel shaft 40 and causes the rotation of this shaft. The shaft 40 is provided with a longitudinal groove which .30.. co-acts with small pawls carried by the counter wheels for the purpose lof engaging such pawls upon the rotation of the shaft to cause a forward rotation of the counter wheels to their zero position. This is a well known construction for resetting counter wheels, and is illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The cabinet of the register is provided 4with an opening at 93 (Fig. 1) to permit the key by means of which the impression of the total is taken and the counter is reset, to be inserted. When returning the counters to zero, the shaft 89 is stopped at the proper point by` a pawl 116 which coacts for this purpose with a suitable notch in the periphery of the cam 82. The pawl 116 is urged into engagement with the notchv in the cam by a spring 119 (Fig. 3).
In order to move the pawl away from the cam 82 to permit the counters to be reset again, after the machine has again been operated, the pawl is provided with'an elongated slot 118 surrounding its pivot and a downwardly extending arm 117. This arm is engaged bythe arm 57 upon the depression of one of the levers 1, causing the pawl to be rocked rearwardly away from the cam 82. When in such position the pawl is drawn upwardly by the spring 119. It then does not prevent rotation of the cam 82 ex- '60' cept after it has made a complete rotation.
The total counter 45 is reset in the same manner by a key which is inserted in an opening 94 in the cabinet. Thisl opening, however, is normally covered by a shield 95 (Fig. 3) which is urged by a spring 96 away from the opening but is held in such position .by a hinged lid 961 ,when in its closedposition. The lid'when closed engages a rod 97 (Fig. 3) which is slidably' lfeeding device comprises an arm 100 whichv is loosely pivoted upon the shaft 79 and at its lower end is forked over a pin 101 which extends inwardly from the side frame 31. Because of this arrangement when the frame 77 is'rocked to take an impression the arm 100 will first be rocked in the direction indi-y cated by the arrow 102 causing a pawl 103 which is carried by the arm to move backwardly one tooth space with respect to a ratchet 104 which is rigid with the platen 73. Then upon the return of the frame77, the pawl 103 engages the ratchet and causes the same to rotate forwardlyone tooth space thereby feeding theA strip of detail paper 55.
Means are provided for locking the levers 1 against manipulation at the time a printing impression is taken and thel counters reset. This'means comprises `a stop 105 (Figs.
3 and 5) which is pivoted to a stud 106 on the frame 31 land is provided with a shoulder 107 which by rocking the stop rearwardly comes into the path of the vertical full stroke rod 58 and prevents the upward movement of the same. The stop is normally held out of the path of the rod 58 by a spring 108 whichforces an end 109 of the stop 105 in a semicircular cut 110 in the periphery of the cam 82. By rotating the cam 82, the end 109 of the top 105 is forced out of the cut in the cam bringing the shoulder 107 over the rod 58. It is held in such position by the periphery of the cam until the cam arrives at its home position, when it again swings into the cut in the cam permitting the operation of the machine.
To operate the machine each fare is registered by depressing the proper lever 1 for the fare causing the respective` counter to advance one unit and also the total counter 45 to advance one unit. At the completion of eachtrip, or period of time, 'the collector causes the printing lot' the total by rotating the shaft 89 which also causes' the counters 39 to be reset. These records of the total fares collected by'one or more operators are retained locked within the casing, access to the same being had only by an authorized inspector or other person provided .with a key for unlocking the lid 961.

operating the resetting devices simultaneously to reset all of said counters.

In a machlne of the class l described, the .combination with a plurality of count- -ers and separate operating means for each of said countersyof a platen, inking means, andresetting devices common to all of' said counters; and common operating means for, first, inking the counters, then, rocking they platen,thereby taking an impression upon a record strip from said counters, and finally operating the resetting devices simultaneously to reset all of the counters.

In a machine of the class described, the combinationwith ,a plurality of counters and separate operating means for each of said counters; of a. platen, inking means, and resetting devices common to all of said counters; and means common to the platen, inking means and resetting devices for first -.actuating the inking means by movement of lthe platen then giving the platen 'an additional movement for taking an impression upon a record strip from all of said counters and finally operating the resetting devices simultaneously toreset all of said counters.
