To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, REINI-IoLD KRUM- MING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, have invented [certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional-Post Binders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in sectional post binders.

The main object of this invention is to provide in a sectional post binder an improved sectional post in which the removable sections are adapted as keys for use in removing any other removable section or disconnecting the removable sections at any joint.

Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.

I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.

The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.

A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:

Figure I is a plan view of a binder embodying the features of my invention, the top cover being omitted. Fig. II is a detail longitudinal section through the binder on a line corresponding to line 22 of Fig. I, the post being shown in full lines. Fig. III is an enlarged detail view partially in vertical section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. II. Fig. IV is a detail view of a modified structure in which the binding bar key is adapted as a key for disengaging the post sections. Fig. V is a detail view corresponding to Fig. III, partially in vertical section, of a modification in which the top section is adapted to be released by the binding bar key, the key extensions: as shown in Fig. III being omitted from the removable post sections.

In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.

Referring to the drawing, the binder illustrated consists of a bottom cover 1 hinged to the bottom binding bar 2. The top binding bar 3 is chambered to receive the head 4: of the top post section 5 and is provided Specification of Letters Patent.

with a locking slide 6 adapted to engage the head. This slide is actuated by the key 7. As suitable structures of this general type are well known in the art and as my present improvements do not relate thereto I do not illustrate or describe the same in further dctail herein.

The bottom or base post section 8 is riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the bottom binding bar 2. The removable sections 9 and the base section 8 have longitudinal bores 1G open at the tops thereof. The removable sections 9 also have transverse holes 11 therein. The removable sections 9 and the top section 5 have reduced threaded portions 12 at their lower ends adapted to be threaded into the bores 10 of the adjacent sections, as clearly shown in Fig. III. The removable sections 5 and 9 also have pinlike extensions 13 at their lower ends constituting key bits adapted to be inserted in the transverse holes 11, whereby one section is adapted as a key for releasing another. The holes 11 are disposed below the ends of the pin portions so that a key may be inserted to disengage or tighten the sections at any point. The top section 5 is provided with a slot 14 in its head adapted to receive the edge of a coin or the edge of one of the finger pieces 15 of the binder bar key 16 where the binder is of the type using keys. By thus arranging the parts any of the removable sections may be used as a key for releasing or in assembling any other section.

In Figs. IV and V, I show a modified form of my invention in which the binder bar key 16 is provided with a pin-like bit 17 disposed centrally between the wings of the finger piece 15 so that it may be inserted in the holes 11, as shown in Fig. IV. The wings 15 are so spaced that when the pin 17 is inserted the inner edges of the wings engage the sides of the post sections. This is of advantage in that it prevents the edges of the holes of the post becoming burred or roughened by the key. It will be understood that in practice these post sections are smooth finished and are usually nickeled or otherwise plated and polished. This smooth finish is necessary in order to permit the sheets or leaves, indicated at 18, to slide freely on the posts and without abrading them. The smooth finish however makes it difficult to turn the post sections with the fingers and it is desirable that they should be screwed up tightly in order to preserve the smooth surface on the post and also to prevent their becoming accidentally loosened. Where the binder bar key 16' is pr vided with a key bit 17 it is not necessary to provide the removable sections with the bit extensions 13, see Fi V. The top section is then provided with a hole 13.

My improved sectional post is very convenient to use and is also simple and economical in structure.

rlaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A. sectional post for loose leaf binders composing a base section and a plurality of removable sections, the sections other than the top having central bores open at their tops and the sections other than the top and base having transverse holes therein, the removable sections having reduced threaded portions at their lower ends adapted to be threaded into the bores of they adjacent sections and pin-like extensions constituting bits adapted to be inserted in said transverse holes in said sections whereby one section is adapted as a key for releasing another, the transverse holes being disposed so that they are below the ends of the bits when the sections are assembled;

2. A sectional post for loose leaf binders comprising a base section and a plurality of removable sections, the sections other than the top having central bores open at their tops and the sections other than the top and base having transverse holes therein, the

removable sections having reduced threaded portions at their lower ends adapted to be threaded into the bores of the adjacent sec tions and pin-like extensions constituting bits adapted to be inserted in said transverse holes in said sections whereby one section is adapted as a key for releasing another.

8. A sectional post for loose leaf binders comprising a base section and a plurality of removable sections, the sections other than the top having central bores open at their tops and the sections other than the top and base having transverse holes therein, the removable sections having reduced threaded portions at their lower ends adapted to be threaded into the bores of the adjacent sections and at least one of said removable sections being provided with a pin-like exten sion constituting a bit adapted to be inserted in said transverse holes in said sections whereby said section is adapted for use as a key.

A sectional post for loose leaf binders comprising a plurality of removable sections having central bores open at their tops and transverse holes therein and reduced threaded portions at their lower ends adapted to be threaded into the bores of the adjacent sections, and at least one of said sections being provided with a pin-like extension constituting a bit adapted to be inserted in said transverse holes whereby said section is adapted for use as a key.

5. A sectional post for loose leaf binders comprising a pair of sections, one of said sections having a central bore open at the top, and a transverse hole therein and the other a reduced threaded portion at its lower end adapted to be threaded into said bore and a pin-like extension constituting a bit adapted to be inserted in said transverse hole whereby such section is adapted for use as a key.

6. A sectional post for loose leaf binders comprising a plurality of removable sections having central bores open at their tops and t'ansverse holes therein and reduced threaded portions at their lower ends adapted to be threaded into the bores of adjacent sections, and a key having outwardly diverging finger pieces and a pin-like bit disposed centrally between said finger pieces adapted to be engaged in the transverse holes in said sections, the distance between said finger pieces being such that they engage the sides of the post when the bit is engaged in a hole.

7. A sectional post for loose leaf binders comprising a plurality of removable sections having central bores open at their tops and transverse holes therein and reduced threaded portions at their lower ends adapted to be threaded into the bores of adjacent sections, and a key having outwardly diverging finger pieces and a pin-like bit adapted to be engaged in the transverse holes in said sections.
