To all 'tvhom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES M. BRnsEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mattoon, in the county of Coles and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road- Machlnes, of Which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in drags and has for its object to provlde a new form of drag adapted to crush and d1stribute dirt, loam or the like.
My device is especially adapted for use in connection with road grading machines where it is desired to distributeand smooth the dirt thrown into the center of the road, as well as to crush any clods or lumps contained in such dirt.
Another object is to provide means to form the crown of the road to the desired curvature. V
Still another object of my lIIVGHtI provide a device of the class described which may be formed of separable sections, flexibly connected, so that additional sectlons may be added thereto or taken therefrom, if so desired.
Other objects will be set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 is a plan view of a drag embodymg my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevatlon of the same; Fig. 3 is a detail of a modified form of my device.
Like numerals refer to like elements throughout the drawings, in which 10 designates generally my drag having in the form shown in Fig. 1, for example, a plurality of members 11, 12, 13 comprising, channel beams having the upwardly extending side flanges 11 12 13 therein respectively. The webs 11 12 13 of the respective members are provided with the apertures 11, 12, 13 therein respectively, these apertures being provided with the enlarged portions 11, 12 13 and the comparatively narrow portions 11 12 13 respectively. Chains 14: are utilized to connect the members together and in assembling they may be passed through the enlarged portions of the apertures, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and when the members are spaced apart and adjusted to suit the adjacent link of each chain, may be turned to permit its placement in the narrow portions ll 12, 13 with the respective apertures, whereupon the succeeding link 10- vention with more or less cated at right angles to such apertures will prevent the withdrawal of the chain when the drag is in operation. Additional fastening means may be used, if so desired. The chains are passed beneath the front of each member and inserted upwardly through the apertures and over the rear flange to the next succeeding member and so on. By this construction or arrangement, it will be apparent that as a pull is exerted upon the extremities of the chains 14, the action will be such as to slightly tilt or incline the respective members so that their rear edges are in contact with the surface over which they are passing. This operates to effectively distribute the accumulated dirt or Where used to crush clods or the like will serve to fully and effectively break up and crush the same.
It will be apparent in Fig. 2 that I have constructed the member 11 comparatively light; the next succeeding member 12, I have shown as heavy in construction and the member 13 as still heavier. By this construction a gradually increasing crushing effort is applied to material acted on, as will be apparent.
Where used in forming roads in connection with road grading machines, I find it advantageous to employ members such as 15, shown in Fig. 3, the same being slightly curved to conform to the curvature of the crown of the road or to form the same with the desired curvature. In other respects this form resembles that previously described.
It will be obvious that I have provided an improved and practical form of road drag in which any desired number of crushing or distributing members may be utilized and which is economical and easy to manufacture and readily assembled or disassembled, as desired.
While I have shown and described my inparticularity, I to such showing scope of the apdo not wish to be restricted or description beyond the pended claims.
What I claim is 2- 1. In a device of the class described, a plurality of scraper members spaced apart, and a continuous link chain securing said members together, said members having apertures therethrough adapted to be detachably engaged by the desired links of said chain whereby'said members may be spaced apart as desired.

and flexible connecting members extending between and secured to said scraper members, said connecting members being-arranged to pass over the following edges of said scraper members and beneath the leading edges of said scraper members and to tilt said members with respect to the surface being operated upon when said device isin v operation.
