FILING APPLIANCE.

' To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE J mom, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Filing Appliances, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to filing appliances adapted to receive and detachably hold papers, bills, or slips, whereby they can be quickly and conveniently inspected, or removed, or new ones inserted, or entries or alterations made on them.

For the purpose of illustration, I have, in the accompanying drawings, shown and herein described one form of filing appli-' ance embodying my invention.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a filing appliance embodying my invention, the near side of the casing being broken away. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the holders. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33-0f' Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of a holder. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section on line 55 of Fig. 3. Figs. 6 and 7 are fragmentary views illustrating the manner of constructing the back of an intermediate holder. Fig. 8 is a rear perspective view of one of the opposite end holders. Figs. 9 and 10 are fragmentary perspective views showing the construction of the opposite end holders.

In the drawings :1 indicates a casing which may be of any preferred or ordinary form of construction. It preferably includes a base l and a back 1 2 indicates a series of holders which may be arranged or supported in any manner in the casing, but preferably they are normally arranged in upright position on the base 1 and rest against the back 1 and are adapted to swing forwardly and downward. Such arrangement and construction permits either face of each and every holder to be exposed.

3 indicates hinge devices which permit the holders to be reclined, these devices preferably being designed to connect the lowe ends of the holders together.

3 indicates suitable supports for the front holder, which permit the said holder to swing from one position to another. These supports are also preferably arranged to permit the entire series of holders to be re moved from the casing.

4 indicates suitable means which guide the rearmost holder in its up and down movements as any of the holders forward thereof are operated. The guide means illustrated comprises a pivoted bar which may be moved into a vertical or inclined position (see Fig. 1) for guiding the said holder.

Each holder 2 comprises a back 2 formed of sheet metal, end walls 2 ribs 2 and paper holding devices 2 The opposite side edges and the pivot edge of each back 2 are flanged to strengthen the backs and to provide a simple and neat form of means by which to connect the end walls 2 to the back. As shown at 2", 2 theflange is cut into sections which extend laterally, alternately in opposite directions from the edge of the back. Preferably the end walls 2 are formed from sheet metal each of which is doubled on itself along its opposite longitudinal edges over and upon the

2, 2, thereby forming smooth end walls for the holders and also imparting rigidity to them.

The metal of the end wall along the hinged edge of the back may be bent upwardly, as shown at 2, to accommodate the lower ends of the ribs 2.

5 indicates'a series of loop members projecting laterally from one or both sides of the back 2 of each holder and extending around theadjacent rib 2 to secure it in place. These rib supporting loops are preferably formed integrally with the back. At 5 the metal of the back may be slitted on lines parallel to each other. The sections of metal between the slits are then pressed lat erally and each bent on parallel lines 5", 5, to form side and front walls 5, 5, respectively, within which the ribs closely fit. Preferably, each alternate section of metal between the cuts or slits 5 is projected laterally from opposite sides or faces of the back 2*, so that a single strip of material may be used for both ribs 2.

As will be understood from the drawings, the loop members are arranged in alinement so that one rib 2, extending from the lower or hinged end continuously through all the loop members to the free end of the holder may be employed. There is one series of loop members for each rib or each two of alined ribs, as many series of members being provided as there are ribs on one face of the holder. It will also be understood that the slits 5'? may be separated, equally or 1m equally, from each other any desired distance, to form loop members of any desired length. Furthermore, the ribs are preferably shaped to snugly fit within the walls of the oppositely projecting loop members, and by holding the same from being dis torted, prevents an expansion of the back in directions at angles to the ribs.

Since it is customary in the type of apparatus to which my invention is applied to construct the opposite faces of each holder substantially alike, with the rubbing, or spacing, or pocket forming ribs on one side alined with the ribs on the opposite side of the back of said holder, it will be readily understood that my invention provides sim ple means for facilitating the manufacture of the apparatus producing a rigid holder with plain backs whose opposite faces are divided into pockets or compartments without the use of securing devices such as rivets or nails in any manner.

When a rib 2 is to be provided on one face only of a back 2 for instance in the construction of the opposite end holders of the series of holders 2 as shown in Figs. 8, 9 and 10, the metal of the back between each two alternate loop sections is slitted on par allel lines 5 perpendicular to the transverse slits 5 and the metal within the slits 5 and 5 in line with said loop sections is taken out or removed so that when the back is contracted, which contraction is incident to the operation of projecting the loop sections laterally, the edges formed by the cuts 5 abut together edge to edge and thus complete the continuity of the back 2*.

As shown in Fig. 9, the portion of the metal between the cuts 5, 5 has been removed, whereby the loops 5 can be formed and the edges 5 brought together edge to edge aS shown in Figs. 8 and 10.

6 indicates a rod extending from the outer end of one side wall 2* to the outer end of the opposite side wall of each holder, the metal ofthe back being extended and bent over the bar 6, as shown at 2* and preferably pressed into close engagement with the ad jacent face of the back. The rod 6 is thus secured to the back at all points longitudinally and serves to keep the abutting edges 5 together and in the same plane with each other. It also serves to strengthen the free ends of the holders.

To those skilled in the art of making filing appliances of the class described. many alterations in construction and widely differing embodiments and applicationsof my invention will suggest themselves, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. My disclosures and the description herein are purely illustrative, and are not intended to be in any sense limiting.

What I claim is 1. A holder or frame a filing appliance, comprising a back formed from sheet metal and provided with flanges along its opposite side edges each flange being divided into sections which project laterally in opposite directions alternately from the adjacent edge of the said back, and an end wall for each of said flanged edges formed from a strip of sheet metal which is bent or doubled on itself over and upon said flange sections along its opposite longitudinal edges.

2. A holder or frame for a filing appliance, comprising a back formed-from sheet metal, a series of ribs mounted on one face of said back and a plurality of loop members for each rib projecting laterally from the adjacent face of the back and extending around the adjacent rib for securing it to the back, the said loop members being formed integrally with said back, and the remaining portion of the back in line with the loop members being cut away and the edges thus formed being abutted together.

8. A holder or frame for a filing appliance comprising a back. a series of strips forming ribs for the opposite'faces of said back. and a plurality of loop members for each strip integrally connected with the back and surrounding the walls of the adjacent strip, each loop member extending laterally from one face of the back in a direction opposite to that of the adjacent loop members.

4. A holder for a filing appliance comprising a back formed from sheet metal and slitted on parallel lines, and certain of the sections or portions of the metal between the slits being pressed or projected laterally to form a series of alined loop members integral with said back, and pocket forming ribs extending through the loop members and secured to the back thereby, the remaining portions of the back in line with the loop members being cut away and the edges thus formed being abutted together.

5. A holder for a filing appliance comprising a back formed from sheet metal and slitted on parallel lines, the adjoining sections of the metal between the slits being pressed outwardly in opposite directions to form loop members, and a strip extending through the loop members and projecting from opposite faces of the back to form spacing or pocket forming ribs thereon.

6. A holder for a filing appliance, comprising a back formed from sheet metal and slitted on two parallel lines, the section of the metal between the slits being pressed outwardly away from one face of the back to form an integral loop member, and a portion of the metal adjacent to said section of metal projected to form the loop member being removed and the edges of the metal formed by the removed portion being arranged edge to edge in the same plane.

7. A holder for a filing appliance, comprising back formed from sheet metal and slitted on two parallel lines, the section of the metal between the slits being pressed outwardly away from one face of the back to form an integral loop member, and a portion of the metal adjacent to said section of metal projected to form the loop member being removed and the edges of the metal formed by the removed portion being arranged edge to edge in the same plane, and means for maintaining said edges in alinement.

8. A holder for a filing appliance comprising a back formed from sheet metal and slitted on parallel lines, and certain of the sections or portions of the metal between the slits being pressed or projected laterally to form a series of alined loop members integral with said back, pocket forming ribs eX- tending through the loop members and secured to the back thereby, a portion of the metal at the end of the ribs being removed and the edges of the back formed by said removed portion being arranged edge to edge, and means for maintaining said edges in alinement.

9. A holder for a filing appliance comprising a back formed from sheet metal and slitted on parallel lines, the adjoining sections of the metal between the slits being pressed outwardly in opposite directions to form loop members, and a strip extending through the loop members and projecting from opposite faces of the back to form spacing or pocket forming ribs thereon, the said strips being of a size and shape to snugly fit within the walls of the oppositely projecting loop members and serving to prevent the expansion of the back in directions at angles to the strips.

10. In a filing appliance, the combination of a series of holders adapted for support and swingable movement relatively to each other, and means carried by each holder for spacing it from an adjacent holder, said spacing means comprising a series of sections of metal forming the back pressed laterally, alternately, in opposite directions to form loop members, and strips extending through said loop members.
