FIREARM.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LYMAN H. COBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at F itchburg, in the county of IVorcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Firearms, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings forming a part of the same, in which Figure l is a side view representing the breech of a gun barrel and a portion of the supporting frame. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the plane of the broken line 2-2, Fig. 1. Figs. 3, 4, and represent rear end views of the barrel, detached from the frame, showing the same view of the barrel as Fig. 2, but with modified forms of construction. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the rear end of the barrel on the plane of the broken line 6-6, Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a similar sectional view on the plane of the broken line 77, Fig. 3. Fig. 8 is a similar sectional view on the plane of the broken line 88, Fig. 4.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts in the different views.
The object of my invention is to procure a more rigid and stable connection between the breech of the gun barrel and the supporting rame of a gun, and it consists in enlarging the breech of the barrel upon the lower side supported by the concave seat of the gun frame.
Referring to the accompanying drawings 1 denotes a portion of a gun barrel, 2 a portion of the supporting frame provided with a concave seat fitted to the convex contour of the cylindrical portion of the gun barrel. The embodiment of my invention as illustrated in Fig. 2 consists in the application to the gun barrel of two forged or stamped pieces 3 and 4: fitting the under side of the barrel 1, and also fitting the concave seat 5 in the frame 2. Each of the pieces 3 and 4 is integral with one half of the gun barrel lug 6 which is received in a recess 7 1n the frame. The two halves of the gun barrel lug are brazed together and the curved pieces 3 and t are each brazed to the periphery of the gun barrel, forming an enlargement in the diameter of the barrel on the under side to fit the enlarged concave seat 5 in the frame.
The construction shown in Fig. 3 consists in forming the barrel lug 6 in a single piece Specification of Letters Patent.

and having winged pieces 8 and 9 which fit the periphery of the gun barrel and provide an enlarged convex surface 10 adapted to fill the concave seat 5 of the frame.
The construction illustrated in Fig. iconsists in forming the barrel lug 6 and the enlargement of the barrel upon its lower side at 11 and 12 integral with the barrel 1, all being forged from a single piece.
In Fig. 5 I have shown still another modification in which the enlargement 13 and 14 is integral with the barrel 1, while the barrel lug 6 is formed in a separate piece with a brazed joint between the lug and the barrel as shown by the line 15.
lVhatever form of construction may be adopted, the essential feature of my invention consists in forming upon the lower side of the barrel at its breech a peripheral enlargement by which the lower part of the barrel which rests upon the gun frame is diametrically increased, in order to increase the periphery of that portion which is supported in the concave seat of the gun frame, and thereby secure a firmer support for the breech end of the barrel.
As shown in Fig. 2, the side wings 3 andl extend upon each side only as far as the supporting frame, the entire enlargement sidewise being inclosed in the concave seat 5 of the gun frame. This enables the radius of curvature to be greatly increased far beyond what the increased strength of the barrel demands. It also avoids increasing the diameter of the upper half of the barrel which would require a readjustment of the gun sights.
I am aware that it is not new to increase the thickness of metal at the breech end of the barrel in order to secure greater strength to resist the charge, and I do not claim such an enlargement of the barrel. I secure a largely increased surface to be seated in the gun frame without unduly increasing the diameter of the barrel. The utility of my improvement is especially noticeable in breakdown guns, as the hinged connection between the barrel and the gun frame or stock is rendered more rigid and secure and at the same time allows the barrel catch to work freely.
