IMPROVEMENT IN WHlFFLETREE-COUPLINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 114,269, dated May 2, 1871.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, HYDE GROGKER, Jr., of Montrose, in the county of Susquehanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Whiftletree-Ooupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in whiffletree-couplings; and it consists of a strong cast-metal plate with a large central hole, the wall of which has an annular recess at the lower side, which plate is attached to one of the pieces to be coupled, and holds in said recess the flange of another plate fitted into thelarge hole and attached to the other piece, the whole forming a cheap and simple coupling which may be quickly bolted or riveted to the parts.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved coupling, the evener, and whiftletree. Fig. 2 is a plan of the coupling and evener.

A is a part of theevener; B, a strong castmetal plate bolted to the upper side, or to the lower one, if the whiffletree is to be suspended from that side. It has a large vertical central hole through it, in the wall of which and lower side of the plate is made the annular recess G. l) is another strong cast-metal plate of circular form, and fitted into the hole of plate B, being provided with a flange, E, fitting the recess 0. The said plate is preferably provided with ears F, shown dot-ted in Fig. 1, for reception of the whiffletree Gr between them, to be secured by a rivet, H, but other fastenings may be used, and the ears, when used and made of malleable metal, may be extended above the top and bent up over it; but this may be arranged as preferred. The two plates are first adjusted to each other, and then one is attached to one piece and the other to the other piece, and may be applied with but little labor, very much less than is required to make the ordinary attachment with wrought-metal fastenings. This improved coupling is much more durable than the others, and it prevents all vibration, except that required, much better than the other couplings. It is alike applicable for attaching the evener to the pole, and may be used for connecting the reach to the bolster in substitution of the king-bolt, and by its use the fifth-wheel may be dispensed with, for it possesses the function of that part.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The centrally apertured and rabbeted plate B, and the flanged plate D E F, combined, as described, with the evener A and whiffietree G, for the purpose specified.
