HAT-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1915.
Application filed May 27, 1914. Serial No. 841,365.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VICTOR J. Fmonnn, citizen of the United States, and resident of the city .of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hat hangers of the class designed to securely suspend a hat from a hook on the wall and the invention has for its object to provide a device of this character that is simple and inexpensive in construction and practical in its operation, and one that can be folded up inside of the hat and that will be firmly retained in folded position until called into use. 1. I
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain new and novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation showing my improved hat hanging device as applied to the hat. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view showing the hanger as removed from the hat and with the loops in unfolded or extended position. Fig. 3- is a front view showing the loops in folded position. Fig. 4- is a greatly enlarged view illustrating a portion of a hat in section with my improved device in position therein. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view showing the bridge end of the first loop member. Fig. 6 is an enlarged side elevation showing the ends of the second loop engaging the eyes of the first loop with the stock of the outer curves of said eyes forming a stop-to limit the backward throw of the Fig. 7- is a perspective view of the clip for securing the plate of the hanger in position to the sweat band. Fig. 8 is a side elevation showing a hat and a hanger in operative position thereon and by which the hat is suspended from a nail on the wall.
Referring to the drawings 10 designates the plate which may be of any suitable material preferably being made of a thin sheet of metal or vulcanized fiber. This plate is made to conform to the inside of a hat and to fit down inside of the sweat band.
On the upper edge of this plate which exmetal, folded to form an eye portion 12v and then bentback and its ends 13 passed down on either side of the plate 10 and secured thereto by rivets or screws. The first loop of the hanger is bent into a U form, the ends 14 of the side legs 15 are bentinward substantially at right angles to. said legs, and" enter the eye 12 in which these ends are held tight or under frictional tension so that when turned they willibe retained byfrictlonal pressure in any desired position. The frictional pressure on these pivoted ends may be adjusted. by squeezing together the plates about the eye. The bridge portion at the opposite end of this loop member has each of its corners bent to form an eye 16 see Fig. 5which eyes extend beyond the bridge longitudinally, and also extend .beyond the legs laterally, this bridge portion and adjacent thereto the legs are'bent outwardly-as at 17 forming yieldable projections or protuberances for the purpose presently described. The second or outer loop member 18 is also formed of wire bentin substantially U shape and, the ends of this loop are passed through the eyes 16 of the first loop, the said ends are then bent around the lower or bridge portion 10 of these eyes by which construction it will be seen that the stock at the upper portion of these eyes form a stop or rest against which the back of this outer loop brings up 'to limit its motion in that direction and prevents the same from being straightened out in line with the first loop member.
By this construction it will be seen that.
when the device is called into use into position shown in Fig. 8, the outer loop will naturally set up into the required position and will not fall down out of the way when the hat is to be hung on the hook. When the device is folded back into the hat the outer loop, in being folded down against the first loopis obliged to spring beyond these protuberances 17 which serve to retain this loop firmly in closed position by the inherent spring of the legs to prevent the hanger fromshaking about inside the hat.
In some cases it is desired to secure the base plate member firmly to the hat and to accomplish this I have provided a bendable finger member 20-see Fig. .7-one end of which is split as at 21 so that when it is passed through theplate one of the split portions may be turned up and on one side of the plate and the other passed through the plate and bent downward, thereby firmly securing the finger to the plate and in extending position it may be passed through the sweat band 23 and bent downward to secure the plate in position thereat or this finger may be connected to the opposite side of the plate and be passed through the side of the hat if desired. 1
I claim:
1. A hat hanger comprising a plate adapted to [it between the sweat band and the hat crown, a joint member secured to said plate, a wire loop having a bridge portion and having its ends pivoted in said joint member, the wire at the outer corners of said loop being bent outwardly and around laterally and back to form eye portions extending be yond said bridge portion of the loop, and a second loop member having its ends passed through said eyes and bent around the bridge thereof, whereby the back of the legs of the second loop will engage the outer walls of the eyes of the first loop to form a stop and limit the backward motion of the former.
2. A hat hanger comprising a plate adapted to fit between the sweat band and the hat crown, a joint member secured to said plate, a Wire loop having a bridge portion and having its ends tightly gripped but adapted to swing in said joint member, the wire at the outer corners of said loop being bent outwardly and around laterally and back to form eye portions extending beyond said bridge portion of the loop, and a second loop member having its ends passed through said eyes and bent around the bridge portion thereof whereby the back of the legs of the second loop will engage the outer walls of the eyes of the first loop to form a stop and limit the backward motion of the former, and laterally extending protubrances formed in the yieldable legs of one of the loops over which the legs of the other loop must spring in passing to and from folded position to hold the second yoke either closed or open as de sired;
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
