JOSEPH STANTON, 0E BUFFALO, NEW YORK, AssIeNoa TO JOHN KIHLBERG AND ewis P. KIRGHMYER, or sAME PLACE, ASSIGNORS TO SAID KIHLBERG AND MICHAEL MESMER, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 114,217, dated April 25. 1871.
lMPROVEMENT IN TRUNK-LOCKS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pan: of the same.
certain new and useful Improvements 'in Trunk- Looks, of which the following is a specification.
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
' My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the hasp-plate with wedge-shaped lugs and hasps and corresponding wedge shaped recesses in the lock proper, as will be presently more fully explained.
To enable others to understand the construction and advantages of my lock, 1 will describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, I
Figure 2 isa rear elevation, and- Figure 3 is a sectional elevation. of my improved lock.
Similar letters indicate like parts in the several figures.
A is the main plate or case inclosing the lock proper, which is attached to the body of the trunk,
The locking mechanism, which may be of any wellknown' construction, is shown at B, having lockingbolts 0 O.
Recesses l) D and G G are provided, Which'are wedge-shape in form and adapted to receive the correspondingly-shaped hasps H H and lugs F F formed upon the upper plate E, which is secured to the lid of the trunk.
The hasps H H are so construct-ed as to be readily secured in position by the bolts 0 G.
The operation of my improvement is as follows: The parts A E being attached in the proper manner to the trunk and lid, upon closing the latter the small ends or points of the' hasps and lugs enter the enlargedpor-tion of the recesses D and G, the beveled sides of either guiding the hasps and lugs to their proper places when at rest.
The advantage of this construction, it will be seen, is in lessening the liability of the abrasion of the corners of the hasps and lugs and recesses, for, the smallest part of the former and thelargest extent of the latter being brought together, a lateral play equal to the difl'erence between the topandbottom of the Wedge-shaped hasps Y and lugs musttake place before the corners can come in contact, and after the points have once entered the beveled sides, as heretofore stated, guide the parts properly to their places.
W'hat I claim as new, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is-
The construction and arrangement of the plate E with wedge-shaped lugs and hasps F H, and correspondingly wedge-shaped recesses G and hasp-aperture D, in the lock proper, as and for the purposes set forth;
JOSEPH STANTON.
