Letters Patent No. 114,209, dated April 25, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLATS FOR WINDOW-SHADES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and makingpaxt oi the lame.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that we, J OHN SHOREY and WILLIAM.
D. BUTLER bOth of the city of Lowell and county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved method of making Balanee-Slats for the Bottom of Window-Shades; and we hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, andexact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing and to the' letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
The nature of our invention consists in loading a wooden slat for a window-shade with lead or composition, so the bulk of the slat will he no larger than if the-required weight was not attached to it.
Figure 1 is a view of slat A with a portion of the wood cut out.
Figure 2 is an edgewise view of slat A.
Figure 3 is view of slat A when completed.
Figure 4 is a sectional view of slat A split edgewise.
Fig. 1 is a view of slat A with the slot it cut through it. The dots shown by the letters 8 s ,s, 8m, are holes in the edges of the slat A, as shown in fig. 2.
'p Fig. 3 is a view of slat A with the slot h-filled flush with lead or com-position to give it the required weight.
a: is a hole cast in the metal for a cord.
Fig. 4.- is a sectional view of slat A split through the center edgewise after the metal has been poured into the slot 72., showing that it has run into the holes s s-s, seen in fig. 2, thus pinning'the metal firmlyto the wood.
The advantage of making slats for window-shades in this way is that it makes the slats no larger than if the required weight was not in them, the metal being flush with the wood and smooth, and are of a uniform weight, making it'a valuableinvention.
We claim asour invention- The slat A, with slot h and holes 8 s s filled with lead or-other composition, the whole arranged and combined as and for the purpose described.
JOHN SHOREY. WILLIAM D. BUTLER.
