SEWING-MACHIN E FOR ATTACHING LABELS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR ROSENTHAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Grand Rapids, county of Kent, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines for Attaching Labels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sewing machines for attaching labels,
and for similar uses such as attaching a reinforce piece or reinforc ngby stitchings- The objects of the invention are, first, to provide an improved presser foot structure, including means for holding and supporting the presser foot and permitting the insertion of a presser foot of different dimention; second, to provide improved means of guiding such a presser foot, the guiding means being adjustable to different sizes of presser feet to attach labels or different dimensions, or to do similar work.
Further objects, and objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
The objects of this invention are accom- .plished by the machine described .in the following specification. -The lnvention ,is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A machine constituting a preferred embodiment' of this invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

In the drawings, similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the I bar 4:, and needle'5 are in the usual formfor sewing machines, and the machine is driven in the way thatis common and well known for power driven sewing machines. The details of these parts, therefore, are not gone into and are not illustrated, as they are of a usual well known form. The presser foot is engaged by a seriesof pins 7, 8, 9 and 10, in suitable sockets 6 on its opposite sides. and ends, the pins being spring pressed so that they can be depressed or withdrawn successively to "permit the presser foot to pass the needle. The

: saidfpresser foot is supported entirely by the spring pressed pins referred to, which engage the sockets 6 on all sides for that The pins 7, 8 and 9 are all supportedin precisely the same manner, and are carried by suitable reciprocating heads 11 supported in slotted ways 12 in the carrier frame 14. These pins are urged into engagement with the presser foot by coiled springs disposed thereon. The heads 11 are'adjustable on the pins by'suitable set screws 1111, see particularly Fig. IV.
The pin is secured adjustably on the yielding arm 15, which is pivoted at 16 on the frame 14, and is held yieldingly in position by the coiled compression spring 17 acting thereagainst. The pin 10 is screw threaded in its support, and when it is,
properly adjusted, it is retained in position by the lock nut 18. -These variousadjustments of the pins permit the adjustment of the device .for holding a presser foot of any required size within the dimensions of the machine, and enable the proper locating of the same. The frame 14 is carried by the pivoted arm 19, being secured to the down-turned end thereof by suitable screws -The arm 19 is secured tothe actuating lever frame 20 by hinged member 21 engaging a .pivot pin 22, the said hinge member being secured to the frame 20 by screws 23,
'or other suitable means (see particularly Figs. III and V). This permits the frame .14 and the presser foot 6 carried thereby to be elevated by swinging upon the said hinge. The arm 19 is held down by spring pressureby means of the coiled spring 24 on the vertical rod 25 secured to the needle end of the frame 20, the tension of the said spring being adjustable by the thumb nut 26. These parts are carried bya base plate 27 which. is secured. to the sewing machine plate 1 by clamp screws 28 in the slots 29 thereof (see Figs. I and II thesame beingv detailed particularly in Fig; II.
e The actuating lever frame 20 is carried upon an adjustable fulcrum or swivel 30 which is clamped in a slot-31 of the base plate-27.- A projection 32. engages in a top groove 33 at each side of the slot and a hexagon nut 34 engages-a bottom groove 35 at each side, whereby this fulcrum or pivot can be very readily adjusted. A slide 36 is pivoted on this fulcrum and is retained in itsplace by the shouldered screw 37 above the same, so that the actuating lever frame 20 plays freely back and forth on this slide. which is located in the ways 38 formed thereon, so that the actuating lever frame 20 has a swivel action on the pivot 30, and at the same time slides freely back and forth on slide 36, permitting its movement to be universal and under complete control.
The actuating lever frame 20 is driven by the ratchet wheel 39 which is carried on a suitable hub projection from the axis of the pinion 39. The pinion 39 is supported on the pointed bearings 40 and 42, the bearing 40 being screw threaded into the base plate and locked in position by the lock nut 41, and the bearii'ig 42 being supported by the supporting arm 43. It is screw threaded therein, and lock nut 44 is provided for lockingthe' same in position. A vertical oil hole 45 is through the entire bearing parts whereby the same can be effectively lubricated.
The ratchet wheel 39 is actuated by the pawl 47 carried on the pin 48 in yoke 46,
which is pivoted on the axis of the pinion and socket joints 5353 at each end to the parts named. The rock shaft arm 51 is carried upon the feed rock shaft 54; Any rock shaft connected to the driving mechanismof the sewing machine will serve the same purpose. By this means it will be noted that whenever the feed shaft is rocked, the ratchet wheel is advanced and the mechanism provided is operated. The right hand end of the actuating lever frame 20 comprises a rack structure which cooperates with a pinion by which this feed device is operated for feeding the labels to the needle. A straight rack 58, with suitable teeth thereon, is disposed toward the back of the frame, and is held in place by screws 59. A straight rack 60 parallel therewith is at the front of the frame, and is retainedin position by set screws 61 which support and control the position thereof. A curved rack 62 is toward the left or the needle end of this frame, and a corresponding curved rack 53 is on the opposite side thereof. These are clamped between the racks 58 and 60, the ends of these racks 62 and 63 being formed with gear teeth that exactly mesh with. the gear teeth of. said racks whereby they are adjustable back and forth and are retained incorrect operative relation. Because these are adjustable on the gear teeth, whenever they are adjusted the pinion which actuates the same meshes with the gears without further fitting or adjusting. vA cam structure is provided for guiding this actuating lever frame to maintain the pinion in mesh with the rack structure, so that the presser foot 6 will be correctly guided and the label fed in proper manner to the sewing machine needle to be stitched. A guide device for engagement .with the cam is provided at the right hand end of the actuating lever frame. This guide device comprises a disk 66 on the lower end of journal pin 67 which "is retained in place by shouldered screw 68.-
A roller 64 to contact with the main cam guide surface to follow the surface thereof is earned upon a journal pin which proj'jects downwardly from the disk 66. To insure proper engagement of the guide roller 64: at all times with the cam, a supplemental guiding cam surface 72 is provided, over which a supplemental guiding roller 70 passes. This roller is borne on a pivot 71 on the disk 66.
The principal or lower cam surface 69 is disposed on the base plate 27 on the edge of which the guide roller 64 travels, as will be seen from an inspection of Figs. IX and X. On top of this main cam 69 is the supplemental guiding cam surface 72, having projections 73 at each corner, which engage the supplemental roller 7 O and cause the disk 66 to turn on its pivot and guide the main roller until it correctly, turns the corner. Owing to the fact that these rollers are both carried upon the same pivot plate, the auxiliary roller 70 becomes disengaged from the said projection, owing to the pivoting thereof, and permits the travel around the same. The cam plates are made integrgl and are secured in place by the attaching screws 69.
The regular presser foot is omitted from this sewing machine, and to the presser bar 7 -l is secured a cam structure for withdrawing the presser foot supporting pins to permit the passing of the presser foot past the needle of the sewing machine. This consists -of a cam carrying plate or frame 75 containing radial slots 78 for the adjustment of the cam blocks 76, which are securedin the slots by set screws 77, as clearly appears from an inspection of Figs. I and V. Se-
' cured to each reciprocating head 11, which carries the supporting pins 7, 8 and 9, are anti-friction rollers 79 carried on pins 80. When this actuating lever frame structure 20 is operated in stitching a label, these cams are acted upon successively by'the rollers and force the. pins 7, 8, 9 and 10 successively out of engagement, .,opening a space for the needle to pass, as each side is successively presented to be stitched, as clearly feeding of the label, as it ca r simply be placed under the presser foot and stitched by the outer edge being thus presented.
The elevating of the presser foot ma be accomplished by any suitable means.- pwardly projecting sleeves 81 are screw threaded at 82 into the base plate 1 of the sewing machine. These are yoked together by the bar 83 which is clamped thereto by the tubular shouldered nuts 84;. A yoke 85 is slotted at 86 at each end and is disposed between these parts and beneath the hinged bar 19. The slots 86 engage under suitable shouldered heads SS on the upper ends of the elevating pins 87. The pins 87 are acted upon by a pair of levers 89, fulcrumed at 9090 on a suitable bracket .91 underneath the machine. (See Fig. XII.) A treadle or foot connection 92 extends to the floor beneath the machine whereby the operator can very readily raise the presser foot 6 for inserting a label.
From this somewhat extended description of the parts, the operation of the devices connected with this improved label attaching machine will be readily understood. The operator, by depressing the footloo control through connection .92, raises the presser foot 6. A label is inserted underneath the same, which can be conveniently done owing to the open side of the presserfoot holder. The label corresponds in size to the presser foot. The presser'foot is thenlet down and the machine started, which very rapidly, step bystep, automatically feeds the entire periphery or'edge of the label to the sewing machine .needle. This is accomplished owing to the fact that the rock shaft 54 every time the needle reciprocates, advances the ratchet wheel 39.

responding amount, carryingthe fulcrumed actuating lever frame around over the cam in confornnty to the cam side, thereby 1nduci ng the correct movement of the presser foot in its relation to the sewing machine needle. As the presser foot is passed around, owing to the cam devices for that purpose, the supporting pins therefor are successively depressed to'permlt the needle to pass without obstruction.
It is very clear that the various parts can be quickly adjusted to accommodate labels of different sizes by substituting proper presser feet, thus making the machine serve for a great variety of work. The invention can-be adapted to any form of label.
The machine is adapted to add reinforcing patches at any desired point whether they are labels or not. Also, the machine will quickly and automatically insert stitching in any design, either as a reinforcement or as a mere ornament. I
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1; In a label attaching machine, the combination with the bed, arm, head, needle bar and driving. means of a sewing machine, of a supporting base plate secured to the bed of said machine; an actuating lever frame structure carried thereby comprising a gear toothed frame part with inwardly pro1ecting gear teeth; a swivel slide on the said supporting plate engaging in suitable ways on the aid actuating lever frame; a. resser foot carrying arm hinged to the sai actuating lever frame; a suitable spring for putting pressure thereon; a presser foot frame carried by said presser foot arm; a,
presser foot with socket depressions on the opposite sides and ends thereof; spring pressed pins engaging said depressions; cam devices to withdraw said pins successively as the presser foot is moved to feed the label to the needle; a ratchet feed device; a pinion driven by said ratchet feed adapted to mesh with the gear toothed frame part of said actuating lever frame; a cam plate on said base plate; anda' cam engaging guide member carried by said actuating lever frame for guiding and controlling the motion of the feed device,all coacting substantially as described and for the purpose speclfied.
2. In a label attaching machine, having a head, a presser foot with socket depressions on the opposite sides and ends thereof; a
presser foot frame to carry said foot; spring pressed pins engaging said depressions; suitable reciprocating heads for carrying said pins, radially disposed in said presser foot frame on three sides of. said foot; a yielding arm with engaging pin for one side of said presser foot; a cam support carried by the head of .said sewing machine, with suitable radial slots therein; cam members adjustable in said slots and disposed to cooperate with and actuate said pin members; friction rollers carried by the said reciprocating heads and yielding arm disposed to coact with the cam members whereby the pins are actuated and Withdrawn successively; and means of actuating the said frame as specified 3. In a label attaching machine, the combination with a sewingmachine, of a; detachable presser foot; laterally yielding 'members for supporting the same; means for guiding said presser foot to the needle of the sewing machine; and actuating means for withdrawing said lateral supports successively to permit all sides of the foot to pass the needle, as specified.
