Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, I-IEINRIGHVPOETTER, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at 126 Grafenbenger Allee, Dusseldorf, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blowing Systems for Furnaces, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings.
This invention relates to a method of and apparatus for the working of furnace installations and more especially of gas generators, by means of which a steam jet air injector is automatically put in operation immediately the fan of the blowing device, from any cause, is thrown out of action. By this means explosions in the air spaces of the generators due to the backward flow of the gas into the air space are prevented, while moreover explosions in the gas pipes themselves due to the fact that, when the blowing device is stationary, v atmospheric .air may be drawn into the pipes through the cooling of the gas are likewise prevented.
The construction of the blowing device is such that when started again, the steam jet injector isiautomatically again put out of action, an arrangement which considerably facilitates the change from one method of working to the other, hitherto by no means free from danger, and entirely does away with .all possibility of danger to the attendants operating the generators and furnaces.
,An arrangement in accordancewith this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figures 1 and 2 illustrate alternative arrangements of apparatus, the various valves beingshown in section.

So long, therefore, as the pressure in these air supply pipes exceeds the maximum gas pressure of the furnace plant, the bell cl will remain in the position shown in the drawing, and consequently the valve a will remain open and the valve b closed. An adjustable weight 70 is provided on the arm (Z by means of which the operation of the bells can be suitably regulated in accordance with the working conditions. When now from any cause whatever, such for instance as the failure of the electro-motor Z due to short-'circuiting, the failure of the coupling m or the like, the pressure beneath the bell (Z falls this bell, on account of the fact that its weight exceeds that of the bell 6, will be forced into its lowest position, with the result that the steam jet injector 2' will immediately become operative through the opening of the valve Z), whereby the flap valve n will be reversed through the lateral air pressure exerted from the direction of the injector, so that the sliding surface at 0 is moved beyond the aperture at 79. To facilitate the rapid action of the flap valve, it is important that the bell should be raised by the blast from the injector into its highest position, before the flap valve n has been rotated beyond its central position, so that the valve 6 may be promptly opened and the full pressure may be exerted on the valve n. From the foregoing descriptionit willbe 7 obvious that apparatus in accordance with this invention may easily be applied to entire groups of generators having a common blowing device and gas collecting flue. What I claim is:

In a furnace installatiomthe combination of a blowing device adapted to be a driven by power with a second blowing de'-' w vice adapted to be'actuated by a 'steamjet, a, valve chamber, a steamfpipe communicating therewith, a lever mounted to oscillate within said-valve chamberand connected to a shaft extendingto the exterior of said' chamber, valves carried by the arms of said lever; one of said valves being adapted when unseatedto supply steam to the blast from the first mentioned blowing device and the other of them when unseated to'supply steam to said jet, seats for said valves within said chamber, a second-lever connected to said shaft externally of said chamber, a counterweight on said second lever, and means adapted to raise said lever and counter- 1 weight when the first mentioned blowing de vice is operative, but to allow said 'lever to descend under the action" of said weight when the said blowing device is inoperative, the first mentioned lever andthe valves care 'riedthereby' being thus simultaneously and correspondingly operated.
