APPLIANCE FOR POLISHING FLOORS OR FLOOR-COVERINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1915..
Application filed August 21, 1913. Serial IiTo. 785,979.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MOUNT, of Bay View, Darling Point Road, Darling Point, Sydney, in the State of New South Wales, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Appliances for Polishing Floors or Floor-Coverings, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention refers to appliances for polishing floor or floor covering. surfaces comprising a rectangular framing reversible within the operating push handle and having opposite faces adapted one for distributing a polishing medium and the other for polishing the surfaces. And the object of this invention is to provide an improved appliance of the type mentioned adapted to contain a supply of plastic polishing medium and to automatically apply and distribute same to the flat surface to be polished. And according to this invention the appliance comp'nises a hollow box frame having contained therein a transverse compartment or receptacle for the polishing medium, open at one end and closed at the opposite end by a transverse distributing roller disposed for floor contact and rotatable in one direction. One horizontal face of the frame consists of a hinged lid cover ing the open end of said transverse receptacle and having its outer surface padded for polishing purposes while the said roller protrudes through the opposite horizontal face of the frame on which latter face is disposed transverse brushes for floor con-' tact positioned ahead. and rearwardly of said roller. The said brushes operate to hold the said roller free of floor contact and consequent rotation until sufficient downward pressure is applied to the frame by the operatin push handle, and further to evenly sprea the polishing medium applied to the surface to be polished, by the said roller. To feed the plastic medium a loose roller is provided in the container bearin on the peripheral surface of the distributing roller.
In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part thereof, the preferable form of my invention is illustrated in which Figure 1 is a pers ective view of the appliance with the istributing surface in floor contact. Fig. 2 is a reverse view to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the appliance with the hinged polishing surface raised to show the interior. tical sectional elevation. The horizontal .lid 7 'of the hollow rectangular frame 8 constitutes the polishing surace of the appliance having transversely 16 of which has bearing in the sides of the frame 8. The distributing roller 15 protrudes through the frame 8 (see Fig. 4) and fits into the delivery end of the transverse receptacle 17 for the plastic polishing medium being aflixed within the frame 8. For feeding the plastic polishing medium a loose transverse roller 18 is placed in said re-;
ceptacle 17 to bear upon the peripheral surface of the'roller 15. The ends 19 of the receptacle 17 are curved inwardly and concentric, to the loose roller 18 so that the latter Fig. 4 is a verwill press the whole of the plastic medium 1 contained in the receptacle 17, into contact with the roller 15. When the plastic material has for any reason become comparatively firm, the loose roller' 18 employed is preferably of iron so as to exert greater pressure on the polishing medium but usually a wooden roller will be found effective, and for convenience the compartment 20 is formed in the frame 8 to contain the spare roller (see Fig. 4).
In order that the quantity of the polishing medium applied by the distributing roller 15 to the surface to be polished may not be excessive it is contrived that said roller may only rotate during one operative stroke of the frame 8, and this is effected by a circular ratchet plate 21 provided on the spindle 16 of said roller 15, in which plate 21 engages a spring held pawl 22 affixed to the interior of said frame 8 (see Fig. 4). I
To reciprocate the appliance when in floor contact a push handle 23 is provided attached to the U-shaped frame 24 the ends of which are pivotally attached to the sides of the box frame 8. In order to prevent forward end of the frame 8.
In use, the receptacle 17 being charged with polishing medium, to apply same to the surfaces to bepolished, downward pres- 1.
sure is imparted to the frame ,8 by the handle 23 suflicient to overcome the tension of the fibers of the brushes 14 and bring the distributing .roller 15 into floor contact when movement of the appliance in one direction will cause rotation of the roller 15, reciprocation of the appliance causing the'brushes 14 to distribute the olishing medium evenly. When the polis ing medium has been thus distributed the frameS is then reversed within the U-shaped frame 24 to bring the polishing strips 9 on the lid 7 into floor contact (see Fig.2) when the polishing operation is carried out by again reciprocating the appliance.
It is to be understood that I do notjconfine myself to the use of the polishing stri s 9 on the 'lid 7 as the latter may be entire y covered with one piece of-paddmg, and also it will'be found that by the use of'the brushes 14 that the polishing medium will 'have been polished to a considerable extent the padding on the lid 7 being only "provided for puttingafinish onthe polish.
\ WhatI claimand desire to secure by Letters Patent is a rectangular box frame reversible within a U-shaped frame jpivotally attached thereto and having a push handle, a lid jon one horizontal side ofsaid' box frame, a'transverse "receptacle contained Within said box fraine andopen at one end and close'd at the other.
by transverse distributing roller rotatable I by" fliio'r contact roller having acircular ed to its spindle, a spring 'fheld pawl engagmgwith'saidplate and at- "tached to-"samba; fram'e,=an'd brushes dispisse on saidframe ahead and'rearwardly ,ofs'a'id roller as'herein'setforth."
ratchet plate a polishing appliance for floors. and
Indoor covermgs, consisting of a hollow box frame, a U-shaped frame having its ends pivotally attached to said box frame, a hanidle attached to said vU-shased frame, a lid -.c1osing one horizontal si e of said box frame, a transverse receptacle contained within said box frame and open at one end and closed at the'other by a, transverse distributin roller rotatable by floor contact, said ro er havin a circular ratchet plate 'aflixed to itsspin lo, a spring held pawl en- 'fgaging with said plate and attached to said box-frame, brushes disposed on said frame ahead and rearwardly of said roller, anda looseroller contained within said receptacle. ;3. A polishing appliance for floors and floor coverings coinprisin a casing, means for depositing and sprea ng as plastic polishing medium on the floor formed on one side of said casing, means for polishing said floor secured to the oppositely disposed side of said casing, a frame, and 1ts complemental handle provided, said casing revolubly mounted-in said frame, substantially as de- I scribed. A y I I 4. polishing appliance for floors and floor coverings comprising a substantially 'rectan ar hollow casing a one-way roller revolu 1y mounted in said casing and pro-- jecting beyond the side thereof, spreaders secured to said casing adjacent said roller andserving to normally space said roller 30 lfrom 1 the floor to-r'eceive the polishing me- -dium, means for polishing said floor secured the ,0 positely disposed Side of Said cw mg, a. rame including its complemental handle .provided, said. casing 'revolubly mounted in said frame, substantially as .described. ;.In witness whereof Iha've hereunto afiixed 'my'signature the 24th dayof July 1913.
