DUST-PAN.
Application filed April 11, 1913.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, IIERMAN ZUBER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Murphysboro, Jackson county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Pans, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in dust pans, and the object of my invention is to construct a dust pan having a cover comprising two independently hinged sections, whereby a long sweeping surface may be had over the major portion of the pan, so that the bulk of the dust or dirt will not be drawn out of the pan, and to provide means whereby the entire pan may be wholly covered to prevent the dust and dirt from being blown or otherwise dislodged from the pan.
lVith the above purposes in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claim and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan of a dust pan con structed according to my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the pan; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional elevation taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation on a reduced scale showing the position of the cover when discharging the contents of the pan.
Referring by numerals t0 the accompanying drawing: 5 designates the body portion or dust pan proper in which the bottom, sides and the back are preferably constructed from a single piece of sheet metal.
As shown, I prefer to construct the dust pan proper with forwardly converging side walls and a rear wall curved and inclining forwardly and downwardly. The forward margin of the bottom of the pan 5 is provided with a crimp 6 in order to stiffen the forward margin and to produce an increased wearing surface for the extreme margin. At the upper edges of the two sides and the back of the pan proper there is a wire reinforce 7. Secured to the back of the dust pan proper is a tubular handle 8 which preferably inclines rearwardly and upwardly, and the length of which is governed by the different uses to which the pan is to be put.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1%15. Serial No. 760,548.
9 designates the sweeping tray or partial cover for the dust pan, which is arranged to overlie the upper margins of the dust pan proper and is provided with side walls 10 extending the full length of the margins of the dust pan.
It is to be observed that the body of the sweeping tray extends only a portion of the length of the dust pan, so that dust and the like may be moved over its upper surface and deposited in the pan beneath the sweep ing tray, where it will be out of reach of the broom or brush and not be drawn out of the pan in the one motion of the brush. Secured to the bottom of the two side walls 10 of the sweeping tray are the reinforcing wires 11 which serve the functions of stifiening the tray, of providing a pivotal connection with the pan proper and in providing a handle which is designated by the numeral 12 for the manipulation or moving of the sweeping tray.
13 designates metal straps which are secured to the dust pan proper and embrace the wire 11 freely, so that the wire may ro tate in the straps. At the forward end of the sweeping tray the metal is turned backwardly to form a lip 14 which is shaped to conform with the forward margin 6 of the dust pan proper. In this connection I wish to state that it is preferable to shape the lip 14 so that there will be a considerable friction between said lip and the forward margin 6 of the dust pan, in order to cause the dust pan proper at its forward margin to cling to the sweeping tray when the entire dust pan is inclined to a position with the forward edge of the sweeping tray constituting the support for the entire dust pan, thereby preventing opening of the dust pan. As a means additional to the interengagement of the lip 14; and margin 6 for holding the tray in a closed position over the dust pan, I provide a sleeve 15 in the handle 8 of the dust pan and seat therein an extensile coil spring 16 which is arranged to bear upwardly upon the handle 12 of the sweeping tray.
designates a lid carrying straps 18 which embrace the reinforcing wire 11 so that it will be hingedly connected with the dust pan proper. The lid 17 is arranged to fit between the walls 10 of the sweeping tray and extend from the rear top margin of the dust pan to and beyond the rear margin of the open and the said lid 17 forms with the sweeping for the dust pan.
19 designates a handle connected with the lid 17 and is shaped at its outer central portion to conform with the handle 8 of the dust pan so that, when the lid 17 is elevated, said central portion of the handle 19 will partially embrace, and, by frictional engagement with the handle 8, hold the lid 17 in an open position, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
In operation, to collect dust and the like in the dust pan, the lid 17 is elevated and held in an open position, and the dust is swept upwardly over the sweeping tray to top of the dust pan, where it will fall beneath the sweeping tray and hence not be dragged backwardly by a rearward motion of the broom or brush. After the sweeping has been accomplished the lid 17 is dropped, thereby preventing any loss of the contents of the dust pan, either by the dust or dirt spilling therefrom or by being blown.
It is obvious that a dust pan of my im- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. 0.
proved construction may be put to a number of different uses, such as for household purposes in floor sweeping, or as a crumb tray for table use, and for street sweeping purposes and the like in which latter case the handle would, for convenience, be made somewhat longer and the handles for the lid and sweeping tray would be made so that they could be readily reached from the outer.
end of the handle proper.
I claim:
In combination with a dust pan having a reinforced forward margin, a hinged sweeping tray therefor, having its forward margin extended beyond the forward margin of the pan and doubled back to meet the margin of the pan and having in said doubled back portion a seat to frictionally engage the reinforced margin of the pan.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in presenceof two subscribing witnesses.
