1 ,141 ,009, Specification of Letters Patent. No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that I, CHAPMAN SGHANAN- poAH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Explosives, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to explosives and more particularly to powders, one object of the invention being to provide an explosive which .will be cheap to manufacture, which Wlll have no corroding eifect, and which will have a high degree of explosive force.
A further object of the invention is to provlde an explosive which will not require expensive apparatus in its manufacture, but
which tools.
Another object of the invention is to provide an explosive which consists of' a plurahty of components, these components in themselves being non-explosive but when mixed with each other and combined form a powerful explosive.
With the above objects in view one component comprises the following ingredients namely granulated sugar, alum, liquid coffee and wood alcohol mingled and compounded as hereinafter described and the other component comprises a single ingredi ent namely potassium chlorate.
The first mentioned component is compounded as follows: Take one part of granulated sugar and add to the same one-sixteenth part of alum, then add to this mixture a small quantity of liquid coffee, enough to moisten the sugar and alum. Add a small portion of wood alcohol and thoroughly mix may be made without any special the same with the first mentioned ingredicuts and then boil the entire mass until all moisture is evaporated so that a solid re- Application filed April 18, 1914. Serial No. 832,800.
mains. Thecomponent just described and conslstmg of the ingredients brought together in the manner indicated is non-explosive and non-corrosive to metal. It may be safely and readily transported to any desired point.
The second component of the explosive includes a single ingredient namely potassium chlorate. This component is also nonexplosive andnon-corrosive to metal and,
may be safely transported frompoint to point. When the two components are brought together andmixed a powerful explosive is produced. In mixing the two components seven-eighths of a part of the first described component is mixed with one part of the second described component.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a powerful explosive may be provided by brlnging the components together and that the components may be transported safely and without danger of premature explosion prior to components.
What is claimed is The method of forming an explosive consisting in adding to one part of sugar, onesixteenth part of alum, then adding liquid cofi'ee enough to moisten the sugar and alum, then adding a quantity of wood alcohol then boiling the mass-until all moisture is evaporated and a solid remains which may be rendered explosive at will by the addition of potassium chlorate in proportions substantially as settforth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
