  • This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in lifting jacks, and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character which will be constructed in such manner that the lifting lever may be readily locked in adjusted position longitudinally of the standard in such manner that the locking means will serve as a pivot for the lifting lever and prevent the lifting lever from moving longitudinally upon the standard while being applied to lift the device with which it is engaged.

To all whom it may, concern Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN S. LEH- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawn, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting- Jacks; of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in lifting jacks, and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character which will be constructed in such manner that the lifting lever may be readily locked in adjusted position longitudinally of the standard in such manner that the locking means will serve as a pivot for the lifting lever and prevent the lifting lever from moving longitudinally upon the standard while being applied to lift the device with which it is engaged.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lifting device which will be constructed in such manner that the lifting lever may be adjusted longitudinally of the standard and secured in adjusted position in such manner that movement of the lifting lever in one direction will serve to clamp the same upon the standard and make it impossible for the weight upon the forward end of the lever to force the latter downwardly.
This invention has for a further object to generally improve and simplify the construction and operation of the various parts of a device of this character and increase the efficiency thereof without materially increasing the cost of the same.
With these and other objects in view as will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view on the plane of line 5-5 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.

The divided standard 2 has a plurality of notches 4 formed in its rear edge and arranged longitudinally of the same for engagement by the central portion of the U shaped lifting lever support 5 mounted in a suitable bracket 6 secured to the lower face of the lifting lever 7 which projects through the divided standard 2. The free ends of the forwardly directed arms of the U shaped lever support are bent upon themselves, as shown at 6, for engagement with the flat face of the standard 2 and are then looped to form the eyes 9 within which are engaged the forward free ends of the spring member 10 which has its central portion twisted to form the eye 11 engaged with the head of the screw 12 or other suitable member secured to the upper face of the lifting lever 7 rearwardly of the standard 2, whereby upon pivotal movement of the lifting lever 7 to force the rear end downwardly and the forward end upwardly, the forward ends of the lever support 5 will be drawn upwardly and forwardly, thereby retaining the central portion of said member 5 in the proper notch 4. and forcing the bent ends 8 of said member 5 against the forward face of the standard 2, making it impossible for the member 5 to be disengaged from the notch 4 to permit downward movement of the lifting lever 7 upon the standard 2.
After the forward or working end 13 of the lifting lever 7 has been engaged with the wagon or other device which it is desired to lift or raise from the ground and the lever operated as above stated, said lifting lever 7 will automatically lock in operated position to retain the object in raised position and absolutely prevent movement of the lever 7 in either direction, by means of the locking bar 14: which has its upper end secured in the eye 15 depending from the rear end of said lever 7, while the main portion of said locking bar 1 1 is provided in its lower face with a series of forwardly and upwardly directed notches 16 to receive the main portion of the locking rod 17 extending transversely of the lower portion of the standard 2 and having its opposite ends 18 clamped around the lower portions of the parallel members forming the dividedstand ard 2 to clamp said lockingerodv7in, proper position, and it will'be evident that during the pivotal movement of the lifting lever, 7
