Description

P. ROHDIN 81 C. OSTERGREN.
Improvement in Heating-Stoves. No. 134,046. Patented April 25,1371.

Letters Patent No. 114,046, dated April 25, 1871.
lM PR OVEM ENT IN HEATlNG-STOVES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and maldng part. of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, Pn'rnn Rorrnm and CHARLES OSTERGREN, both of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in HeatingStoves; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front view, and
Figure 2 is a vertical section.
Similar letters of reference in the drawing indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of a cylindrical fire-box, contracted at its upper end, eccentrically within an upright drum or jacket, which is open at both ends, as hereinafter described, for the purpose of more thoroughly heating the air that comes in contact with the stove.
In the drawing- A is the fire-pot or heater, in the form of an upright cylinder, constructed at its upper end to receive the smoke-pipe B, and its lower end resting upon legs or supports 0 C. i
D is the drum or hot-air jacket, surrounding and supporting the fire-pot, the legs of the latter resting gpon the annular bottom of the former, as shown in The fire-pot may be constructed of any suitable material and properly lined to resist the action of the heat. It is provided with an opening, E, for the introduction of fuel, and at the bottom another, F, for the removal of ashes from the ash-box G.
The front wall of the heater and smoke-pipe is vertical, and almost in contact with the drum. The rear wall of the heater does not approach the drum so closely as the front wall, and is vertical only from the bottom to the point a, bending inward from that point to its upper end, where it receives the pipe B. A passage is thus left around the heater, between it and the jacket, for the free upward movement of the heated air current, which, being held in contact with the surface of the stove, is thoroughly warmed as it passes up'through the drum.
The air discharged at the upper end of the drum is diffused thoroughly throughout the apartment. The lower end of the heater is prevented from burning the floor by reason of its being so far elevated from it.
The door of the fire-pot, when open, ventilates the apartment, removing, to a great degree, all the bad air therein. v
Any kind of fuel, wood, hard or soft coal, coke, 8m,
can he used in this form of stove.
Having thus described our invention,
What we claim as newtherein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The cylindrical fire-box A, contracted at its upper end and provided with the openings E F, when arranged ecceutrically within the drum D, open at both ends, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
' PETER ROI-IDIN.
CHARLES OSTERGREN.
