ARTUR TALK E, OF NIEDER-GOELLSCHAU, KREIS GOLDBERG-HAYNAU, SILESIA, GERMANY.
TOY 0R JOKE ARTICLE.
Application filed May 25, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTUR TALKE, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Nieder- Goellschau, Kreis Goldberg-Haynau, Silesia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy or Joke Articles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a toy or joke article having an extensible plate with painted or printed figures or face on it and with means attached to the plate and distorting the figured part.
The device consistsof certain mechanical combinations which are completely set forth in the following description and in the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the drawing, Figure 1 being a front view, Fig. 2 a vertical section of the device and Fig. 3, a side elevation of a modification of the invention.
The article is made in a simple and handy form, so that it may be carried for instance in the pocket, as it takes up the very least possible room, and at the same time it will conduce to its strength. A casing A like the lower part of a tin-box may, as in this example, suitably be employed. A mirror B can be attached to the solid bottom or made to take the place of the latter. In Fig. 2, for instance, such a mirror rests on the cardboard foundation C and on the ledge-pieces D. The other open side of the casing A is covered by an ordinary plate E consisting of some extensible material such as rubber. On this a face with any sort of expression (Fig. l) is produced in one of the well known waysby printing, painting, etc. The diameter of this plate is made somewhat larger than that of the casing A, beyond which, when evenly placed, it extends. As a special consequence of the boxlike shape of the casing A, the attachment of the plate may be very advantageously effected by a suitably dimensioned frame or ring F fitted over in box-lid style, so that it tightly clasps the previously projecting plate rim surface. In this way, the plate can be quickly and conveniently changed and the insertion of plates with any other figures or face becomes very easy, since troublesome means of attachment such as adhesives, screws, etc., are avoided. The edge Gr of the plate holder Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1915.
Serial No. 840,872.
A is rounded, so that, when the clasping ring F is slipped on, the plate can glide over the rounded part and stretch, whereby it is lprought into a uniformly extended condi- In the hollow space between the extensible plate E and the back of its holder A rests the rod or lever H, which serves to alter the face that in the example given is, by the aid of a spring, set parallel with the longitudinal direction of the plate. This rod or lever H is guided by the edge wall of the holder A at H, bent out at right angles or formed in a nose-like manner at the inner end I, while at the other end it has the form of a handle K. Owing to the proper construction of the point of etrance H, the rod H is free to turn, can be moved in the axial direction, and, working in double-lever manner as it does, it can be made to point in any direction, so that any desired positions may be given to it for the purpose of producing alterations of all kinds to the figure or face by turning the handle K. When the handle is released, the lever or the rod H is pushed into the casing by the action of the spring and kept in this position, so that only its handle remains outside and can be easily taken hold of. This handle can also be used as an eye for the purpose of attaching the article by means of a little chain or string. It is also clear that when the back of the plate-holder A is not provided with a mirror, a springless lever X, for instance, with straight nose-end, like that shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, may, if desired, be used, and this latter may have its piercing or bearing point it in the middle of the back wall. If it is not desired that the nose-end be kept in the guide position, it may be fastened with string and when not in use, it can, for
instance, be hung on to or stuck into the casing.
If the face is to be altered, the rod H is in every case to be brought into the doublelever position, (either from the back or as shown by the dotting in Fig. 2), the point of piercing H in the plate-holder A thereby forming its point of support. In this the lever is directly moved by hand and guided with its nose-like end I against the extensible plate E, whereby the otherwise even surface of the face is stretched and a nose-shaped (dotted) bulge L is produced in place of the 7 original simple coloring. In consequence of the mobility of the rod, the bulged out nose L can be very quickly moved in all direc tions, and the bulge meanwhile made more or less pronounced or distorted by turning the lever, so that by these operations the most manifold and funniest changes in the form and appearance of the figure on the plate can be produced.
Having thus fully set forth the nature of my invention, I claim as follows 1. A toy comprising a casing having an open front and an aperture in its lower part, an elastic cover over said front opening and a rod, extending through said aperture and adapted to be pressed by hand, against elastic cover.
2. A toy comprising a casing having an open front and an aperture through its lower part, an elastic cover secured to said casing and extending over said front opening, a rod having a blunted end and extending upwardly through said aperture, a spring to hold said rod normally in said aperture and tures in its rear side and bottom, an elastic cover over said front opening, a ringholding said elastic cover on the casing, a rod having a vertical and a rocking movement in the bottom slot and turnable to all sides on its fulcrum, and extending horizontally and upmirror in the rear side of said casing and v 7 any preferred representation on the outer surface "ofsaid elastic cover.
4. A'toy comprising a casing having a front opening and an opening rearward of its front opening, an elastic cover over said front opemng and a rod extending through said rearward opening whose nner end is adapted tobe pressed against said elastic cover, for the purpose specified.
In testimony WhGI'BOfI afiix my signature Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
