Specification of Letters latent.
ApplicatiQIl filed May 25, 1914. Serial No. 840,943.
To all whom it may concern Be it known thatwe, SIDNEY HOLTZQLAW and DAVID 'H.- Gannn'rr citizens of, the United. States, residing, respectively, "at
Kansas City, in the county of Wyandotte,
State of Kansas, and Kansas City, county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have in vented certain [new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pocket cigarette cases and our object is to provide a device of this character having a cigarette ejectment opening, means for automatically disposing the cigarettes in the box successively opposite said opening, and means whereby the cigarette opposite said opening maybe prO ected partway through said opening so that 't may be conveniently withdrawn without the necessity of opening the case.
A further object is to produce a case of this character of simple, strong, durable, compact and cheap construction.
To these ends the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and organization as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be'fully understood, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of a cigarette case embodying our invention. Fig. 2
is a horizontal section on the line IIII of Fig. 3. Fig.- 3, is a central vertical section of the case. Fig. 4, is a section taken on the line IV-IV of Fig. 1;. .Fig. 5, is a section taken on the line V-V of Fig. 1. Fig. 6', is a fragmentary perspective view of a modified construction of the bottom ofthe box and of the cigarette presser plate.
In the said drawing, 1 is a shallow box, made preferably of sheet metal and for a short distance from its rear, end its side walls are of increased height as at 2 and are:
connected by a top piece 3, and one sidewall is provided at the front end of part 2 thereof with a cigarette ejectment opening 4, and the top 3 is provided near the opposite side of thecase from opening 4 with "a longitudinal slot 3, occupying the same vertical plane as saidopening 4 for a purpose 7 whichhereinafter appears.
. The caseis made complete by the use of ashallow flanged lid 6 which rests uponvthe forward portion of the box and in conjunction therewith equals the depth of the rear portion of the box, so that the case as a Patented May 18, 1915.
whole shall be a shallow, smooth case and the corners will preferably be rounded so that it can be carried in a pocket without in ury to the latter. The lid is hinged at 7 to the front edge of the top piece 3 of the case and a spring 8 of a type common in cigarette boxes and match boxes,- is adaptedfor automatically opening the lid when the thumb piece catch 9 is operated. This tumb piece catch is of common and well known construction, and isnot detailed as it forms no part of applicants invention, and
the same is true with regard to the detailed attachment of the spring 8, as applicants make no claim'to such feature.
10 is a vertical partition which extends parallel with the rear Wall of the case'tangentially of the opening 4 and forms a stop to position each cigarette opposite the eject ment opening, this partition dividing the case into a narrow rear compartment 11 and they main 'or cigarette holding compartment 12. v
To hold cigarettes, hereinafter identified by a reference character, down upon the bottom of the case so that they shall not fall out of the latter through careless handling of the case when the lid is open and also to prevent any chance of the line of cigarettes I buckling under the pressure imp zed here on by the presser plate, hereinafter identified, when the lid is open, there is provided a guard in the form of a strip 13, which terminates at its rear end in a fork 14, the tines of which are bent to form eyes 15 fitting around the hinge rod or pintle 16. At I (provided with, a
in compartment 11 and provided at one end with a trunnion 20 journaled in the adjacent side wall of the case. At its other. end. the drum or cylinder-is journaledm?- apin: .21 rigidly secured to the othefi'slde wall of p nte n the case, and arranged within the drum and secured at one end thereto and at the other end to fixed pin 21 is a torslon -case," and said presser is connected spring 22, the tendency plate u 31 to abut against one end of the cigarette of the spring to rotate the drum in the direction indicate by'the arrow, r'ig. 3. For eifect' matic feed of the cigarettes tower tition 10, presser 23' preferably oval section, is arranged in the case between the line of the pary a tape 24 orits equivalent to the drum, the tape underlxijgg the line of cigarettes and extending through an opening 25 in the-lower of the partition. It will thus be seen it tensions the spring 22 so that the latter will exert a constant pull on the presser and thus effect the feed of the line of ciga rettes toward the partition eachtime a cigarette is-withdrawn through the ejectment openin I A To e ect the projection of a cigarette from the case and pulled out of the case, a feed mechanism is provided, constructed as follows: 26 is a plate occupying the vertical plan'e'of slot 5 and extending longitudinally thereof and normally closing the same and fitting against the underside of the top piece 3 so as not to interfere with the positioning of a cigarette vertically below it, is provided with a rearwardly projecting arm 27 which projects through a shallow longitudinal recess 2-8 in the upper edge of partition 10 and is connected spring 29 to a fixed lug 30, projecting from the partition 10. At the opposite'end of 26 from arm 27 is a depending finger bearing against the partition 10, and secured to plate 26 and extending downward through slot 5 is the shank 33 of a. flat finger piece 32 upon which the operator will place his finger or thumb for the purpose of sliding said finger piece along the slot and thus, through the pressure of the finger 31 forcing the cigarette in its path from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 1, after which it may .be grasped'and withdrawn from the'case'.
In Fig. 6 the bottom of the case is provided with a channel 34 wherein fits slidingly' onehorizo'ntal arm 36 of a presser 35, corresponding in'function topresser 23, and said presser will be drawn rearwardly to effect the feed of the cigarettes by connecting arm 36 with the spring actuate'd'drum through the medium of'a' flexible cord 37, the cord corresponding in functionto the tape 24;, l
From the above description it will be ap-.' parent that We have produced a cigarette case embodying the features of advantage mauto-' in cross 1. A shallow case, cigarettes and the front wall of the -.engaging and moving case one or so that the cigarette may be grasped and said plate" by a retractile' its form, proportion, detailed construction from i and arrangement, without dcpartin the principle of construction involve or the .spirit and scope of the appended claims.
e cla1mz- I rovided with an openhereof, ahinged lid for actuated presser for sidewise within the more cigarettes until the cigaretteor cigarettes are successively alined with said-opening, and a guard interposed between the lid and the cigarette or'cigw. rettes whereby to retain the same in position in the case when the lid is open.
7 2. A shallow cigarette case comprising *a ing in one side wall t the case, a yieldin'gly bOdYrlllldlflld, the former being provided with Ian ejectment opening in one side. a partition within and extending parallel with cigarettes in the body of the'ca'se and ad jacent'the rear margin of said opening, a presser in the body parallelingsaid parti tion, yielding means for causing said presser to press one cigarette or .aline of cigarettes laterally until. arrested'by-said partition, and a guard overlyin the cigarette or cigarettes in and carried y said body to retain the cigarettes in position when the lid is I.
A shallow cigarette case comprising'a body and a lid, the former being provided with an ejectment opening in one side, a partition within and extending parallel with cigarettes in the body of the case and ad jacent the rear margin ofsaid opening, a presser in the case paralleling said partition, yielding means for causing said presser to-press one cigaretteor laterally until arrested by said partition, and a guard overlying the cigarette or cigarettes in and carried by said body to retain the cigarettes in position when the lidis a line of cigarettes and detachably engaging it' at compartments and located tangentially of Y the rear margin of said opening and pro- -V1Cle(l wlth an opening adjacent the bottom' of the body, a spring actuated drum in the compartment partition'from said opening, a presser arranged in the other compartment and extending parallel with said partition, and a flexible connection extending through the opening of the partition and ,along the bottom of the case between the drum and the presserfor causing the latter sald partition.
. 5.A shallow cigarette case provided in one side wall with a cigarette ejectment open1ng,- a partition dividing the case into two compartments and located tangentially to press one I or more clgarettes sidewise until arrested by of the rear margin of said opening, a spring actuated drum in the compartment located back of sa d partition, a presser arranged in the other compartment and extending partition, and means for applying endwise pressure on the cigarette in contact with said partition to project said cigarette through the said opening.
6. A shallow casing comprising a body of increased depth at its rear end and provided at such end with a fixed top having a transverse slot and also provided at such end with an opening in one of its side Walls, a transverse partition in the rear end of the case in a vertical plane rearward of said opening, a guard paralleling the bottom of the case and hinged at its rear end to the front.
