To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, 'WILUAM J, Rename,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Threading Attachments for Shuttles; and l. do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in loom shuttles and more particularly to threading attachments therefor.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a threading device which will be exceedingly simple in construction and efiicient in operation and by the use of which a shuttle may be threaded without the necessity of employing any instrument Whatever for the purpose of forcing the thread through the guide eyes.
A secondary object is to construct the thread guide in such a manner as to enable it to be readily formed from single piece of Wire.
lVith the above objects in view the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and combination herein dedescribed and claimed and shown in the drawings wherein: p

In the accompanying drawings, 1 have shown a shuttle S including the usual bobbin B which is located in a longitudinal recess R as usual.
For the reception of the threading device constituting this invention, oneend of the upper side of the shuttle is recessed as at r, said recess gradually increasing in depth from its outer end and terminating in an upright transverse wall W upon the upper Specification of Letters Patent.

The side of the shuttle in which the opening 0 is located is preferably channeled out as shown at C to provide for the housing of parts of the threading device and prevent their engagement with the operating parts of the machine when the shuttle is in use.
Located Within the recess 1" is my improved threading device 1 which is here shown in the form of a single piece of wire bent substantially upon itself to form an elongated loop-shaped guiding finger 2, lying longitudinally within the recess 1- with its closed end inclined upwardly and its terminal deflected to facilitate the insertion of the thread thereunder. One arm of this loopshaped guide finger is shorter than the other and its terminal is bent downwardly substantially at right angles as shown at 3 and is embedded within the bottom of the shuttle adjacent the outer :iace of the wall V while the longer arm of said loop is curved outward and said curved portion is passed through and obliquely across the opening 0 and has its terminal bent inwardly and embedded within the side of the shuttle. The shorter arm of the loop which lies wholly within the recess 1' is bent downward adjacent the bent terminal thereof, as shown at e for the purpose oil forming a guide for the thread and causing it toenter a guide eye 5 which is located within the recess r in alinement with the space or eye formed between the bent terminal 3 and the downward bend L of the short arm of the threading device guide 1. A second guide eye 6 is located within the opening 0 in the side wall of the shuttle beneath the outwardly curved portion of the long arm of the guide 1 and in a plane below the plane of the eye 5.
The guide eyes 5 and 6 may be of any suitable formation being open at their front ends, but are preferably constructed of single pieces of wire bent substantially upon themselves and having their free ends twisted to provide attaching shanks, while their folded portions are bent so as to form said eyes which, by this formation, are
open on their under sides at tire front thereon llllti \Vith the parts as above described, the op eration of the device is as follows: The thread T from the bobbin B is passed beneath the finger 2 and pulled rearwardly. This operation will cause the thread to travel downwardly and outwardly upon the downwardly and outwardly curved portion of said finger and willposition it as shown in Fig. 3 (looped around said downwardly and outwardly curved portion). In order to completely pull the end of the thread through the opening 0, it is simply necessary for the operator to wipe one of his fingers rearwardly over the portion of the wire which spans said opening, which action will pull the thread to such an extent as to form a loop L (see Fig. 5), which loop may then be grasped to pull the thread and thereby cause it to enter the eye 6 at the side of the shuttle. During this threading operation, the downwardly curved portion a of the guiding finger has directed the thread into the innermost guide eye 5 and a further pull on the thread causes it to pass under the outwardly bowed portion 4 of the guide 1 and be directed thereby into the outer guide eye 6 and the threading operation will be complete. Thus it will be seen that I have formed an extremely simple and eflicient threading device which may be applied to shuttles of various forms and which will readily and successfully perform the function for which it isdesigned.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation,
