I Application led November 10, 1914. Serial No; 871,391.
To all whom t may concern:
. Be it known that I, GEORGE J. KELLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have. invented a new and useful Improvement in Knives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates tocertainnew and useful improvements in knives and relates more particularly to improvements in the means for attaching the usual finishing sides or side plates to a knife.
The primary object of the invention isA to provide means for attaching thesides of a knife thereto without the use of solder. As heretofore practised solder has been used in securing the sides of pocket knives thereto, but this is objectionable, owing to the fact that after soldering refinishing is neces sary, involving cleansing with acid solutions and consequent rusting of the steel portions of the knife. Y n
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pocket knife constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the sides. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken .on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing a modified form of the invention. y
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention the plates 1 which are to be attached to the knife Vand are to form the finished sides of the latter, are constructed with or drawn up to have a continuous flange 2 which follows the Vcontour 0f the plate 1, both along the sidesand ends of the latter and forms a permanent open main pocket. The flange 2 at one end of the side plate l is extended to form a lip 3, which with the adjacent parts of the plate and flange forms a pocket. The flanges 2 do not grip the sides of the knife body nor one of the ends of the latter, as shown in Figs. 4 and 2, but merely extend over the side plates 4 of the knife body so as to cover the knife body sides, but the gripping lingers, as shown in Figs. 2, 4 and 5, positively grip the ends of the side plates of the knife body, so as to hold the side plates 1 Vthereon against movement with relation to the knife body.
The pockets that the lips 3 form are auxiliary or supplemental to the main pockets p aforementioned.
The opposite ends of the side plates 1 Vdo not possess lips 3, k(Figs. 2, y3 ,and 5) but are formed adjacent vtheir said opposite ends with apertures 5 which register with similar apertures 6 formed through `the side plates of theknife body and thev latter, so that a rivet 7 may be passed through.' the afore-` mentioned registering apertures andheaded as shown in Fig. 2, to thus firmly connect Vthe plates 1 to the knife body. The rivet serves to hold the side plates 1 against movement and thus prevents movement of the lips 3, so that the side rplates 1 are effectively secured against movement in all directions, due to the flange 2 which is of continuous character.
In Fi cation o the invention is shown inwhich in lieu of the rivet 7 a bail 8 is employed, the ends of the bail passing into or through the registering apertures 5 and 6. The bail can be used to attach to a chain or the'like, or to a key ring. By providing the plates 1 at one of their ends with auxiliary pockets it is obvious that to attach the same to the usual side plates 4 it is only necessary to slip one of the ends of the latter plates .intoA the pocket, after which the plates 1 rest flush against the plates 4. i
`It will be apparent from the above that 5 of the drawings, a Slight modiesolder is entirely dispensed with by use of Y the present invention, and that a simpler, l
less expensive, and time saving method is provided for securing the side plates to a knife.
In addition the flanges of die Side plaies 1 cover in part the sides and ends of the ters Patent In a knife having dat Straight Side plaies,
a pair of finishing side plates each having a permanent open main pocket formed by a continuous bounding wall, said wall having an inward extension atone end which forms an auxillary pocket whereby the knife side ,Y
plates at their adjacent ends canrbe initially plaeed in the auxiliary pockets and then be moved into the main pockets whereby the Walls of the main pockets completely cover the side edges of the knife side plates and ii. are connected to the latter Without bending of the finishing plates or any part thereof, and means passed through registering apertures provided therefor in the finishing plates and knife at their opposite ends to seeure the opposite ends of the iinishing plates EO to the knife.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name toy this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
GEORGE J. KELLEY.
